The Jacana Literary Foundation (JLF) is awarded a $35 000 grant from US-based Hawthornden Foundation
The day that Brian, a musician from the West Rand in Johannesburg, walked through our front door was a day like every other publishing day in this town. Except, of course, that once Brian, in his burgundy zoot suit, accessorised with a dicky bow and a pair of smoky fashion glasses, took out a tiny speaker from his pocket, cleared his throat and composed himself to sing something heâd written over the Covid period on Jacana Media and the power of reading African books, we knew that 31 August 2023 would be a day unlike any other publishing day. Brianâs visit was auspicious.
Later that day, we received this email:
'I am delighted to inform you that following a recent meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hawthornden Foundation, your organization, Jacana Literary Foundation, has been identified to receive a grant from the Foundation [âŚ] for general support of the Jacana Literary Foundation.'
We thought it was some kind of hoax, but checked and discovered that Hawthornden Foundation is a private charitable foundation supporting contemporary writers and the literary arts. Established by Drue Heinz, the noted philanthropist and patron of the arts, the Foundation is named after Hawthornden Castle in Midlothian, Scotland, where an international residential residency programme provides month-long retreats for creative writers from all disciplines to work in peaceful surroundings. Hawthornden also supports a second residential programme at Casa Ecco, on Lake Como in Italy, the site of âConversazioniâ, private conferences attended by many celebrated writers and others in the arts, and a retreat for invited authors to complete a literary work in progress. This year, Hawthornden Foundation will open a new non-residential retreat â Hawthornden Brooklyn in New York.
