Good day! I've got some exciting news to share.

Since my kids grew up and moved out, it has allowed me more time to focus on my wife, myself, and my business. But I've been so blessed with a great family, business, and community, that I thought there could be other projects to take on.

I found an organization online called Welcome Connect that allows a person or group to sponsor people fleeing other countries because of war or danger. My wife and I identified a family in Ukraine that was looking to come to America for opportunity and to escape the war. While they are in a small town in Western Ukraine, they experience daily power outages and sometimes water also. The boy speaks very good English and builds websites and IT sorts of things to help make money for the family. The mother works at a clothing store and the father does construction work. The father can't leave because he's 56 and could be drafted until 60. But he wants his son and wife to be safe and his son could get drafted at 18 (although there is no draft there now) and the boy is 16. We messaged with him (the boy) some and agreed to sponsor them. Then we did a video chat with the family and it was a wonderful experience seeing them so bright and happy about their potential future.

The program that allows them to come is called Uniting For Ukraine and we filled out the immigration paperwork for them and waited. They were approved this week.

They got their paperwork in order and have been granted travel authorization. While there is no date set yet, my wife and I will be welcoming them at the Orlando airport within a month and the boy, Nazar, will enroll in high school here and we will work to get them settled, teach the mother English, teach them to drive and find jobs. This program allows them 2 years here at which time I do not know yet what happens but if their country is settled I'm sure they will want to go back to their father and husband.

The reason I am sharing this today is:
1. I am really excited for this!
2. We are needing to find them a car and can use any help with that so I am crowd sourcing for your ideas. We could start GoFundMe but first I want to see if anyone reading this might have a car this family could use.
3. The mother, Maryanna, will need a job. She doesn't speak much English but we will be getting her into classes right away. Just something to think about as she will need to get settled and learn some English but eventually we will need help finding her that job. She teaches Russian and Ukrainian now so maybe she can do some of that somehow.

We have agreed to fly them here, give them a place to stay, buy food, internet, and get them settled in all the ways we can. Our biggest next goal is a car for them which we can licence, insure, and buy gas for. How can we afford this? Because we have a successful business with wonderful customers like you and we are eager to give back in creative and helpful ways. My son graduated from UF last year and just got his first job with the state of Tennessee! He's on his own now🤪

Our resources are still limited of course but we are excited to do all we can at this moment. My sister just called this morning and is offering a nice bed which we needed but we have the rest of the furniture we need for now.

Send any information to me: [email protected] and please use the subject Ukraine.

Thanks so much for reading this and helping to spread the word by liking the post and sharing it with a broader audience. I am also still working very hard to increase efficiency at Satchels. Sometimes the pizzas still take too long to get out and I am putting extra people on the shifts, training, and trying my best to solve this. Fortunately we are still growing and learning and eager to make crispy delicious pies. 🍕

Let's all hope for peace in Ukraine. ☮️

Sitting in with Phish for the last two nights was nothing short of a surreal experience, like something out of one of my wildest dreams — A couple days ago I remembered they were playing van andel and I hit up Trey for tickets.. he replied and said we should blow it up and I just about s**t my pants.. I was just trying to come see the show and I had no idea I’d be in it for the next two nights. I’m thinking “okay maybe I’ll have to learn a song or something” and I ended up playing a bunch of the second set and encore both nights which means I had ample time to go swimming with the band. It was just magic. As a phan, to be on that stage with those fellers and just hear it.. to feel it all so close.. and then to be able to interact with it. To poke it a little bit and tickle it and pet it .. and then to have it react!! I know it’s sacred.. and that band is AIRTIGHT after playing together for all these years .. I didn’t want to get in the way too much, I was already feeling like I shouldn’t be up there fu***ng up their show .. they’re so good. They don’t need me up there wanking all over the joint.. but they asked me to so of course I’m gonna go try!!
The crowds energy was one pulsating organism, speaking us into existence. Defining and deciding the notes we all play as one collective heartbeat. The camaraderie and seamless interplay between the band and crowd was never so evident. To see it from that perspective, it was just so concentrated.
I can’t speak enough about the kindness of the band as well.. I only really knew Trey and I didn’t know if the other guys wanted me there too or what.. but when I got there for soundcheck, it was like walking on stage to jam with old friends. They were all so welcoming and nice. The nerves instantly melted and we just let the music carry us off into the evening. It all settled into place and we had an absolute blast. Thank you Trey, Page, Mike and Jon for inviting me into your space .. it is something I will never forget as long as I live 🙏 // 📸 Rene Huemer
