JUST IN: Organised Labour Declares Nationwide Strike

By News Desk

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a nationwide strike beginning from Monday, June 3rd, 2024 over the tripartite committee’s inability to agree on a new minimum wage and hike in electricity tariff.

The President of the TUC Festus Osifo announced the strike at a joint news conference with the leadership of the NLC in Abuja on Friday.

According to the labour leaders, the decision follows the expiration of an earlier request to the Federal Government to conclude all negotiations for a new minimum wage before the end of May.

“In light of this persistent inaction, we, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), hereby issue a notice of commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike to the Federal Government,” Osifo said.

“We reiterate that since the National Minimum Wage negotiation exercise has not been concluded and the agreed wage passed into law; the hike in electricity tariff has not been reversed and the categorization of consumers into Bands has not stopped as demanded; Nigerian workers are compelled by these failures to embark on an indefinite nationwide industrial action beginning on Monday, the 3rd of June, 2024 to press home our demands.”

The organised labour had once pulled out of the negotiation and rejected two Federal Government offers, the latest being N60,000.

EFCC Commences Investigation On Alleged N2.5b Fraud Against Kwankwaso

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has commenced an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) campaign fund for 2023 elections and the failure of the Kwankwaso’s led National Working Committee to pay party agents that worked for the party in the 2023 presidential and governorship elections, across the country.

It was gathered that the anti-graft agency has invited the National Secretary of the party, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday to substantiate the allegations of fraud levelled against Senator Kwankwaso and his Private Secretary, Mrs Folashade Aliu, who is believed to be the ‘conduit pipe’ of Kwankwaso’s alleged misappropriation of party funds with campaign and donations secret account.

The sources made it clear that Oginni’s petition also allegedly indicted the signatories to the United Bank of Africa (UBA) account of New Nigeria People’s Party which includes Prof. Rufai Alkali, Abba Kawu and Dipo Olayokun.

“Consequently, the anti-graft agency may be compelled to probe the sudden wealth of Dipo Olayokun and how he acquired properties in choice areas of Abuja in less than two years of his tenure as signatory to NNPP’s account.

Confirming the development in a telephone chart with Vanguard in Abeokuta, the party National Secretary, Comrade Oginni said, he was a guest at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) headquarters in Abuja last week Wednesday to make statements and clarifications on the petition he signed on behalf of the party, alleging Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his team of N2.5 billon fraud.

“Truly, I was invited by the EFCC. I honoured the invitation and I was satisfied with the professionalism of EFCC officers. I answered questions related to the petition I signed on behalf of NNPP without any harassment or intimidation.

“They want to be sure that the allegations are true and without any ill motives. W

Security and military personnel are reportedly still securing the mini-palace in the Nasarawa area of Kano State, where the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, is occupying, despite a court order for his eviction.

According to Channels TV, stern-looking armed soldiers and policemen were seen around the mini-palace.

PUNCH had earlier reported that a Kano State High Court presided over by Justice Amina Aliyu ordered the police to evict the deposed Emir from the palace.

The court, which gave the order on Monday, also issued an interim injunction restraining Bayero and four other dethroned emirs from parading themselves as emirs, pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice filed by applicants.

The state Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam, also said that Bayero’s presence in Kano posed a threat to the peace and stability cherished by its people.

GOVERNOR ODODO DEDICATES TRIBUNAL VICTORY TO KOGI PEOPLE, WANTS OPPOSITION TO JOIN HIM TO MOVE STATE FORWARD

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo has hailed the decision of the Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which upheld his election as the duly elected Governor of the state.

In an interview with Journalists in Abuja on Monday, Governor Ododo dedicated the victory at the tribunal to the people of the state.

He noted that the decision of the tribunal that upheld his election further affirmed his conviction that God alone gives power to whomever He wishes at any point in life, adding that the ruling of the tribunal is a call for more dedication to the service of the people of Kogi State.

While commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring the independence of the judiciary, Governor Ododo stressed that the courts remain the hope of the common man and bastion of justice, equity and fairness that sustain democracy any where in the world.

The Governor called on opposition parties in the state to join hands with him to ensure rapid development of the state in the interest of unity and peaceful coexistence of the people of the state.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo was elected the fifth Executive Governor of Kogi State having scored 446, 237 votes to defeat his closest challenger Muritala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) who scored 259, 052 votes in the November 11, 2023 Governorship election.

The SDP candidate, Muritala Ajaka and candidates of the Action Alliance (AA) Olayinka Braimoh and Abdullahi Yunusa of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) subsequently challenged the election of Governor Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in separate petitions.

After months of intense legal battles, the Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Monday affirmed Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of the APC as the duly elected governor of Kogi State thereby dismissing the petitions of Muritala Ajaka of the SDP, Olayinka Braimoh of AA and Abdullahi Yunusa of PRP for lack of merit.

I’ve Accepted My Fate – Dethroned Emir Of Gaya

By News Desk

Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, former Emir of Gaya, says he has accepted his removal as an act of God.

The former Emir is among the five first-class kings who were affected by the repeal of the law which balkanised Kano Emirate and elevated them.

Reacting to the action of the governor in an interview with BBC Hausa, the dethroned monarch said he bore no grudge against anybody.

He added that he had no plan to challenge the action in court.

He said, “Nobody will feel happy about this development, but it is Allah that made you [on the throne], and everything has time.

“Allah has predestined that this would happen long before we were born, therefore we do not hold grudge against anybody. It is the will of Allah and we have accepted it wholeheartedly.

“This is how God wanted it, and it must be done that way. We have no intention of going to court. We have accepted it in good fate. We thank Allah.”

He also prayed for sustainable peace in Gaya and Kano State.

The former Emir spoke hours after protesters trooped to the streets of the former Emirate to reject its dissolution.

The protesters had asked Governor Yusuf to reverse the action, which they claimed had political undertone.

Tension In Kano As Dethroned Emir Moves Into Another Palace

By News Desk

Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero has moved into a palace in the ancient town.

It was gathered that Aminu Ado Bayero returned to the town in the early hours of Saturday.

The aircraft which conveyed the deposed Emir touched down at the Aminu Kano International Airport at around 4:30 am.

Bayero was immediately surrounded by his supporters who chanted a verse from Surah Al-Fatihah in the Holy Quran.

Bayero’s cavalcade was soon speeding through the lit roads of the city purportedly for the palace.

It could be recalled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who sacked Ado Bayero alongside other Emirs appointed by his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, had given them 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand over to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

He subsequently announced the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, whom Ganduje deposed in 2020.

The governor issued a reappointment letter to Sanusi on Friday and he led Jumat prayers at Government House, Kano.

But in the early hours of Saturday, Ado Bayero returned to Kano and was welcomed by a crowd of supporters.

He later moved into the mini-palace in Nassarawa, fueling confusion.

However, Sanusi II has taken over the Gidan Rumfa palace.

The two palaces are now under heavy security cover.
