A Tribute to the COMMunity's Educators for World Teachers' Month

All those years of learning to jump the highest hurdles have led me to this never-ending track where I continue to run for my dreams. But remembering all the wisdom that brought me to be here takes me back to the same classroomโ€”the same old place where my mentors raised and trained me.

I can reminisce about the times I would enter the school halls with a panting breath, enter the room with my eyes darting to my table, sit down on the chair with a huff, and see my teachers put on a show only they can put on to be witnessed at the front-seat.

Grasping every spark of knowledge that they ignited for me, I know that sometimes a spark can burn away the pavements that I am trying to chase to find my way into the right paths where they want to lead me. Too high of a hurdle for me, for an apprentice of theirs like me to rise above it, yet there they were, patching me up the wings that I needed to fly over the pits that blocked my path so I could land back on those tracks and not be lost where I am headed.

But now I say to all of you my teachers, I will still stand by you and remember to appreciate you even if the time comes when all the chalk turns into dust, and when all the pens have lost their ink, and when all the pages of the book were read from start to finish.

As I once sat on the tables that faced you and the large board that hung right behind you, now, your burning heart in teaching me has allowed me to sit on the swivel chair that faces the window viewing the bright city that screams my exciting future.

Now, enveloped in the most tender paper and waxed to seal all of my love and appreciation for only you to see and receive, there I sayโ€ฆ

Comm Dept recognizes achievers from AY โ€˜23-โ€™24

In honor of their hard work and achievements, the Communication Department recognized the students who excelled in the previous academic year 2023-2024, at the Adamson University Theater, last Oct. 1.

Ms. Jessia David announced the names of the Top 10 students from each batch, while Communication Department Chairperson Glenn Ace Parungao, together with Ms. Raven Austria, presented the certificates to the achievers.

The students were called from Rank 10 to 1, starting with the former first-year students who are now sophomores, to third-year achievers, who are now senior students.

Cathleen Sarahan (now a third-year student) ranked first among the second-year communication students while Kyla Waje (now a second-year student) was the Top 1 for the first-year batchโ€”now second-year students.

Waje revealed that commitment to organizing while effectively managing time for her studies made her ace her batch, while also acknowledging the effectiveness of active lesson recalls and group studies with friends.

โ€œI try to stay on top of things and to manage my time. I don't have any specific routines but I am big on organizing calendars and such. In terms of studying, active recall works good with me, as well as studying with friends,โ€ she said.

Moreover, Komunikator writers and creatives were also recognized during the assembly, including Arts and Literature Editor Marlito Sarmiento (Rank 1), Editor-in-Chief Hannah Leonardo (8th in Rank), and Creative Directress Leanah Diongzon (Rank 9).

Despite having multiple workloads on their end, Komunikator staffers steadily balanced their academic and extracurricular responsibilities, excelling in both areas and demonstrating remarkable commitment and skill.

One of them is Marlito Sarmiento, the overall Rank 1 for third-year communication students, who are now graduating. He shared that juggling responsibilities and careful time management are key to his achievement.

โ€œI was able to make some sacrifices of my time especially since I had to juggle big responsibilities over the last academic year. I had to make sure that I'm always in the zone and exert effort in all things I do,โ€ he said.

He expressed his strong fulfillment after the awarding, as it became the platform that gave him the opportunity to feature his full potential, which had not yet been seen.

โ€œI feel grateful and fulfilled because I had the chance to showcase my full potential despite being once unseen before by everyone,โ€ he added.

Sarmiento also mentioned the value and impact of his role in Komunikator as a student writer, emphasizing the importance of quality works in writing when in the publication

โ€œWriting for Komunikator has given me relief because creative writing is my way of escape from everything happening in reality. I learned to exert quality in everything I do, which is a principle I exercise when writing for Komunikator,โ€ he said.

Mr. Parungao applauded the achievers and hoped that the awards motivate them to aim for their utmost potential.

โ€œCongratulations on gaining another academic achievement! May this recognition inspire you to continue soaring for the highest possible heights,โ€ he said.

He also ensured that no students would be left behind as he urged those who didnโ€™t receive an award to stay hopeful and keep pushing forward, emphasizing that excellence can be measured in different ways.

โ€œTo those who didnโ€™t receive an award, donโ€™t lose heart. Keep striving and pushing forward. Remember, there are many measures of excellence, not just awards,โ€ he added.

