World Breastfeeding Week is coming up. I know this can be a really difficult time if you had a difficult breastfeeding experience.

So ahead of this week I decided to put together a website with lots of articles, videos and social media posts I've ever created on breastfeeding grief - free to access. You can learn more or signpost to some of the most common feelings, causes and ideas for getting more support.

Time for my now annual post about damaged book offers 🥸
I've got a not so small pile of books that have slightly damaged covers or mysterious goings on (like a copy of let's talk about the first year with the inside cover page missing... ripped out... no memory of doing this 🧐😆).
Others have small creases or slight rips or other mild damage to the covers. Some have dodgy looking signatures or even are written out to someone with the wrong name because I managed to get distracted by something mid sentence or my pen ran out and I couldn't find one in the same colour and I hate sending out anything that's not perfect when it leaves me 😬
Anyway, the text of these is all unaffected but they are building up in a teetering pile on my desk that looks like it's about to give way and cause damage to something (or give me a bizarre injury) so I've popped them on my website at some bargain prices.
Just noticed my copy of Maternal Journal has worked its way in there. Not for sale (or indeed damaged) but was showing it to someone in a meeting and now it's an integral part of book tower structure. Great book though btw Maternal Journal

This week I have re-certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant for the third time. We have to do this every 5 years. Back in 2009 after completing over 90 hours of lactation education and 2500 breastfeeding counselling hours I sat the exam to gain this credential. I then recertified by demonstrating that I had completed the 75 hours of education and additional practice hours required to keep up to date in 2014. I reset the exam in 2019 as the rule then was that after 10 years you had to resit it. This third time I have been able to do via the 75 hours of education route again. The minimum number of practice hours required to recertification is 250 hours in the last 5 years. I entered 3600 hours which is a conservative estimate of the actual hours I have done over the last 5 years! Gaining and retaining this qualification takes effort, commitment and money as the fees and education costs run into several thousands yet anyone can call themselves a ‘lactation consultant’. Please don’t assume that because a person uses the title or you think they are a lactation consultant that they are. Ask them and look them up on the public registry to confirm that they have the IBCLC credential.
