Welcome to the team! Gil Thorp comic strip welcomes new author Henry Barajas

For loyal fans everywhere, Gil Thorp is more than a comic strip. It’s the story of sports and vital issues for young people including race matters, teen pregnancy, girlsʼ athletics, dating woes, drug abuse and parental and teacher conflicts. As a result, Gil Thorp has become welcome reading and a close “friend” to many: sports and comics page readers, men and women, boys and girls alike.

The unique storylines of Gil Thorp will have a new voice starting in July — graphic novel author Henry Barajas, a Latinx author based in Los Angeles. Barajas takes over for Neal Rubin, who wrote the strip from 2004 to 2022. Barajas says of following up Rubin: “Gil Thorp is a classic, timeless comic strip. Neal Rubin and Rod Whigham have done an incredible job keeping this series going. Neal has set the bar. I hope to do Gil justice to keep current fans engaged while introducing new readers.”

Barajas is best known for his graphic novels published by Top Cow & Image Comics: “La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo” and “Helm Greycastle”. Barajas wrote the Marvel Comics & SOMOS Healthcare “Avengers #1” issue aimed to inspire the people of New York City to get vaccinated — particularly the Latinx community that was disproportionately impacted by COVID — and a short story for DC Comics’ “Batman: Urban Legends.”

Passion for this classic serial is shared by Barajas: “I grew up reading the paper daily. I would read the front page, check the movie times, and skip to the comics. Writing Gil Thorp is truly a dream come true.”

He will bring sharp dialogue and contemporary storylines that reach a new generation of comics page readers. “I’m passionate when it comes to comic strips — and Gil Thorp holds a special place in my heart. I’m excited to tell the best story while putting the titular character and his loved ones through some tough times. Let’s say Gil Thorp will face 2022 real-world problems.”

Fans can look forward to the new adventures Milford High will encounter as Barajas is teaming up with Rod Whigham, the veteran illustrator of Gil Thorp since 2008. Together they will continue to reach out to readers by dealing with the contemporary concerns of kids and parents, whether on the field, in the classroom or at home.

Barajas’ first comics are available now, for publication starting July 11.

Dick Tracy comic strip to have first female lead artist in 90 years

Square-jawed detective Dick Tracy has been chasing dastardly villains on the comics pages since 1931. Through the years, a line of great artists have drawn the hard-hitting crime fighter: Chester Gould, Rick Fletcher, Dick Locher, Jim Brozman and Joe Staton.

The latest artist, Joe Staton along with the entire Dick Tracy team has brought innovation to the Dick Tracy world, incorporating a bevy of crossovers such as The Green Hornet, The Spirit and a villain named the Jumbler, who gives Jumble puzzles as clues to the police.

Now Staton has passed his two-way wrist radio, Detective Tracy’s trademark yellow trench coat and fedora over to his long-time Dick Tracy teammate, Shelley Pleger.

For the last 10 years, Pleger has inked and lettered Dick Tracy. Now she takes the helm as the first female lead artist Dick Tracy has ever had.

Shelley Pleger is a self-taught cartoonist and illustrator from the Pacific Northwest who has worked on various freelance comics projects, most notably, re-creating classic comics for Disney Gemstone. A digital artist, Shelley has always appreciated the classic brush-inked comics style and strives to bring this quality into her current work for Dick Tracy.

Readers can be assured that the storylines and art that characterize the uniqueness of Dick Tracy will forge ahead. Pleger will continue to work with Mike Curtis, the author of Dick Tracy for the past decade. They will immediately pick up with cross-over themes in Pleger’s first week. The Dick Tracy panels will feature a familiar classic face known to comic strip fans—Daddy Warbucks of Little Orphan Annie.

As Dick Tracy celebrates his 90th anniversary, we can look forward to the new adventures that Pleger and Team Tracy will create. What great characters of the past will come back to the comics pages? What will be the future gadget beyond the two-way wrist radio and who will be the next new villain? The world will just have to watch what unfolds online and in their daily newspaper.

Pleger’s first comics are available now, for publication starting Oct. 25.

Nick Anderson joins TCA Editorial Cartoon Service

Four Pulitzer Prize winners now in TCA’s roster of editorial cartoons.

Pulitzer Prize winner Nick Anderson joins Tribune Content Agency’s Editorial Cartoon Service in January 2021. Anderson joins an esteemed collection of editorial cartoonists that also includes Pulitzer Prize winners David Horsey, Walt Handelsman and Joel Pett.

Anderson is an independent-minded liberal who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message with appeal.

In addition to the Pulitzer, Anderson earned the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award, is a two-time winner of Columbia College’s Fischetti Award, and received the National Press Foundation’s Clifford K. & James T. Berryman Award.

Andersons’ first cartoon for TCA will move on the week of Jan. 3.
