Tharaka people live on the Eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya. The community occupies two districts namely Tharaka South and North. They are about 140,000 people, living in Tharaka region and about 10% of them live in towns while the rest live in the villages where the life is considered better. Tharaka people belong to Ameru ethnic group and speak a Bantu language called Kitharaka, a sub dialect of Meru.

They enslaved the Tsonga and many of them fled into the northern regions of Mozambique, parts of Zimbabwe and in Limpopo Province in South Africa. They believe that plants, animals, and trees have souls. They also believe in fairies, witches, and forest monsters. There are a variety of religious beliefs involving ancestors, higher gods, or abosom, and 'Nyame', the Supreme Being of Ashanti.
