#𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥: 𝐌𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐝

Blood dripped from shots fired in five
Clutching on my side, now atoning for my sin,
Falling down, feeling the earthy weeds touch my skin
Jagged breaths and weary eyes, trying to stay alive

Footsteps surround me as they walk
Their shadows and gaze treat me like livestock
The tributes and capitol await my death
Craving for my downfall until my last breath

A call of fate I once thought,
For my district’s pride is on the line
“I volunteer as tribute,” thinking I would shine,
But instead, I am met with a bullet that was shot

My blood still flows, but my body grows cold
Death slowly creeps; he claims me in his hold
As I close my eyes for one last time,
I suddenly feel warmth and the smell of grime

With my hazy vision, I slowly open my eyes
A man in red, bathed in the sun’s light, tries
With ripped cloth wrapped around my side, he fights,
But the blood keeps flowing, despite all his might

As I met his fiery gaze, wanting him to stop
The cannon shots fire with its ear-piping blow
With weak hands, I grasp his hand to make him stop
He turns, his blue bell eyes not wanting to let go

A furious man with revenge in his fiery glare
He lets go of my hand and strides to the arena's flare
I can only glance at the sky, whispering a prayer
For this is not my battle, nor mine to bear

In the capitol’s game, only he can claim the crown
I wish him strength with his battle, destiny’s frown
As I lay on the earthy weeds, awaiting the end of my strife,
Longing for the solace, the release from this life

USG PRESIDENT MESADA DEFINES FIRST SEMESTER PLANS AT SOA

Executive President Brian Paul Mesada discussed the already implemented and prospective programs and initiatives of the University Student Government - Kita Lasalista administration for school year 2024-2025 to attending college council members, class officers, and club officers at the University of St. La Salle Student Senate-organized State of the Organization Address, held at the Miguel Lobby August 30.

Mesada outlined the numerous activities the USG - Kita Lasalista handled during the first months of sitting in office, including their recruitment week, the “Out and About” Pride activity, the “Called to Rescue” advocacy tour, Higher Education Unit Day as part of this year’s Handumanan Week festivities, the summerly University Splash, and the year-opening University HEU Orientation Program, among others.

Mesada followed by outlining the planned efforts of this year’s USG flagship programs: KitaHub, Animo Vision, and La Salle Inter-link, along with mentions of the upcoming Lasallian Week, with plans to include USLS sister school, St. Joseph School La Salle, in the celebration, as well as brief descriptions of each department’s general plans and initiatives, including the return of the Animo Vote in time for the mid-year elections; the Sectoral Action Group for Empowered Students, with added persons-with-disabilities and academic scholars sectors; and the Student Materials Support Services, all from previous terms.

After last week’s Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC), Mesada also expressed the USG’s collective legislative plans for the school year, including a revised Officers Performance Assessment Bill; a Magna Carta for Publications; the Samahang Lasalyano Bill, aiming to institutionalize the SL; and the USG Transition Bill.

“Let us reflect on the strides we have made and the challenges that lie ahead,” said Hon. Mesada when concluding his speech. “Our progress is a testament to the dedication and resilience of every Lasalista that comprises the University Student Government. [...] As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to our shared goals, ensuring that our actions today build a stronger, more prosperous future for all.”

#𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥: 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨

What does it take to be a “hero”?
Apparently, not much—you just need to have super strength, invisibility, and even the power of flight; all in the name of being a savior.
Then, ta-da! Congratulations–you’re a hero!

But are you, though?

“Do good, be good, and have powers.”
The catch is that none of us, not even the wealthiest, have super abilities. Hoping for tight-spandex-wearing people to swoop in and come to your aid is foolish–nothing more than child’s play. Fiction has always been a major factor in coloring imaginations and, in this case, creating heroes.

However, as the passage of time continues to walk in a steady stream, a hero isn’t someone who flies or beats up bad guys—it’s the people you share an ordinary life with.

It’s the ones who suffer tremendously in silence,
the ones who smile at you even when they’re hurt.
They’re the ones who help you cross the street,
who give you rides back and forth, who come to your aid when you fall off your bike, and who help you solve a difficult mathematical problem.

They don’t have any life-changing abilities, for they walk with us through the same streets and live a normal life like anybody else. It doesn’t take much to be a hero, does it?

Because if being a hero means you have saved lives, wouldn’t that mean you are a hero to others as they are a hero to you?

CAS-DAP HIGHLIGHTS WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

The College of Arts and Sciences-Department of Advocacy Programs celebrated the World Humanitarian Day with “Heroes Among Us: The Humanitarian Hub with a series of activities held at the USLS Forum Stage from August 19-20.

