Referees Escorted by Police Following Tense Match
In a dramatic turn of events, Central Referee Matthews Chombo Davie, along with first assistant referee Sengani Tamandani, second assistant Maseko Hendrix, and two other officials, were compelled to seek police protection immediately after the goalless draw between Silver Strikers and Chitipa United.
The match concluded with a flurry of emotions as Silver Strikers' coach, Pieter De Jongh, exhibited visible frustration and sought a confrontation soon after the final whistle. Fortunately, the situation was defused by some members of his technical panel who intervened promptly.
De Jongh expressed his disappointment with the officiating of the game, claiming that it was poorly managed, as no additional time was given in either half.
"The referee has robbed me of two points! This is a disgrace to Malawi Football," De Jongh voiced his sentiments during a post-match interview.
On the other hand, Chitipa United's coach, Macdonald Mtetemera, who incidentally served as the former tactician for Silver Strikers, commended the overall quality of play despite his team's failure to capitalize on the chances they created.
Mtetemera acknowledged the significance of securing a draw, particularly considering the extensive travel distance they had to cover and the remarkable performance displayed just three days after their previous match.
"Covering a thousand kilometers is no small feat. Achieving a draw is a tremendous accomplishment, and I am immensely proud of the boys," Mtetemera expressed with satisfaction.
Chitipa United has recently gained substantial recognition following their consecutive victories against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, further enhancing their reputation in the football realm.
