Chakwera to meet former presidents
Analysts have warned the country's leadership to stop politicking on top of hundreds of dead bodies at a time when solutions are needed urgently to assist Malawians. Analysts said leaders should desist from grandstanding and provide solutions to help Malawi at this time.
"Chakwera will probable use this period to garner support in the South and Eastern regions while opposition leader Peter Mutharika may complicate issues by not attending," opined one analyst.

Opinion: Chizuma charges dropped as Chakwera erodes public trust

The phrase “when gods want to destroy you, they first make you mad” is often attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Euripides. It is generally understood to mean that when someone is driven to anger or madness, it can cloud their judgment and lead them to make decisions that can ultimately lead to their downfall. The idea is that by inducing a person to act irrationally, their own actions can contribute to their destruction, as if they are being pushed toward it by some higher power.

DPP Convention: Mutharika not standing
The race to succeed former President Peter Mutharika as the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been thrown wide open amid reports that the incumbent will no longer contest at the forthcoming convention slated for July this year.
Party insiders told the Citizen Mail that Mutharika, who, towards the end of last year had indicated that he will stand as the party leader at the convention, is no longer contesting.
“His children were here during the Christmas holidays and they stressed that he should not consider standing in the 2025 general elections,” a close source said.
“For the sake of his family and health, Mutharika was persuaded to dump his initial thoughts of battling it out in 2025.
“However, some party members keep on urging him to be the sole candidate for the party. These are just a few close associates who want to keep benefiting at the expense of others and by pushing him to contest they think they will still enjoy some presidential handouts.”
Another close source said the Catholic Bishops recently met Mutharika and informed him that the church will not support his candidature if he insisted on standing as the DPP presidential candidate.
“With these two key events Mutharika has softened and now looks at handing over power to the candidate who will win at the convention,” said the source.
Since his announcement that some supporters wanted him to stand, daggers were out for him with some bigwigs openly stating that they will not support him.
Mutharika has also been facing resistance from the youths within the party who feel that his candidature will scuttle efforts by the party to win back power.
“The youths are coalescing around Bright Msaka and this is not going down well with other contestants such as the leader of the opposition in parliament Kondwani Nankumwa,” the source said.
Responding to media inquiries over Mutharika’s re-election bid Namalomba said the party leader is mandated to contest if he so wishes.
“The DPP constitution does not have term limits. Remember he did not finish his term as president of the country which is why he wants to come back. Mutharika is very popular so for us the issue of age is nothing,” Namalombe said.
However, several party supporters fear that Mutharika’s candidature will gift the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) electoral victory in a silver platter.
“If he contests then MCP will win,” said one party supporter in Lilongwe. “His age will be a disadvantage and many people will vote for MCP even if they support DPP.”
Political analysts said Mutharika’s sentiments reveal deep-rooted factionalism in the party which has failed to die.
Zimbabwean based political commentator Alexander Rusero said this has been the tragedy of Africa.
“This has been Africa’s tragedy and setback. Party leaders believe they are the alpha and omega of the party such that they want to die in office. Mutharika must realise that his candidature will mean the end of DPP. He has to make sure that a competitive candidate is selected and contest elections. Why is it taking so long to hold a convention?” Rusero said.
