January 25, 2025—Student leaders from the University attended RACE Against Su***de: Gatekeepers’ Training, a toolkit seminar discussing the third leading cause of death among people aged 15-29 years old and students’ role in addressing this dilemma.

Guidance Counselor Christopher Vidal from the College of Architecture shared his expertise, specifically explaining the acronym ‘IS PATH WAS’ to aid participants in identifying warning signs of su***de and potentially connect them to mental health professionals who can assist them more accurately.

‘IS PATH WAS’ are recognizable signs to identify people struggling with their mental health, and these are ideation, substance abuse, purposelessness, anxiety, trapped, hopelessness, withdrawal, anger, recklessness, and mood changes.

Guidance Counselor Ms. Maireen Joy Perez, MA, RGC, from the College of Fine Arts and Design, followed with her talk that shared four steps in managing individuals at risk, which are recognizing the warning signs, assessing the level of risk, convincing the individual to get help, and entrusting the individual to professionals.

“The more na hindi natin pinag-uusapan ito[ng su***de], the more na nagkakaroon ng stigma,” Guidance Counselor Vidal said in his speech as he debunks the myth that conversations surrounding su***de encourages it.

January 24, 2025—The University, led by Electronics Engineering (ECE) Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Edison A. Roxas, PhD, PECE, developed a smart pen capable of detecting neurodevelopmental conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder.

The Intelligence Stroke Utilization Learning Assessment and Testing (iSULAT) smart pen contains sensors that assess stroke patterns, handwriting angles, writing pressure, and grip tightness, which are potential pertinent factors in diagnosing possible neurodevelopmental conditions.

The smart pen initially aimed to diagnose handwriting impairments in early childhood, highlighting the importance of early detection during developmental stages.

The focus on handwriting analysis expanded, serving as a gateway to assess mental conditions.

Funded by the DOST Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), 15 iSULAT smart pens have already been produced and further used in three schools in Luzon, and aimed to be adopted in more provinces.

“With the help of DOST-PCHRD po, nagkaroon po kami ng chance to initially test our theory [that] using a sensor-based pen could actually help us evaluate handwriting,” Assoc. Prof. Roxas said.

Moreover, Occupational Therapist Asst. Prof. Ivan Neil B. Gomez, PhD, from the UST Department of Occupational Therapy approved the use of iSULAT, stating its efficiency in the long run as it can be used in group settings and without the need for an occupational therapist’s direct presence for supervision.

January 21, 2025 — “I see the tour as a net positive effect that will ripple not only to one individual but through the communities they will touch and, in turn — a nation,” Engr. Ralph Norman Malana, MBA, ME2630 (Plant Visit) Course Coordinator, on the impact of plant tours to Thomasian engineers in the making.

The UST Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department took 137 senior students to Japan for its first-ever international plant tour last November 17 to 22, 2024, touring several industries to experience what ‘the best-engineered works look like.’

January 10, 2025 – The Filipino Students in Poland, an organization co-headed by UST Chemical Engineering faculty member Asst. Professor Lorico D.S. Lapitan, Jr., PhD, together with the Philippine Embassy in Warsaw, organized a gathering on November 23, 2024, in Poland.

Students and researchers from the country's Filipino-based community participated in the event that urged them to contribute to the development of their home country, the Philippines, during and after their studies.

"You are one of the ambassadors of the Philippines overseas. Please have that thinking because then, you wouldn't be focusing only on yourself but also interacting with Filipinos here. As you would like to do, engage with your embassy or consulates wherever you are, and help our country develop and progress," Philippine Ambassador to Poland Leah Basinang-Ruiz highlighted in her address.

Speakers expounded on the Balik Scientist Program (BSP), later strengthened by the Republic Act (RA) 11035 or the Balik Scientist Act, which expanded the incentives and benefits for returning scientists—including relocation packages, increased salary, housing or accommodation allowance, insurance coverage, and special funding for research projects.

The event highlighted the importance of giving back to the Philippines and help improve the country's economy, politics, society, values, and culture.
