His Excellency the President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in exercise of the powers under section 84 of the constitution of the Republic of Malawi has appointed Dr. Michael Usi as Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.

Dr. Michael Usi is expected to take oath of office on Friday, 21st June 2024 at the Parliament Building.

The appointment follows the death of Vice President Dr. Saulosi Chilima who died in a plane crash along 8 others.

Stakeholders in the to***co industry have been urged to adhere to the guiding industry labour laws.

Speaking during the launch of the To***co Industry Agriculture Labour Practices Code in Lilongwe, Minister of Labour, Agnes Nyalonje says government is committed to ensuring that every child is protected to not fall victim of child labour.

She further emphasized that the code will among others ensure zero tolerance to all forms of forced labour and human trafficking.

The launched practices code has been developed with support from Elimination of Child Labour in To***co - ECLT Foundation.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Michael Usi has called on players in the fish industry to ensure the availability of fish at affordable prices to benefit rural Malawians.

The Minister was speaking in Lilongwe during a High level multi-stakeholder dialogue session on the national plan of action for small scale fisheries in Malawi that is currently underway in Lilongwe.

Usi said it is quite disheartening to see most Malawians failing to access fish and miss out on it's valuable nutrients due to high prices on the market.

On his part, FAO Country Representative Dr. Chen Zhijun, commended the government for taking an active role in promoting fish farming.

The Ministry of Tourism says it is geared to ensure quality service delivery in the tourism industry.

Speaking in Lilongwe during an interface with the Presidential Delivery Unit, Principal Secretary in the ministry, Chancy Simwaka says there is need to provide training to those in tourism industry to up their game.

Simwaka cited poor road network and expensive airline charges among others as some of the challenges rocking the tourism industry.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has left the country for Dallas, Texas, United States of America to attend the US-Africa Business Summit.

Speaking before his departure, Chakwera emphasised on the importance of the summit as a channel for Malawian and American business individuals to establish particular agreements, underscoring the potential for beneficial collaborations between the two parties.

The President and First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera were seen off at Kamuzu International Airport by Vice President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima , cabinet ministers, and other senior government officials.

President Chakwera is expected to return on 10th May, 2024 through Kamuzu International Airport.

EVERYONE TOURISM...SAYS PRESIDENT CHAKWERA.

His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has called on all Malawians to be promoters of the country's tourism potential and a better image of the country.

President Chakwera made the call when he was presiding over the official opening of the Takulandirani 2024 Malawi International Tourism Expo which is currently underway at BICC in Lilongwe.

President Chakwera has emphasized on the spirit of Malawians to be the first to promote local tourism. He highlighted that Malawi's tourism potential has earned it a spot to host the high profile Globe Fund meeting expected to take place in a few months.

Under the theme , Everything...Tourism, the forum will run from 25th to 27th April 2024

Malawi has signed a charter signifying that it is now the official member of the African Mineral Strategy Group.

The signing ceremony between Malawi and the African Mineral Strategy Group has taken place in Lilongwe with Minister of Mining, Hon. Monica Chang'anamuno signing on behalf of the Malawi.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Minister of Mining says Malawi stands to benefit alot by being a member of the group as it will protect the interests of miners among others.

All is set for this year's Malawi Tourism Expo 2024 which is slated to take place at BICC in Lilongwe on Thursday 25th April, 2024.

His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi has called on Malawians to value the country's rare mineral resources that are valuable at an international market.

President Chakwera was speaking in Lilongwe when he presided over the 2024 Malawi Mining Investment Forum under the theme: Transforming the nation through sustainable mineral extraction.

The President has called on stakeholders to question and evaluate why Malawi is still a poor country while we have valuable mineral resources.

He cited ignorance on various mineral substances as a great hindrance towards making the necessary profits, citing there is need to have mining laboratories situated in Malawi.

President Chakwera has also encouraged financial institutions in the country to take a leading role in financing the mining sector in the country.

His Excellency, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi has called on the judiciary to be the beacon of hope for Malawians when it comes to justice delivery.

President Chakwera was speaking in Lilongwe during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Chief Justice, Lovemore Chikopa SC.

Chakwera further emphasized that Malawians believed in his administration to turn around their lives for the better, hence justice delivery is among his priority areas.

PRESIDENT CHAKWERA SWEARS IN NEW DEPUTY CHIEF JUSTICE

His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, has this morning administered an oath of office, to the new Deputy Chief Justice, Lovemore Chikopa SC, at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

President Chakwera appointed Justice Chikopa as Deputy Chief Justice, earlier this week, pursuant to Section 111 (2) of the Constitution of Malawi.

Chikopa, a Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal judge, becomes the inaugural Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) and his appointment comes almost three years after Parliament passed the Constitution Amendment Bill, which created the position.

Present at the swearing-in ceremony were several top government officials including Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Colleen Zamba.

Justice Chikopa holds a Bachelor of Law (Honours) degree from the University of Malawi, which he obtained in 1987 and a Master of Business Administration degree, obtained in 2021 from the University of Zambia.

Justice Chikopa joined the Judiciary in 1998 as Principal Resident Magistrate and later rose to the rank of Chief Resident Magistrate.

He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 2000 and Justice of Appeal in 2012.

Before joining the Judiciary, he worked as State Advocate in the Ministry of Justice and later worked for Small Enterprise Development of Malawi (SEDOM) before joining the office of the Ombudsman as Principal Investigations Officer.

Justice Chikopa is also the Judge President of the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Chairperson of the Performance Appraisal and Communication Committees within the Judiciary.

He becomes the first Deputy Chief Justice of the Malawi Judiciary since the Constitution was amended to provide for the office of the Deputy Chief Justice.

The Mwapata Institute, a local think-tank, is calling on the government to expand its social protection initiatives to shield vulnerable Malawians from external shocks. Professor Levison Chiwaula who is a research director at the institute, emphasized this crucial need during a press briefing today at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

Chiwaula highlighted the inadequacies of current social protection schemes, particularly the low disbursement amounts and short durations of programs like social cash transfers.

These recommendations stem from three comprehensive studies conducted by the Mwapata Institute with support from Irish Embassy, focusing on the impact of climate-related shocks and rising costs on social protection programs such as subsidies and cash transfers.

The MwAPATA Institute, in collaboration with Pyxus Agriculture Limited and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has emphasized the significance of agricultural diversification and the importance of raising awareness about aflatoxin contamination in the groundnut sector. This emphasis was made during the Aflatoxin Research event in Lilongwe, which was centered on understanding aflatoxin contamination in Malawian grains.
