On Monday, March 21st, Nuchatlaht First Nation is taking the B.C. government to court to reclaim their territory on the northern part of Nootka Island, which their people have inhabited for thousands of years. This is going to be the first Indigenous title case in BC since the landmark Tsilhqot'in decision and the passage of BC's UNDRIP law. But the BC government is still arguing in court that the Nuchatlaht "abandoned" their territory. As their attorney Jack Woodward says, "They didn't abandon their territory. It was stolen from them."
Check out the video we made for Nuchatlaht to help tell their story. Donate to their legal fund if you are able. And please show up to the Vancouver Law Courts at Nelson and Hornby on Monday, March 21st to show your support for the nation. There will be a rally starting at 8:30am on the steps of the courthouse. Hope to see you there!
