Powerful story to end 🖤💛❤️

"Growing up as an Aboriginal woman in the modern world is completely different to the world my grandmother grew up in, when she was my age.

My grandmother Veronica Brodie (pictured on my phone) was a proud Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna woman. She faced many difficulties and challenges being an Aboriginal woman and navigating her way through life. At 14 she was moved away from her family at Raukkan and placed under care with ‘United Aborigines Mission’ / ‘Aborigines Protection Board’.

When my grandmother and my grandfather got married, my grandmother was told she had to sign an exemption, a piece of paper that stated she no longer identified as Aboriginal and that she was no longer allowed to return to her home community, Raukkan. This was because my grandfather was a light skinned Aboriginal Man, who was classified by the government as ‘non-Indigenous’.

I am grateful to feel appreciated and respected as an Aboriginal Woman today. I have been offered amazing opportunities within work and the community to share my culture, which is something my grandmother was shamed for when she was my age. My grandmother had a lot of community involvement, which encourages and inspires me in the work that I do. I will continue to work within the Aboriginal Community, to help create change that my grandmother and all the women before her hoped for." - Emma, Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Mirning woman from Adelaide. "Strength is an innate part of being Aboriginal, without it we'd be long gone. But my people have a proud history of fighting for what's right, for what we love - this land, our people. For centuries now we have shown strength in the face of untold adversity, and that's what we all need to keep doing, because change is on the horizon, you can sense it, we just need the strength to keep pushing for it, because that's what our children and grandchildren deserve. A free, equal and just country." - Kveta Vlotman, Jardwadjali, Gunditjmara, Wotjobulak woman from Western Victoria National NAIDOC Naidoc South Australia

Fascinating insight from a truly inspiring young woman ✊🏿✊✊🏿

"As an Aboriginal Woman I have been taught from birth how to exist between two worlds. My dream is to create a movement that means we no longer face this daily dilemma. I don’t want my unborn child to have to fight this fight that our ancestors have been for hundreds of years. This country needs to embrace its first people so we can discover all that it can be." - Keisha Milera National NAIDOC
