Tinubu Approves Consumer Credit Scheme Takeoff

President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the commencement of the Consumer Credit Scheme’s initial phase, aiming to reduce the cost of goods and services for Nigerians. Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale highlighted that consumer credit is fundamental to modern economies, allowing citizens to improve their living standards by obtaining goods and services immediately and paying over time.

He emphasized that consumer credit underpins significant acquisitions like housing, transportation, education, and healthcare, which are vital for individuals to chase their dreams with stability.

Ngelale remarked, "By making timely payments, people can establish credit histories, paving the way to a more prosperous existence.

"Moreover, the surge in demand for goods and services propels the growth of local businesses and generates employment opportunities.

“The President is committed to the idea that every industrious Nigerian deserves the chance for upward social movement, with consumer credit being a key instrument in realizing this goal.”

He also stated that the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) fulfills its role by "Enhancing Nigeria’s credit reporting frameworks, guaranteeing that every economically active individual has a reliable credit rating. This rating becomes a form of personal capital, easing the path to consumer credit.

"Providing credit assurances and bulk lending to financial entities focused on extending the reach of consumer credit presently.

“Advocating for prudent consumer credit usage as a means to elevate living standards, encouraging a societal evolution towards progress and fiscal prudence.”

In accordance with the President’s instructions to widen the availability of consumer credit for Nigerians, Ngelale announced that CREDICORP has introduced a platform for Nigerians to register their interest in obtaining consumer credit.

“This initiative, in collaboration with financial institutions and cooperatives nationwide, aims to broaden consumer credit availability.

The scheme will be rolled out in phases, starting with members of the civil service and cascading to members of the public,” he stated.

The biggest mistake in life is the way people position the value of education. Right from the beginning, people see going to university to be synonymous with a job.

But if you understand the value of education, education does not mean or equate to jobs. Education is designed to be a system to liberate the minds, and not a system to get jobs. Jobs are just one of the benefits or features associated with education.

This young man might have gotten it all wrong because for him, certificates = jobs, and if those papers do not deliver jobs, destroy them. That is not correct. The real value of education is the liberation of the mind, and what it does is clear: it makes you stand over jobs, because education puts you in a position to become bigger than jobs. Knowledge is power and it is bigger than jobs. A good education brings knowledge, which is liberation.

If we have knowledge, we cannot be ruled by jobs. We cannot fear jobs because we will have the capacity to own our future. I challenge us to develop skills and capabilities, and jobs, in different forms, will emerge. Find mentors and connect with people with visions, and stop a mindless act which adds no value!

BUA Cement reduces ex-factory cement prices to N3,500/bag effective October 2, 2023.

We refer to our previous pronouncements regarding our intent to reduce cement prices upon the completion of our new lines at the end of the year, in order to spur development in the building materials and infrastructure sectors.

As per the commitment made to reduce prices and following a periodic review of our operations for efficiency, the management of BUA Cement Plc wishes to announce and inform our esteemed customers, stakeholders, and the public that effective October 2, 2023, we have decided to bring the price reduction forward. As a result, BUA Cement would now be sold at an ex-factory* price of 3,500 Naira per bag so that Nigerians can begin to enjoy the benefits of the price reduction before the completion of our plants.

Upon completion of the ongoing construction of our new plants, which would increase our production volumes to 17million metric tonnes per annum, BUA Cement PLC intends to review these prices further in line with our earlier pronouncements by the first quarter of 2024.

NOTE: all pending, undelivered orders which had been paid for at the old prices will be reviewed downwards to N3500/bag in line with the new pricing from October 2, 2023. Our licensed dealers are also enjoined to ensure that end-users benefit from this reduction in ex-factory prices as we will monitor field sales to ensure compliance.

Following a recent incident involving two Constables escorting a Student Union president in Adamawa State, their actions were unacceptable and do not represent the values of our Force. The officers, who are attached to Jimeta Divisional Police Command, along with their superiors, have been summoned to the Force Headquarters for appropriate action.

It's important to note that they were deployed to maintain peace and security during the convention and electoral process organized by the National Union of Adamawa State Students (NUADSS) on 4th and 5th of September, 2023. However their actions were not in line with the purpose for which they were deployed. They have both been referred to the Force Provost for further disciplinary actions.
