“Suddenly, it’s the summer of s*x. We talk about it constantly, go to Spencer’s to buy little pink vi*****rs and have our first experiences with s*xuality. Talking about s*x is a high, the kind that my friends enjoy recreationally. But I quickly become hooked.

Unlike my peers, I fall in love with the subject, not just the act. I’m obsessed with learning more about why people do what they do and why it impacts us so deeply.

When my senior year of high school starts, I decide to spend the year researching my hometown’s need for s*x ed. When I found that over 90% of parents and students in my county — across parties, genders and religions — wanted comprehensive s*x education it hit me: This could be my career.”

“Do I leave your mind
as fast as you exit the roundabout,
an everyday encounter with no story?
Another fingerprint. No matter
how hard it’s pressed
into the mold of those I meet,
the mark always fades.”

“What kind of person do you want to be? What kind of individuals do you want to be surrounded by?

Sahire answers these questions for themself: ‘I know that I drive a bus, but I don’t see myself as a bus driver,’ they say. ‘I am so many other things.’

Sahire won’t identify as a writer or a singer, despite a passion for both. No, they don’t just do the arts. They are in love with them. It’s not a job Sahire can clock out of. It’s a perpetual state of being, one that draws them deeper into admiration, learning, yearning.”

“Words in motion” by Luena Rodriguez-Feo Vileira is now live on our website. Click the link in our bio to learn more about the double life of this artistic individual.

Avin Posen, a 33-year-old hairstylist, found their calling in providing gender-affirming haircuts in a state where gender-affirming healthcare is constantly under attack.

At the Goldenrod Parlor in Gainesville, Avin is surrounded by the sound of snipping scissors and hair dryers as they do all they can to make their customers feel safe and comfortable. The haircut is the customer’s choice and Avin’s mission.

A haircut can make or break someone’s day. Avin makes sure every q***r or transgender customer leaves the salon feeling like they belong in their skin.

“More than just a good hair day” by Delia Rose Sauer is now live on our website. Visit the link in our bio to hear Avin’s story. ✂️

“Becky Goodman, 49, is a squirrel savior.

As an animal rehabber based in Gainesville, she rescues injured squirrels, treats and cares for them in designated enclosures and releases them into the wilderness again.

It’s a physically and emotionally taxing job. But the perseverance of squirrels like her pet Penny, who sustained such intense injuries that she can’t live in the wild, make the cuts and bruises and regular hospital visits worthwhile.”

“Squirrel salvation” by Lauren Brensel is now live on our website. Visit the link in our bio to dive into the life of Becky Goodman.

“Zechariah Blanchard grew up with one hand on a motor and the other in a toolbox.

Ever since he was four he has been learning the ins and outs of mechanical work, and he has become an expert in vehicle diagnostics.

Now he uses this valuable knowledge to support his three children, who he raises on his own.“

“In January 1954, a moonless night settled over a small college town in the swampy heart of Florida. The University of Florida campus in Gainesville was quiet, its dorm rooms mostly empty awaiting winter break’s end. But morning at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house brought a bloody discovery.

Not far from Lake Alice, an on-campus oasis for both students and wildlife, lived Albert the Alligator, UF’s live mascot. Albert’s home was not the lake or its marshy shores but the SigEp backyard. Albert spent his days in a chain-link pen, his only oasis a small, muddy pool.

Lent from the Ross Alligator Farm in nearby Silver Springs, Albert was 10 years old when he made his debut at the Florida-Georgia Tech football game in the fall of 1953.

That winter, while students emptied campus for the holidays, Albert waited alone for the next game where he would be lugged in front of a stadium full of cheering fans. He was the embodiment of UF school spirit but also the target of its rivals. He was often painted and doused in alcohol, historic news clippings show — abuse that masqueraded as game-day antics.”

“Mascot for cruelty” by Sarah Henry is now live on our website. Visit the link in our bio to explore the deep history behind this well-known mascot.
