From Healthing by Postmedia Machado: Say what you want about long wait lists and overcrowded waiting rooms and burned out staff, but this sort of sloughing off of worry, concern and empathy has nothing to do with a healthcare system that's barely standing. Rather, it's about a healthcare professional unable to take a moment to consider the human in front of them.
From Healthing by Postmedia Despite a dismal 10-per-cent expectation of survival, there once was a mom who took a shot. It was a monumental effort, getting her sick child on a plane to Canada, advocating for him and learning about his disease, but after a gruelling stem cell transplant at SickKids and a yearlong recovery, he is now a young adult with his whole life ahead of him. Ask her now what she would have done with even worse odds, and she’ll tell you that she would have still tried.

Deaths from toxic drugs were down — but barely — last year after a record 2,306 lives were lost in 2021, according to a report from the B.C. Coroners Service released Tuesday. The number of deaths dipped just 34 to 2,272 in 2022 as B.C. continues to “experience tremendous harm and loss as a result of the province’s toxic illicit drug supply,” according to chief coroner Lisa Lapointe. Jimi Sandhu didn’t look concerned about a thing as he parked his red rental car behind the luxury villa where he was staying just north of Friendship Beach here in Phuket. It was 10:32 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2022. He casually got out of the driver’s seat before reaching back into the MG ZS car to grab a few things from the centre console and sun visor. As he shut the car door and turned toward Villa A, his killers burst from around a corner and opened fire. He had no time to react, nowhere to run. Crime reporter Kim Bolan travelled to Thailand to uncover new details about the assassination of UN gangster Jimi Sandhu. Her story retraces the steps of the two men accused in the attack and the international team of authorities who tracked them.
