NIIT at a Glance

NIIT is a market-leading, Managed Training Services company with 40 years of experience in learning outsourcing. With 500 full-time instructional designers (IDs) and a global footprint that spans more than 40 countries, NIIT’s goal is to help the world’s leading companies run training like a business by maximizing the effectiveness and efficiency of training. NIIT’s curriculum design and content development offering is led by our specialist content development division.

We worked with market leaders and non-for-profits across the world including: oil and gas (Shell), pharmaceuticals (Sanofi), healthcare (Kaiser), banking and financial services (Bank of America, TIAA, Principal, Discover), insurance (USAA), technology (GE), telecom and manufacturing, not-for-profit (World Food Program, NIIT University), and real estate (Real Estate Council of Ontario [RECO]).

The primary functions of this role include:

• Knowing Bank of America’s style guide standards (copyediting, functionality), brand standards (design), copyright usage and confidential requirements
• Reviewing the coursework that our vendors and stakeholders develop for Bank of America
• Reviewing courses and logging issues for any items that do not adhere to the writing style guide, brand standards and confidentiality so that our developers can correct these items prior to launching the course
• Offering suggestions to improve awkward or unclear writing
• Reviewing line of business developed materials to ensure that they meet the content standards review (CSR) expectations while performing edits to templates and content to assist with completing the development of the review and sending the materials for storage
• Staying up-to-date regarding any style guide additions/edits as well as changes to processes and communicating these updates to our team

About NIIT’s Quality Assurance (QA) as a Service team:

We are a learning vendor for Bank of America. Our QA as a Service team functions as the internal QA team for Bank of America and is the last line of risk defense before a course is sent for publication. This team handles two quality review processes (QA and CSR) and is a source of knowledge for developers by logging issues and coaching employees and vendors. In addition to these reviews, you will review internal bank process documents, communications and conduct audits on vendors and teams with differing review processes. You will also still be invited to NIIT calls, trainings and be available for opportunities to assist internally for NIIT. Outside of general client and learner satisfaction, one of the main metrics is QA, which includes general copyediting as well as our adherence to standards for style, brand, functionality/development, and confidential material.

This role is very specialized to Bank of America because they have very high-quality standards due to the nature of their business, sometimes differing writing style and the risk posed with exposure to confidential or improper documentation.

While there is generally a pretty steady stream of copyediting work to be done, when there is downtime related to project schedules, you may also be asked to assist with other deliverables, such as Quick Reference Guides or maintenance development.

Skill requirements and experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field
• Copyediting and copywriting experience
• Keen attention to detail
• Effective time management and deadlines skills for multiple ongoing projects
• Strong computer skills, including a proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft SharePoint preferred)
• Must be self-motivated to work independently and comfortable working with a team
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
• Candidates will be required to take an editing test

Benefits:
• Medical
• Remote / work from home option
• Potential to become full-time associate

Dan Doody, President and Chief Executive Officer of Doody Enterprises, Inc, will be our keynote speaker. He will touch on journals, books, digital products, and related offerings from the medical publishing world with mention of the various places medical publishing happens. Joining Dan to answer our questions will be three experts, who will discuss the day-to-day life in various roles in medical publishing: Rebecca Luttrell, Mary Steermann, and Nicki Augustyn.

Rebecca Luttrell, ELS, has worked in medical publishing since 1994. She has been a manuscript editor for several medical journals, including the Journal of Infectious Diseases, American Journal of Roentgenology, and JAMA Network Open. Clients have included the Institute of Physics, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and Dartmouth Journal Services (now KnowledgeWorks Global). In addition, she has taught medical editing at the University of Chicago's Graham School. She is a member of the Council of Science Editors and is a board-certified Editor in the Life Sciences.

Mary Steermann has directed publishing operations for the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She currently manages the publication process of ISACA’s learning and professional publication assets. She has been an invited speaker and panelist at the Society for Scholarly Publishing and the Council of Biology Editors.

Nicki Augustyn, Publisher and Senior Vice President, Communications at the American College of Chest Physicians, has held increasingly more senior positions at CHEST since joining the publications team in 2009. This information was shared with us by CWIP member and past president Judith West. Here’s what she had to say:

The offense that this news may inspire can take constructive form in several ways, such as support of the PRO Act, legislation now under consideration by the U.S. Senate to enable freelance authors and writers to bargain collectively with hirers; and a view toward collective bargaining for other publishing freelancers, including editors, proofers, and designers. As a long-time audiobook narrator — whom some might consider a para-publishing professional (despite my 30+ years in print/online publishing) — I benefit from the reality that independent contractors can successfully organize to negotiate reasonable fees with publishers large and small. The below article goes into further detail about McGraw-Hill’s new invoice practice. https://inthesetimes.com/article/mcgraw-hill-freelance-fee-wage-theft &
