READ: ALBEE BREEZES THROUGH DEBATE, RIVAL A NO SHOW

Bacolod mayoralty bet Albee Benitez is the clear winner in the online townhall debate organized by UP Law Alumni Association Negros Occidental Chapter (UPLAA-NO) today.

While his rival declined to participate in the debate, Benitez showed Bacolodnons that he is ready to serve them with no excuses.

“I thank UPLAA-NO and their partners for initiating this debate. I welcome any forum, in whatever platform and format, where I could present my vision and highlight my plans for Bacolod City,” Benitez said.

The Benitez camp also added that rivals’ camp already had previous communication with the organizers months before the debate and they were actually surprised with the rival’s withdrawal.

“Our camp were the last to know about the platform, format and the mechanics. But still, we decided to push through because we value Bacolodnons and we owe them the education and information about our intention and platforms,” Atty. Andrei Norman Saril, Benitez legal adviser, said.

Bacolod mayoralty bet Albee Benitez answered the questions coming from different sectors confidently, and demonstrated wide knowledge and presented clear solutions to existing problems in Bacolod City.

“I only wish I had more time to answer the many questions of the sectors, and elaborate on my plans to address their needs and concerns,” Benitez said.

The organizers, UPLAA-NO, thanked Albee Benitez for his time and effort in making it to the townhall debate.

They hope that it can help voters make well- informed judgment based on critical issues when they exercise their right to vote on election day.

BING'S GAMBIT FALLS FLAT ON HIS FACE
by Eugene Y. Adiong

Adviser's of the incumbent mayor miscalculated the reaction of the organizers of the virtual debate on January 15.

They were expecting that the group behind the debate- the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the UP Diliman College of Law Negros Occidental Alumni Association and USLS will easily bow down to the mayor's whims and caprices by giving in to his late demands for a change of rules and format.

Their "red herring" fallacy fell flat on their faces as they did not grant his demands and the event will go on as scheduled via a town hall meeting virtual debate.

As a debate practitioner and advocate since high school, I find it funny the incumbent's demands for a change of the rules. It's like changing the rules in the middle of the basketball game because the calls of the referee is not favoring your team!

Bing is wriggling his way out of the debate by suggesting a format revision in his favor. His purpose? To evade the real issues that will reveal his mismanagement of the city government especially the city's coffers.

In debate and rhetorics that is considered a fallacious argument specifically "red herring fallacy' which is defined as something that misleads or distracts from a relevant or important question. He wants the public to focus on his rule demands not on the issues to be debated on.

During the debate in Bombo Radyo- Bacolod in 2019 with his opponent Atty. Jocelle Batapa, he did not ask her about policy or advocacy. Instead he questioned her why she was wearing a Captain Marvel costume!

The mayor is also demanding that his opponent should not bring any notes or documents. That is a ridiculous demand! As a lawyer he should know that one should argue based on facts and if necessary present documents to prove an argument. An argument should not be based on mere hearsay or general statements.

What should he be afraid of if his opponent bring documents? If he is not guilty of all the mismanagement and misgovernance he will not cower in fear! What documents is he afraid of in the first place. Bring all the trophies and awards that he can to defend himself!

He was already informed as early as October last year of the format and rules of the debate. His demands for a rule change when it is barely a few more days to go is a total disregard if not an insult to the organizers.

A pre- debate conference should have been demanded as early as last year not a few days before the date of the debate. Again they miscalculated the organizers. They are professionals. Lawyers at who won't bow down to one candidate.

Bing wants a face-to-face debate so he could bring his JOs and supporters who are ordered to jeer and boo his opponents as often as possible as if the debate are like the arguments at the public plaza. Ask Atty. Batapa what happened to her in front of Bombo Radyo when she went down after the debate. Or what did the mayor's supporters did during the debate hosted by the Trinity Church.

Here's a curious question though? Why did the mayor boycott the debate in RMN- DYHB? What was he afraid of?

His statement that he will face anyone as long as as it is within his terms is misleading. It is a cover up to the real fact that he is really scared to face his opponent former congressman Albee Benitez in whatever forum where the terms are not in his favor.

If he does not show up in the debate, he will be judged as a coward. If he does, he should prepare for the worst.

Like in a chess match, Bing baited his king but the bait was not taken and he is now in a corner where any move he makes will mean mate and ultimate defeat.

I rest my case!

P.S. It doesn't help that his minion Atty. John Orola, who is running against Gov. B**g Lacson is following th3 same script by demanding the same terms and conditions.

Huli ka!
