Quality education, skilled manpower essential for GB’s sustainable development: President

Skardu, 14 June 2022: President Dr Arif Alvi has said that quality education and skilled manpower were essential for the sustainable development of Gilgit Baltistan. He said that achieving vocational training was imperative for all students, especially female students. He said that students could realize the dream of financial self-sufficiency through digital skills and freelancing training.
He expressed these views while addressing the fifth graduation ceremony (Convocation) of the University of Baltistan in Skardu. The President congratulated the graduating students, their parents and teachers and wished them a bright future.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that talented and skilled manpower was required to utilize the natural resources of Gilgit-Baltistan for the development and prosperity of the region and to meet the challenges of the future. The economic revolution could be carried out only through skilled manpower, he added.
He emphasised that the market was in dire need of skilled professionals, especially in the IT sector. He added that in the field of Cyber Security alone, 80 million IT professionals would be needed by the year 2030. He stated that the demand for 2-year associate degree programmes was growing and our universities should focus on these programmes.
The President highlighted that due to the changes in the field of Information Technology, the doors of the global market had opened up and Pakistani youth, especially women, can now market their services online and become financially independent. He said that Islam had allowed women to participate in economic activities, therefore, female students should also focus on honing their IT and digital skills which will enable them to earn a decent livelihood from the comfort of their homes. He asked the students to further polish their communication skills so that they could effectively market themselves through digital and online platforms.
The President further said that climate change was a major threat to the future of the region, therefore, universities needed to promote research to tackle the effects of climate change. He stated that efforts were needed to overcome the climate crisis and global warming by conserving nature and adopting eco-friendly practices.
On the occasion, the President further said that he was always happy to visit Gilgit-Baltistan as the people here have high spirits and enthusiasm for the development and stability of the country. He added that the students had worked hard to gain knowledge which was the greatest blessing of Allah Almighty. He advised the graduating students to keep their minds open and continue to gain knowledge throughout their lives.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khalid Khursheed Khan, welcomed the President to Gilgit-Baltistan and thanked him for his knowledge and special attachment to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. The Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan announced on the occasion that the provincial government was formulating a strategy for the establishment of three more universities in Gilgit-Baltistan with its own resources.
Earlier, the President was received by the Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Khalid Khurshid, Speaker Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Syed Amjad Zaidi, provincial ministers, senior civil officials and the administration of the university at the commencement ceremony.

Gilgit (INN) Pakistan will not be a party in conflict between China and US: CM GB Khalid Khurshid
Fake nationalism and sectarianism are a major threat to Pakistan. Problems are everywhere but solutions are sought, not hatreds. Promoting Pakistaniat in the youth is an important need of the hour. Pakistan will not be part of any war between China and the United States. Our fourth war against India will be a victory like conquest of Makkah. These views were expressed by Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid while addressing a one-day conference on “Gilgit-Baltistan-Our Pakistan” jointly organized by Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) and Karakoram International University. Chairman Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies Major General Muhammad Saad Khattak (R), former Director General of the Institute for Strategic Studies, Research and Analysis (ISSRA), Major General Samrez Salik (R), former caretaker Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan Sher Jahan Mir, former Advisor to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, renowned film star Shahzad Nawaz, renowned scholar Aziz Ali Daad, Coordinator for Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Yasir Abbas, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Dr. Khalil Ahmed, Dean Social Sciences Dr. Taswar Baig, Dr. Waheed Akhlaq, faculty of Department of Politics and International Studies Maryam Hussain, Managing Director PICSS Abdullah Khan, Managing Director of Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies. Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid said that no power in the world could compete with the Pakistani nation if it decided to do something. The tragedy that befell Syria, Iraq and Libya is in front of everyone. The aggression and evil design against Pakistan was more severe and terrible than the aggression against these countries but Pakistan defeated all these conspiracies and Pakistan will defeat these conspiracies in future too. He said Pakistan has already chewed up many of its enemies. "We have misunderstood Islam," he said. Islam means freedom for all and defense of the rights of all. Misuse of religion can be our narrow-mindedness. "The enemy targets areas where there is deprivation," he said. He said that Pakistan was the first state after the state of Madinah to be based on an Islamic ideology. "Fake nationalism and fake sectarianism are a great threat to our country," he said. Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid said that Pakistan would not be a part of any war between the United States and China. But our fourth war against India will prove to be a victory just like the conquest of Makkah by Muslims and the dream for which Pakistan was created will come true. Chairman Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies Major General Muhammad Saad Khattak (R) said that Pakistani youth have been sandwiched by religious and secular extremists. Our organization is trying to unite the youth under the banner of Pakistaniat by ridding them of all forms of extremism. Major General Sumrez Salik (R) said that the real problem in Pakistan is the crisis of leadership. He said that the deprivations of Gilgit-Baltistan and the demands of the people in this regard were quite legitimate. However, this will require mobilization of youth and local leadership. Former caretaker Chief Minister Sher Jahan Mir said that the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan were facing many challenges including sectarian tensions, quality education, climate change, lack of technical education and unemployment. He said that propaganda against CPEC was also a challenge. Work on CPEC slowed down. He said that the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan need to take advantage of online business opportunities. Leading film star and former adviser to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahzad Nawaz said that a nation which is financially dependent on others can never be politically independent. Quaid-e-Azam had declared Urdu as national language for national unity. He said that it was decided to make Urdu the official language more than 60 years ago but it has not been implemented till date. He said that the word ‘Pakistaniat’ has come to the fore for the first time in 2017 but despite the passage of six years it has not yet become a part of the dictionary. Yasir Abbas said that Gilgit-Baltistan is the only region that is struggling to integrate into Pakistan. Separatist movements are taking place in many other places. But Gilgit-Baltistan is still deprived of its legitimate rights. Aziz Ali Dad said that the nation is focused on the poetry of Allama Iqbal but no special attention is paid to the subject on which Allama Iqbal did his PhD or other subjects. Abdullah Khan said that we have built islands of small identities while our identity as Pakistani is overshadowed by these small islands. The Conference was attended by hundreds of youth from Gilgit-Baltistan.
