“IT WILL SIMPLY HAVE TO WAIT A BIT LONGER!" — OBIENA

In an earnest announcement, EJ Obiena has decided to cease his 2024 season after being diagnosed with a fractured L5 vertebra. The injury, which flared up during the Silesia Diamond League, has troubled him throughout the season, forcing him to withdraw from upcoming competitions, including ISTAF Berlin, Zurich Diamond League, and the Diamond League Final.

Obiena's season has been marked by outstanding achievements and unfortunate setbacks. Earning a spot at the Paris 2024, Obiena was the first Filipino athlete to qualify for the prominent sporting event after clearing the 5.82-meter bar in the Wanda Diamond League’s Bauhaus Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 23, 2023.

Competing at the Poznan event a month before the Olympics, Obiena cleared the 5.87 meters for the gold with a bonus meeting and stadium record. Despite the physical limitations, Obiena secured a commendable fourth place at the Paris Olympics 2024.

After the Olympics, the Filipino Pole Vaulter continued to compete, placing joint third in the Lausanne Diamond League and a fifth-place finish in the recently concluded Silesia Diamond League. This performance highlighted his ability to stay on board against the world's best pole vaulters while managing his back issues.

Despite the setback, the current World’s No. 3 Pole Vaulter remains optimistic, expressing determination to recover for the 2025 indoor season.

"I'll be back!" he promised; reassuring supporters of his commitment to the sport and his country.

August 26, 2024 — In his second stint ensuing the Paris Olympics 2024, Filipino Pole Vaulter EJ Obiena finished fifth at the Silesia Diamond League in Poland yesterday (Philippine Time).

Following Obiena’s joint-third finish at the Laussane Diamond League last Thursday, the World’s No. 3 cleared his final successful height of the competition at 5.82 meters and was among the five pole vaulters who attempted the 5.92-meter bar.

Opening the Silesia 2024, Obiena skipped the first height, 5.42 meters, and cleared the next bar, 5.62 meters, on his first attempt. Reserving for the following heights, he skipped to jump the 5.72-meter bar.

Running through the course, the Tondo-born Pole Vaulter unloaded the 5.82 meters on his first attempt with an excellent clearance. However, he failed to clear the 5.92-meter bar in two attempts.

Skipping the last attempt for the previous height and jumping to his personal best at 6.0 meters, he unsuccessfully cleared his lone attempt, ending the competition in fifth place behind Paris 2024 medalists and USA’s KC Lightfoot.

Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis set his new personal best at 6.0 meters, and Paris 2024 Gold Medalist Armand Duplantis again heightened a new world record at 6.26 meters.

Today, we commemorate the lives of our heroes whose relentless love and noble sacrifices gave birth to our free nation.

Let us see them in our fellow Filipinos, in the healthcare workers, street sweepers, waiters, or labor workers, who dedicate each day to the betterment of the country.

“𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙤 𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙙𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧.” — a testament of the late Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Simeon Aquino Jr.’s patriotism for the Philippines. His martyrdom served as a catalyst for change, later inspiring Filipinos to act for the greater good.

Today, let us not forget the sacrifices of Sen. Ninoy, who charted the path that led us away from a self-serving government. A true champion of democracy who gave his life to his homeland. May this day remind government officials to embody these characteristics, always put Filipinos first, and serve faithfully and truthfully.

𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑔 𝑘𝑜 𝑙𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑎 𝑖𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑔 𝑚𝑔𝑎 𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑖 𝑎𝑦 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎 𝑛𝑎 𝑟𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑘𝑜𝑛𝑔 𝑛𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑝𝑎𝑔𝑠𝑎𝑦𝑎 𝑠𝑎 𝑖𝑛𝑦𝑜.” (Salome, 𝘕𝘰𝘭𝘪 𝘔𝘦 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘦, Kabanata X: Elias at Salome)

‘YOU DID GREAT, OUR RUAÑO BOY’

EJ Obiena’s 2024 Paris Olympics journey finishes in fourth place after failing to clear the 5.95-meter bar thrice, a spot away from a podium finish at Stade de France this morning (PH time).

After a nerve-racking qualification round, Obiena cleared his first attempt at 5.50 m in the finals. The world No. 2 Pole Vaulter made a smooth clearance at the next height until his first error at the 5.80-meter bar, leading him to save his remaining attempts by skipping to the 5.85-meter bar. Not only did the 28-year-old athlete clear the proceeding bar, but he also vaulted through the 5.90-meter bar in a single attempt.

Obtaining the same height as Obiena, Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis clinched bronze after having five consecutive first-attempt clearances in the previous heights, though failing to clear the 5.95 m. USA bet Sam Kendricks, however, managed to obtain silver after clearing the mentioned height. Setting a new personal best and world record, world's No. 1 Pole Vaulter Armand Duplantis of Sweden claimed the gold medal after successfully clearing the 6.25-meter bar.

With margins away from a podium finish, Obiena raised the bar and improved his last performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he placed 11th. This Olympic run marks his palpable growth and remarkable influence in Philippine athletics.