COMMunity applauds rebranding initiatives and future plans for the Communication Department

Communication students have expressed their support for the new initiatives of the department that were bared during its General Assembly on October 1 at the Adamson University Theater.

The theme of this yearโ€™s General Assembly was, โ€œINITI4TE: Collaboration and Media Milestones.โ€

The mother organization for the communication department, the ADU-Communication Society (ADU-ComSoc), presented plans and activities for the current academic year, including the issuance of communication lanyards and merchandise.

Meanwhile, the youngest professional organization, KOMcine, debuted its first-ever projectโ€”an audio-visual presentation with the tagline โ€œGanito Kami sa Comm.โ€

The eventโ€™s success was evident in the enthusiastic reactions of communication students.

Fourth-year Naomi Salditos, one of the performers under the rebranded KOM Artist Circle (KOMAC), expressed her excitement about the departmentโ€™s progress.

"This experience has been so much better compared to last yearโ€™s. Everyone had fun, including our professorsโ€ฆ We are so happy and excited about the rebranding, and we can't wait to showcase the new KOMAC," she shared.

Rohan Ramos, a first-year communication student, appreciated the valuable information shared during the assembly.

โ€œI had a great time, and it broadened our awareness about the grading system. The activities were impressive and engaging, not just filler. As a first-year, I appreciate the opportunities being offered to us,โ€ Ramos said.

Bryle Palmes, also a first-year, had high expectations for the department.

โ€œIt was exciting to see so many upcoming events for us comm students. My favorite part was seeing the talents of our drag queens. As part of the LGBTQIA+ community and a fan of Drag Race PH, it was thrilling,โ€ he said.

Further, Emille Caigas, a senior communication student, added a mix of emotions.

โ€œIโ€™m excited about these developments, but itโ€™s bittersweet since Iโ€™m about to graduate. I hope the future communication students enjoy whatโ€™s ahead for our COMMunity,โ€ she said.

The assembly capped off with closing remarks from Prof. Ailene Ayson, former Chairperson of the Communication Department and current Director of the Office for Institutional Development and External Affairs (IDEA). She reminisced about the department's growth and expressed her hope for the future of the COMMunity.

โ€œI love you so much, COMMunity. Thank you for journeying with me all these eight years,โ€ she said.

Comm Dept Chair Parungao delivers 1st State of the Department Address

In his much-anticipated State of the Department Address (SODA), Communication Department Chairperson Mr. Glenn Parungao outlined the department's rebranding efforts, wherein he introduced all the upcoming projects and plans for the development of the COMMunity, during the General Assembly yesterday, Oct. 1, 2024.

Mr. Parungao introduced the new department logo, designed by communication freshman Jodie Dantes, featuring a shield that symbolizes the strength and resilience of the communication community across various disciplines.

He also announced that the Media Center, which serves as the room housing production courses, will now be renamed as Comm AVR. The term Media Center will now refer to a hub for media relations and resources for both students and faculty.

โ€œWe updated the departmentโ€™s and its recognized student organizations (RSOs)' image and identity to align with current trends and values,โ€ he stated.

Key rebranding changes include:
- Adamson University Communication Society (AdU-CommSoc): formerly Creative Communicators Society (CreaComms)
- Communication Audio-Visual Room (Comm AVR): formerly the Comm Media Center
- KOM Artist Circle (KOMAC): formerly Glee Circle
- Professional Organizations (POs): previously referred to as ad-hocs

The current communication POs, KOMCine, KOMunikator, and Falcon Radio, will remain as is.

Looking ahead, Parungao plans to establish Falcon TV, the communication departmentโ€™s very own digital television station that will broadcast various segments and programs around campus. This will be part of Falcon Studios, which will house all multimedia teams within the department.

Parungao also emphasized the importance of collaboration, announcing the departmentโ€™s involvement in GMA Networkโ€™s "Panata Kontra Fake News" initiative. This partnership, established last month with Adamson University President Fr. Danny Pilario, will see the communication department serve as the primary implementer of this initiative on campus.

โ€œIn the coming weeks, we can look forward to various activities related to this important effort,โ€ Parungao shared.

Several departamental events have been retained, including the annual Media Summit, KomMotion Film Festival, and COMMusical Theater Production. This school year, new events such as DoKOMentaryo, a documentary production, and the SOAR Media Awards, an awarding ceremony, will also be launched.

