The FBI knew, and yet, Mason Schermerhorn, Christian Angulo, Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie are now dead.

Yesterday, a 14-year-old student killed four people at Apalachee High School in Georgia with an AR-15-style rifle. Two 14-year-old students and two teachers were killed in the shooting. Eight students and one teacher are hospitalized but expected to survive.

In May 2023, FBI officials were informed of potential school shooting threats made on Discord by the student. After further investigation, the shooter’s father stated that he owned hunting guns but that his son did not have unattended access to them. After being confronted with the allegations, the shooter claimed he deleted the account after it was hacked several times. Investigators stated that there was not enough evidence for an arrest.

The shooter is currently being detained at the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.

We have decided to withhold the shooter’s identity to avoid glorifying their actions.

These movies are of the summer we want everyone to have, a time full of hope and growth and forgiveness, of fleeting people and places that change your life forever.

Summer is a gasp for air in the sea of endless assignments, internships, jobs, and college monotony. It’s a quieter, more reflective time. As we transition from the last weeks of summer to the full bristle of the fall semester, we wanted to share some movie recommendations that capture young adulthood that may provide some comfort and empathy.

These films are slower moving, hazy, dreamlike, and driven more by character than plot. You sit with these people, understand them, and in kind, can maybe be more gentle to yourself. These characters are also working dead-end summer jobs so they can afford school, falling in love with people they shouldn’t, forming long lasting friendships, and coming face to face with who they think they are versus who others think they may be.

As children, we would often ask each other what superpower we’d want if given the opportunity.

“To be invisible” was always a popular choice. As children, invisibility is autonomy. But for Afghan women, invisibility is imprisonment.

When the Taliban reasserted their rule in Afghanistan in 2021, the destruction of women’s rights was swift and brutal.

Afghan women are banned from attending school beyond the sixth grade. Attending healthcare appointments without a male chaperone is prohibited. In most provinces, women are also banned from leaving their houses without a male relative.

Women are limited to employment in healthcare or education sectors. Appearing on television, playing sports, or going to the park is illegal.

When leaving the household, women are required to wear burqas, a traditional Islamic garment that covers the entirety of the body besides the eyes. What was once a way for Muslim women to express their religious piety has now been diminished to a symbol of control over an entire nation of women.

In our youth, invisibility was freedom. Today, an entire nation of women has become invisible in less than four years.

In June, the FDA officially rescinded the order that banned Juul production and marketing in 2022. Data from the American Lung Association indicates that va**ng has been linked to an increase in respiratory issues and a wide variety of health concerns.

Florida has become infamous for heralding itself as a state of choice while stripping citizens of their bodily autonomy through recent legislation imposing a six week abortion ban and now infringing upon the rights of the LGBT community.

A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of Florida’s ban on transgender care for minors, a decision that has sparked widespread controversy.

The ban, approved by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, asserts that in Florida transgender minors cannot receive puberty blockers and other gender affirming care.

In addition to removing autonomy and freedom of choice from families, the ban targets transgender adults as well, stating their treatments must come from a doctor and no other practitioner, even if they are qualified in other states.

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have been stuck on the International Space Station since June 6th following their spacecraft experiencing malfunctioning thrusters and helium leaks. The trip was originally supposed to be an eight-day trip. It’s been three months…

Now, before anyone panics, they’re not stuck stuck. Space X will make room on their Crew-9 launch to pick up Wilmore and William…in February.

I guess for once we can say thanks to Elon Musk 😅

The 2024 Democratic National Convention just finished in Chicago. Here’s our take:

Kamala Harris’ campaign continues to rely on pop culture to appeal to Gen Z and Millennial voters through performances by Pink and Stevie Wonder while heralding Beyoncé’s “Freedom” as her election anthem. Although there were whispers of a potential Beyoncé and/or Taylor Swift performance, neither were in attendance.

The DNC postured itself as a testament to America’s unity and strength through “reclaiming” motifs of camouflage and American iconography, shown in recently released camouflaged merch by the Harris-Walz campaign.

Prominent figures spoke such as former president’s Barack Obama and Bill Clinton as well as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), Sen. Bernie Sanders, and current president Joe Biden. These figures are central figures in the Democratic Party, particularly younger voters. In particular, giving AOC a platform on such a mainstream stage is potentially another nod by Harris to younger voters - she is not as stagnant as her older, more established counterparts.

