ππ¬ A sweet step forward in public health πβ¨
In the year following the imposition of the UKβs Soft Drinks Industry Levy, also known as the βsugar taxβ, daily sugar intake saw a significant reductionβ5 grams in children and 11 grams in adults. Notably, sugar derived from soft drinks alone accounted for over half of this reduction. Despite this positive trend, daily energy intake from free sugars remains above the World Health Organisationβs recommended levels.
This analysis, based on 11 years of survey data, highlights the importance of policy interventions in promoting healthier dietary habits. While the decline in sugar consumption from soft drinks is encouraging, it is crucial to continue our efforts to meet and sustain the recommended daily sugar intake.
The data also suggests that the overall daily energy intake from free sugars did not change significantly, indicating that individuals did not substitute sugary foods and drinks for other sources of dietary sugar. This points to a genuine shift in consumption patterns, influenced by public health initiatives and greater awareness.
