By A***n Raya

A local activist group, 'Gorkhaland Activist Samuha', began a hunger strike in Darjeeling to express their support for Sonam Wangchuk's fight to protect Ladakh's unique cultural identity and tribal rights.

Wangchuk's demands center around the implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards tribal lands and grants autonomy to designated tribal areas. Residents fear the loss of these protections after the central government revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status in 2019.

Gorkhaland Activist Samuha worries that similar disregard for the rights of the people from this hills might follow as the demand for the 'sixth schedule' has been in the hills as well. They believe the lack of media coverage surrounding Ladakh's movement necessitates raising awareness. The group emphasizes the importance of self-reliance and youth participation in the for the betterment of the hills.

The Gorkhaland Activist Samuha is a non-political group formed on 13, July 2021 by Kishore Pradhan and his colleagues. Their primary goal or as they stated 'One point agenda' is the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state. They believe in achieving this objective through democratic means and progressive thinking.

Kishore Pradhan, the group's spokesperson, stated "The Indian News media is not covering the news in Ladakh properly, we the team of 'Gorkhaland Activist Samuha' when we came to know about the situation we had a realisation that the BJP government has given us false hope two times. Thought Ladakh was given more priority, their delegation was taken on charter demand, if their prefered demand was disqualified what will happen to us. The people of the hills themselves have to save our natural beauty. Youths have to be forward, dependency on the individual figures to come out will only lead to loss of time, all the youths of the hills should stop waiting and start moving forward towards the better future of the hills. "

In the quaint heart of Darjeeling, Nerdvana Cafe at Chowrasta became the nucleus of cinematic exploration on the evening of March 15th, 2024. The event, meticulously orchestrated by Sivi Gaurav and Sukraj Rai, unfolded as a testament to storytelling's power, transcending boundaries and embracing the essence of local culture through the lens of the cinema experience.

As the clock struck 6, attendees were ushered into a world where laughter and culinary cravings intertwined in the screening of "Momu" by Dzonga Films. Directed by Rahul Nawach Mukhia and starring Arbin Limbu, "Momu" is a comedy that delicately wraps the Nepali village life in a cinematic bouquet, using a 1:1 aspect ratio reminiscent of classic films. Through its narrative about a village boy's innocent heist of cabbages to satiate his momo cravings, the film navigates through emotions and mischievous antics, all captured through meticulously framed close-ups and a mise-en-scène that paints a vivid picture of Nepali households. The director's inspiration, akin to the whimsical chases in "Tom and Jerry," brought vigor to the tale, making "Momu" a heartfelt ode to simple joys and the universal language of food.

The second oeuvre of the evening, "Eat Me Stupid," directed and produced by Sivi Gaurav (Fancy Lasun), featuring Neden Yolmo, ventured into the peculiar and untamed territories of phobias and fascinations. The story, centered around a girl's uncontrollable craving for frog noodles, unfolds a narrative rich in emotion and bizarre culinary adventure, set against a backdrop that oscillates between the familiar and the fantastical. Through close-up shots that capture the turmoil of craving and the mise-en-scène that envelopes the audience in the protagonist's world, Gaurav crafts a story that is as much a confrontation of personal fears as it is an invitation to explore them. His personal admission of a frog phobia adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative, challenging viewers to confront their own apprehensions.

The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session. Special thanks was given to Mr. Sukraj Rai for his captivating illustrations in "Eat Me Stupid".

Hill Communities Await Resolution Amidst Political Promises

By

March 9th marked a day of anticipation and reflection for hill communities, as they grappled with ongoing challenges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reassured the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) commitment to understanding and addressing the concerns of the Gorkha people. He stated “The BJP has consistently made efforts to alleviate your concerns. We are still close to finding solutions. The BJP will continue its efforts to fulfil your expectations."

Despite the BJP's electoral successes, including consecutive wins in 2014 and 2019, a lasting solution to the region's issues remains elusive.

Residents of the hills remain sceptical of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and recall a history of neglect during the tenure of past administrations from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress.

While MP Raju Bista and MLA Neeraj Zimba, have advocated for a separate state and tribal status for 11 Hill Communities with better infrastructure, this proposal was conspicuously absent from PM Modi's recent speech.

As the community eagerly awaits progress, PM Modi highlighted the BJP's efforts to support tea growers and farmers, including measures to integrate them into financial schemes and increase support prices for crops like jute. However, he also criticised the incumbent TMC government for alleged corruption and failure to implement welfare programs effectively.

In addition to addressing broader concerns, PM Modi's remarks resonated with individuals' day-to-day struggles. He emphasised the BJP's commitment to providing free ration and healthcare to impoverished families, contrasting this with accusations of malfeasance and mismanagement by the TMC.

Despite the complexities of politics, the people in the hills continue to hope for meaningful change and solutions to their longstanding issues. They remain vigilant, holding onto the promise of progress while scrutinising the actions of those in power.

Darjeeling Lok Sabha Constituency: A Political Sum-up

By Praful Gurung

Darjeeling is one of the 42 parliamentary seats in West Bengal, centred around the town of Darjeeling. The constituency has a rich history of political activism, particularly through the Gorkhaland movement, advocating for a separate state for the Gorkha community. This movement has played a pivotal role in shaping the region's political narrative. The constituency has seen a varied representation over the years. Notable Members of Parliament (MPs) include Theodore Manaen, Maitreyee Basu, Ananda Pathak, and more recently, Raju Bista, They are from The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), Indian National Congress (INC), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have all had a share in representing Darjeeling in Parliament. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Raju Bista emerged victorious with a substantial margin of 4,13,443 votes, securing 59.08% of the votes. This victory marked the BJP's continued presence in the constituency since 2009. Bista's win reflected the BJP's growing influence in the region.

As per the Election Commission data, during the 2019 elections, Darjeeling constituency had a total of 1,437,126 electors, with 817,687 male voters and 793,609 female voters. Additionally, there were 7,145 postal votes and 10,753 service voters. The estimated Scheduled Caste population in the constituency is 5.52%.

The BJP's stronghold in Darjeeling is noteworthy, indicating a possible continuity in its representation. However, the political landscape in Darjeeling remains dynamic, with emerging regional parties like BGPM and HP gaining traction. This suggests a shifting political paradigm where stability and development may outweigh disruptive tactics.

As the constituency navigates through its political journey, it remains a microcosm of India's diverse political fabric. With the Lok Sabha election on the horizon, the question arises: which party will win the Darjeeling constituency? Comment Below!

We the entire team of Darj Youth Magazine extend our warmest wishes to our esteemed readers on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. Today, as we immerse ourselves in the divine vibrations of this sacred day, let us reflect upon the profound messages of Lord Shiva - resilience, tranquility, and the eternal cycle of creation and destruction that underpins the universe.

Maha Shivratri is not just a celebration but a day to honor the cosmic dance of Shiva, reminding us of the impermanence of life and the importance of detachment, meditation, and the pursuit of righteousness. It's a day to observe fasts, offer prayers, and seek blessings for spiritual growth and well-being.

As we celebrate this holy day amidst the majestic beauty of Darjeeling, let's embrace the essence of Shiva within us - to destroy the negativity, to foster positivity and harmony in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

May this Maha Shivratri enlighten your heart and soul, bringing peace, prosperity, and happiness to you and your family. Om Namah Shivaya!
