Marsha P. Johnson was a gender non-conforming African American and self-identified drag queen known for her activism and leadership during the gay rights movement in the ‘70s, as well as being a prominent figure during the Stonewall uprising of 1969. When asked what the “P” stood for her in her name, she always answered “Pay it no mind” as a way to unapologetically claim her identity that fell far beyond the gender binary.