This year’s World Humanitarian Day event aimed to elevate awareness about youth-led humanitarian efforts in Bacolod and inspire greater student engagement in these causes. The activities designed to educate and engage involve touring participants in the humanitarian hub and exploring various local socio-civic projects. Following the tours, a quiz bee tested the participants' knowledge of the topics covered. A space in the Forum also featured a freedom wall, an interactive space for attendees to express their personal commitments to humanitarian causes.

“It is important in the sense that hopefully, more students will be engaging in more humanitarian works and be driven by volunteerism after being touched by the initiatives of fellow youth advocates,” shared CAS Council Vice Governor, Marjoe Toquillo.

The event concluded with a silent prayer rally, serving as a moving highlight where students gathered in reflective solidarity to emphasize the importance of ongoing humanitarian efforts and promoting social responsibility and volunteerism.

CULMINATING EVENT WRAPS UP COMM SUMMER CLASS ELECTIVES 2024

On July 13th 2024, upcoming BA Communication sophomores gathered at the Gallaga Theater for a culminating activity which awarded elective standouts as the summer term draws to an end.

Students had the opportunity to tell their stories through the mediums of screenwriting, editing, and film production in this year's summer electives.

Among the highlights for this year’s culmination graduation are the students who were awarded for their outstandingly directed and meticulously edited short films as a way to showcase what they have learned throughout the summer term.

For the Film Production class, "Alpas” directed by Nean Alegario won first place followed by “A Wake Up Call” by Gabriel de la Rosa and “LOML: Love of My Life” by Joy Gayacan.

"Honestly, it feels surreal because I wasn't expecting to win Best Film, kay I know gid nga all films na produce namon deserves the title Best Film. I will forever be grateful for the people behind Alpas. Thank you! For the last time, this is... Alpas." said Director Nean when questioned how she felt about winning the said award.

Meanwhile, for the Film Editing class with outputs themed “Time”, Mark Andrei Castronuevo was awarded for his winning piece entitled “Filipino Time.”

When asked how Castronuevo felt after winning, he said, “Being this year's best in editing is such an honor and a blessing. I chose editing class as one of my subjects this summer even though it's out of my radar. I challenged myself to explore this field and maybe I will grow some love to it. That's why, it feels so rewarding to receive this award.”

Overall, the summer electives culmination graduation not only recognizes the students' talents, but it also serves as a fitting end to their first academic year in the BA Communication course in the midst of their preparations for their second year.

: Unspoken Vows

let me pick up the bouquet of tulips i pre-ordered on 9th street
along with the cookies and cream and pistachio ice cream from the supermarket.
i will walk proudly holding these gifts for you—
let me love you out loud and proud

let me surprise you with your favorite food shaped like a heart,
all placed on a blanket in the middle of the field where we face the horizon with warm hearts.
i will look at you while you look at the view—
let me hope to spend every morning with you

let me think of you in every love song that’s blasting from every speaker today,
alongside the short poems of love i hear people say.
i will write my own, with thoughts occupied by you—
let me make you my muse in everything that i do

let me say the words that i’ve been suppressing:
i love you—
you’re the object of my desires and the subject of my prayers
and if i run, i run right back to your arms
because all roads lead me back to you

i love you—
every day without doubt
it will always be you above everything else.

: Drought

Re-reading the phases of grief,
lingering into the dept of my soul,
I have found you,
close to the center of my ventricles
Living a cut as red as blood,
flowing freely to each of my vessels
as if they were part of my system
they were as red as my blood,
the reason why I thought it was nothing
until my body rejects it.

Re-reading the phases of grief
I saw you there, sitting,
laughing with your supposed to be old friends, as if nothing changed and no one left.
Meanwhile, the cut you made,
ripped my vessels one by one
until there's no vessels to rip
anger visited me yet I refuse to hold such rage for I know why

I understand,

I understood,

and that ripped me more
more than anger can do

And at the third time
of re-reading the phases of grief,
I found myself
lying near the letters I have written
to all the letters I failed to explain,
to all my words that you are not meant to hear, to the desires I failed to spoke

I thought I was asleep.
A pen rests into my palm, with a scattered ink that looks exactly as my blood
and when I touched her, no blood is left sinking her veins even her vessels stops to accept and release the toxins, her system shuts down

she died. that day.

the cut you left. that killed her.

but—for you—it was just a small cut.
you thought it was just a small cut.