Soaring Falconsโ€™ dominance cut short in 57-69 heartbreaker against UP

The Adamson University (AdU) Soaring Falcons faced a crushing defeat against the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 57-69, in the UAAP Season 87 Menโ€™s Basketball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena yesterday, September 28.

The Soaring Falcons gained the upper hand in the opening quarter, locking down UP on defense and forcing them into a scoring drought while going on a 15-2 run.

John Calisay knocked down a triple in the final seconds of the first quarter, pushing the lead to 16 points over the Fighting Maroons, 26-9.

AdU built a 22-point cushion early in the second quarter against the Fighting Maroons, leading 31-9, with Matt Erolon draining a three-pointer.

However, UP regained their footing halfway through the period and started cutting into the lead.

Despite the Soaring Falcons racking up 23 perimeter points by halftime compared to UPโ€™s five, the Fighting Maroons made their adjustments and attacked the rim, scoring 16 points in the paint to narrow AdUโ€™s lead to just six points.

Meanwhile, the Adamson Pep Squad took center stage and impressed the crowd during the halftime break with a thrilling performance.

In the third chapter of the game, UP finally broke through AdU's defense, while AdUโ€™s Matthew Montebon and Manu Anabo put forth their best efforts to reclaim their groove.

The Fighting Maroons maintained their dominance over the Falcons during the second half, pushing their lead to 15 points, 65-50, following UPโ€™s Janjan Felicildaโ€™s bucket midway through the fourth quarter.

UP carried their momentum throughout the final quarter, ultimately handing AdU their third defeat of the season, 57-69.

โ€œWell, that was expected naman of UP, na ganyan, for them to dominate us inside. Which they did. Credits to UP for doing that. They know their strengths and they know their advantage,โ€ Coach Nash Racela said while acknowledging unbeaten UP.

Montebon and Calisay each tallied 12 points to lead the scoring for the Soaring Falcons, followed by Erolon contributing eight points and two assists.

Despite the loss, Coach Nash remained optimistic and reflected on the teamโ€™s realizations after their match.

โ€œWell, siguro sa amin, ang realization itโ€™s something that I told the team: what this game is telling us is that number one, we have the tools. We have the tools to compete against the stronger teams. Maybe the tools that we have are not comparable to what they have, but we still could compete,โ€ Coach Nash said.

โ€œKaya lang, we're not yet ready to win against them. So marami pa kaming kailangan ayusin sa team. Once we do that and fix that, then maybe the time will be right for us,โ€ he added.

The Racela-led squad will attempt to regain momentum in their last first round-clash against the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors on October 6, 3:30 p.m., at the same venue.

Victoria brings victory for AdU vs UP; improves to 4-2

Lady Falcons Team Captain Victoria Adeshina finished in double digits to lead the Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons against the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 60-56, in the UAAP Season 87 Women's Basketball at the Mall of Asia Arena, Sept. 28.

It was a slow start in the first quarter for the Lady Falcons, going down, 9-16, but they slowly found their groove at the start of the second quarter. The Lady Falcons started feeding Adeshina under the paint to get her rolling.

AdU went up as much as 14 points in their second quarter run, but with 21.6 seconds left in the clock, Adeshina was seen on the ground grabbing onto her leg indicating she was hurt, and was carried off the court. The first half ended with 36-24, giving AdU a comfortable lead.

The second half was different from the first one. UP was converting baskets, trying to chase AdU's lead. With 6:17 left on the clock, Adeshina checked into the game showing no signs of being hurt.

The Fighting Maroons went on a surge to catch up, 38-33, forcing Coach Ryan Monteclaro to call a timeout. After the timeout, Lady Falcon Cheska Apag immediately impacted the game converting back-to-back layups to put Adamson up, 42-33.

Despite going up with a big margin, UP was still behind AdU's tail and they were showing no signs of letting it go. Adeshina then went to work, scoring inside the paint to go up, 53-45. Adamson and UP were answering baskets on each side as UP tried making a comeback. Fighting Maroon Achrissa Maw then scored a tough basket under the post to cut the lead to two, 58-56.

In the final seconds of the fourth quarter, the Lady Falcons showed their composure and maturity as a team. Under 40 seconds left, they played defense followed by possession to waste precious time off the clock. They took their time and ran all over the court since there was no shot clock left until UP fouled. Cris Padilla went on to the line and knocked down crucial free throws to take the win for Adamson, 60-56.

โ€œToday Iโ€™m very proud of our guards, especially because they were able to handle the pressure well. And, hopefully, we will be able to capitalize on this moving forward,โ€ Head Coach Monteclaro said.

