Music Production Toolkit for The 21st Century
This collaborative course will utilize a state-of-the-art midtown Manhattan recording studio to create professionally produced pieces of music. The course provides a unique opportunity for students to learn music production--from the idea stage to arranging, tracking, mixing and mastering, and beyond. Participants will be taking a song and seeing it th
rough to a fully produced track which is ready for today’s cutting edge sound and media. Students come away with tracks that are ready for posting online and / or pressing onto discs -- a nice finished product that they can share and keep forever. Musicianship in its many forms is emphasized throughout: playing and recording techniques, music theory, composition and songwriting, informed listening, basic principles of sound, engineering and producing; we'll also explore the art of knowing where your music fits into today's musical landscape and media, and using that knowledge to your advantage. Differentiated learning experiences are built in: Students gain exposure to all aspects of the production process, and they can choose to focus primarily on playing and singing, songwriting, arranging, engineering, mixing and mastering, or producing. From intro-level to advanced methods, students will gain real-world music production and life experience that can give them a head start towards college, audio engineering school, music school, and careers in music production and the music industry. The 21st Century Music Production Toolkit program is based on a cooperative learning experience. Students will work side by side to reach a common goal where everybody’s skills and input are valued and essential to the success of the final product. Parallels between music production software and applications and other types of software (such as graphic design programs) will be underscored, and students will gain an increased computer literacy across the board in the process.
