Happy Hilda Tloubatla Day!
We would like to wish Hilda Tloubatla, our mother, icon and leader of Mahotella Queens, a happy birthday.
She is one of the few (South) African living legends still active, recording and performing live.
Mam’ Hilda started singing professionally in 1964, after her immediate arrival in Johannesburg and auditioning for Gallo/Rupert Bopape for an all-girl group that would become a world touring, evergreen ensemble, backed by Makgona Tsohle Band for many years.
Mahotella Queens turns 60 this year, performing with two new members, Amanda Nkosi and Nonkululeko Maseko.
Previous members of the Queens have included Nobeshuthu Mbadu, Ethel Mngomezulu, Julliet Mazamisa and Mildred Mangxola, the other surviving member.