โ€œWith one more game left in the first round. Medyo nagkakaroon ng konting kulay. But then, weโ€™re not done. Weโ€™re gonna continue to strive hard,โ€ he added.

Adeshina finished the game leading in scoring with 18 points and seven rebounds while Apag with 12 points and five steals. Followed by Elaine Etang with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

โ€œIโ€™m so excited with my performance and thanks to my teammates because without them. I canโ€™t have a lot of points. So itโ€™s a collective effort. So all thanks to my teammates,โ€ Adeshina said.

The Lady Falcons will now try to close out the first round with a win as they face the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, Oct.6, at 11:30 A.M.

โ€˜Wake-up Callโ€™: Lady Falcons reflect on defeat against Lady Bulldogs

After a thrilling comeback win against the Blue Eagles, the Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons couldnโ€™t sustain their momentum, falling to the top-seeded National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs, 52-74 in the UAAP Season 87 Womenโ€™s Basketball Tournament, on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

AdU started strong, capitalizing on an early 7-0 run that gave them a one-point edge against NU, 9-8. However, in every offensive surge by the Lady Falcons, the Lady Bulldogs always had an answer that made the first half a point-for-point battle.

Starting the second half, the Lady Bulldogs started to blow the lead after committing a 15-to-2 run that stretched their lead to 19 points, 29-48, setting the tone of the game in their favor.

Lady Falcons head coach Ryan Monteclaro acknowledged the shift of their game during the second half.

โ€œWe went out of the comfort, I mean, we went out of our game plan. And we played their game in the second half. When we had our (game plan), we were actually doing well in the first half,โ€ Coach Ryan said.

โ€œOur game plan was pretty bold and simple. But during the second half, parang sumabay kami sa tempo ng NU. Parang na-outsmart kami. They outsmart us,โ€œ he added.

Despite the loss, Victoria Adeshina displayed an incredible double-double performance, with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Crisnalyn Padilla and Elaine Etang stepped up each contributing 10 big points for the Lady Falcons.

Coach Ryan assures that this game was not a loss for the team but rather a learning experience that the team will bring in future games.

โ€œWith this kind of loss, I think it's a wake-up call. I told the players na this is another wake-up call for us to, you know, to tell ourselves na there's a long way to, there's still a lot of things to work on,โ€ he said.

โ€œThis will not define the team for sure. We're gonna try to get better,โ€ he added.

The Adamson Lady Falcons now have a 3-2 win-loss record and will aim to bounce back on their game against the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons today, Sept. 28 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Tatak AdU 2024: A 'Warm Welcome' for new Falcons from CELA

A fresh batch of Adamsonians received the warm Adamsonian welcome on Thursday, Sept. 26, with the return of Tatak Adamson, a yearly event that serves as an ice breaker for many newcomers adjusting to their university life.

In line with the celebration, various activities took place throughout the day, including booth challenges organized by the Adamson University Student Government (AUSG) officers and committees. These activities engaged students in mini-games, gimmicks, and further energized by performances from homegrown talents like Gravity Skills, Expertise, and Talents (GSET), Adamson University Dance Company - Street (AUDC-STREET), Tinik ng Teatro (TNT), and HIMIG - Musicians of Adamson University.

Trishtan Puente, a freshman from the College of Liberal Arts (CELA), described the event as a โ€œwarm-upโ€ for him and his friends. He noted that it provides a glimpse of the โ€˜Klasmeytโ€™ spirit, saying, "Itโ€™s especially helpful as weโ€™re coming from different places." He appreciated how the ceremony set a positive tone for the start of his college journey.

First-year student Danika Salmero echoed similar sentiments, saying the event helped students feel more comfortable and offered a warm introduction to the Adamson environment.

โ€œWe attend to experience this and para mas maging comfy kaming mga studentsโ€ฆ Nag-enjoy naman kami manood ng mga talented performers,โ€ she said.

Adamsonians were also treated to guest performances, including AdUโ€™s homegrown singer-songwriter Eliza Maturan, with millions of monthly listeners in Spotify, who performed her viral song "Museo."

Meanwhile, rising OPM folk-pop band Magiliw Street culminated with a musical finale and serenaded the crowd with their sing-along performance of their song "Irog."

As colors danced in unison throughout the day, Tatak AdU 2024 left students the 3 Cs of the Vincentian spiritโ€”Competence, Charity, and Character.