Last night ended with a speech by Harris herself. Once again, Harris centered her message on being a platform for every American: a stance the Democratic Party has held firm on since the Obama era. Her high energy as well as her slogan, “We Are Not Going Back” has also mirrored Obama era optimism.

Both parties understand the power of Gen Z hope even if their approaches are vastly different. That is clear.

If you can take any message from either the RNC or DNC: they are desperate for your support. Be the change you want to see. Register and vote.

August 20th (aka TODAY!!) is the final day to vote in the Florida primary election. Local elections are just as important as national ones despite the lack of urgency in our nation 🙄

Why you ask? Think of our democratic system as a funnel. Who you vote for today to represent you in the Gainesville City Commission leads directly to your party’s candidates in the State House and Congress.

It’s time for Gen Z to stop complaining about the political climate on social media and start taking action to make a difference.

No one was expecting it, but when ripped out that iconic, high-pitched screech while recording Charlie XCX’s Von dutch remix, Rae set her rebrand into motion.

Gone are the days of TikTok Hype House wannabe dancing in cheugy pieces. Now, Rae has been regularly spotted sporting Y2K tops, hot shorts and any funky combination of shoes (she was once even spotted wearing flats with LEG WARMERS…like ok) 👠🍒

But what was the final nail in the coffin? The release of her latest single “Diet Pepsi,” which shocked everyone with her airy voice and Brittany Spears esque lyrics. Basically, we think she’s here to stay. The days of TikTok dances are no more for this pop star👏

It’s a common fixture on young adult bookshelves. A blush pink lily shattering like glass on top of the title “It Ends With Us.” And of course, the novel’s author, Colleen Hoover, plastered across the bottom.

Love it or hate it, the book’s popularity made a film adaption inevitable. It’s got Tinseltown sensation Blake Lively playing our flower shop-owning heroine, Lily Bloom (wow, that’s not on the nose at all) and Jane the Virgin’s Justin Baldoni as Ryle Kincaid, your stereotypical tortured, bad boy MMC.

But as the movie progresses, Ryle’s treatment of Lily isn’t giving your typical dark-haired, brooding love interest. In fact, this movie isn’t about romance at all.

It’s about domestic abuse.

“It Ends With Us” isn’t the next household staple, but viewers were shocked by their genuine tears being shed as the end credit scenes rolled. It’s an enjoyable film, but there’s a major issue: The book is about domestic violence, so why was it marketed like a love story?

Blake Lively and the film’s PR team have been criticized for their misguided promotion of the film. Upbeat and flowery campaigns sell a different product to consumers, and the lack of trigger warnings or abuse disclosures is concerning.

“It Ends With Us” has been praised, criticized, and everything in between. We all have our own opinions on films, but audiences deserve to be aware of the serious subject matter it addresses.

On July 28th, Venezuela’s presidential election was tainted by blatant fraud, undermining the hopes of millions for a fair and transparent process. Nicolás Maduro claims to have won the election, despite clear evidence that Edmundo Gonzalez secured about 70% of votes.

The USA, along with nine Latin American countries neighboring Venezuela, has called for a full disclosure of election results. This request highlights the growing international pressure for transparent and reliable democratic processes in Venezuela.

The opposition leaders, María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, are standing firm against the corruption and injustice. Venezuelans are flooding the streets to protest, putting their lives at risk in hopes of achieving real change and justice.

Now more than ever, we must support their fight for a government that truly represents the will of the people.

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, addressed Congress on Wednesday pledging to carry on with the war in Gaza until Israeli hostages are released and Hamas is eliminated.

Over 500 American Jews marked Netanyahu’s arrival at Congress by protesting the funding of Israel’s military from the United States, with many other protests happening across D.C.

Since Oct. 7, Congress has sent more than $14 billion to the Israeli military - on top of the 3.8 billion sent each year - with Biden approving over 100 individual weapon transfers. This was Netanyahu’s first public address to the US despite our major involvement in the war.

After meeting with the Biden and Kamala Harris on Wednesday, Harris implored with Netanyahu to accept a cease-fire deal to pause fighting in Gaza and release the hostages.

On Friday, Netanyahu called for a meeting with former President DJT for the first time post-presidency. The two were close allies during the time of Trump’s presidency but have faced tensions since the Israeli Prime Minister congratulated Joe Biden on winning the election in 2020. Since then, DJT has been been critical of Netanyahu’s management of the war in Gaza.

This isn’t to say Trump is Pro-Palestine - he’s far from it - but he does seem eager for the war to end.
