Inflation softened for the third straight month in December despite the typical surge in demand during the Holiday season, thanks to slower increases in utility costs and prices of some key food items.

Inflation—as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI)— eased to 3.9 percent year-on-year in the final month of 2023, from 4.1 percent in November, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported Friday.

The latest reading fell within the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) forecast range for last month of 3.6 percent to 4.4 percent. It was also the slowest print since February 2022.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) refuted an earlier claim that the minimum fare in jeepneys could increase up to ₱50 under the government’s public utility vehicle modernization program.

The department made the statement in response to a claim by think tank IBON Foundation that the program could precipitate a major fare hike.

“Fare increase petitions are always subject to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) en banc deliberation,” the DOTr said in a statement Thursday. “It will also require NEDA opinion as to the inflationary effect of any increase as well as giving due consideration to affordability of the commuting public.”

Corn farmers can expect improved income with two newly registered high-yielding varieties of the coarse grain made available for distribution and commercial cultivation, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA).

These are the CVRC Glut 21-16 — commonly known as Deko Glut — which was developed by DA-DA-Cagayan Valley Research Center, and Tupi 1 WIT (also called South Cotabato Improved Tiniguib) that was developed by DA-Soccsksargen.

Also, the two high-yielding corn variants were developed under the DA’s Corn Germplasm Utilization through Advanced Research and Development (CGUARD) program.

Russia pounded Ukraine's two biggest cities on Tuesday in a new wave of heavy air strikes that killed at least five civilians and prompted calls for the West to quickly provide more military assistance.

Ukraine's Interior Ministry said 135 people had been injured in the latest missile and drone attacks, including 61 in and around Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city in the northeast and 17 in and around the capital, Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said rescue operations continued into the late evening as the assaults also caused widespread damage and hit power supplies.

The story of the vocation of the prophet Samuel is very interesting in the sense that he at first did not realize God was calling him. God had to call him three times, before he realized it was not his earthly master, Eli, who called him, but God himself.
