WIN! WIN! WIN! A case of De Krans Premium Moscato Perlé wines!

The De Krans Premium White Moscato Perlé has delicious fruit flavours of muscat, litchi, apricots and hints of honey and exotic spice, the Premium Red Moscato Perlé has 15 per cent Pinotage added to give it the red colour, which changes the fruit profile considerably to flavours of berries, litchi, soft prunes and muscat, with strawberries, blackcurrants and exotic spice on the palate, while the De Krans Premium Rosé Moscato Perlé dazzles with a beautiful, pink blush colour – a result of a touch of Pinotage added to the Muscadel and Hanepoot.

It’s September, and that means celebrations – a new season, the blessing of rain and bountiful blooms in the garden!

This month, we celebrate our heritage through food, travel, locally made creations and beautiful people in our community starting with KZN tourism queen Briony Smith, who shares her favourite local outdoor escapes and eateries. We also get to know female touch rugby pro Mengka Singh, share a magnificent tribute to Michaelhouse and learn about managing pain from occupational therapist and author Helen Roome.

There’s colourful beauty; we plate up tradition with a few tasty twists; naturally rock nature with locals who’re spreading the love through useful and artful accents; and take a family-friendly trip to the berg. And let’s not forget our bumper feature focussing on kids, with helpful tips for parents.

For the competition fans, we’ve two cases of moscato to give away as well as a two-night stay in a five-bed chalet at .eco.camp

28/08/2024

We’re jam addicts and have just discovered Rhodes' new Apricot and Peach flavour that comes in a 290g cup with resealable lid, for convenience and freshness. We enjoyed it so much, that we got another and made pudding with it … Cape Brandy Pudding to be exact. It’s the sister to malva and deliciously warming for family dinner occasions.

It serves 6-8 and you’ll need:

For the pudding: 250 g pitted dates, chopped; 5 ml (1 tsp) bicarbonate of soda; 250 ml (1 cup) boiling water; 125 g (125 ml) butter, softened; 100 g (125 ml) sugar; 100g (65 ml) Rhodes Quality Apricot and Peach Jam; 2 eggs; 240 g (2 cups) cake flour; 5 ml (1 tsp) baking powder; 1 ml (¼ tsp) salt; 100 g walnuts, lightly roasted and chopped

For the sauce: 250 g sugar; 15 ml (1 Tbsp) butter; 190 ml (¾ cup) water; 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla essence; a pinch salt; 125 ml (½ cup) brandy or substitute with Rhodes Quality Apple 100% Fruit Juice;

To serve: whipped cream

What to do: Place the chopped dates in a bowl. Add the bicarbonate of soda and pour over the boiling water. Allow to soak and cool. Cream the butter, sugar and Rhodes Quality Apricot and Peach Jam until creamy. Add the eggs one at a time and mix well. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Beat into the butter. Pour in the soaked dates with the water and beat well. Stir in the nuts. Spoon the batter into a baking dish that has been sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake the pudding in an oven that has been preheated to 180° for 40 minutes or until firm to the touch. To make the sauce, heat the sugar, butter and water over medium heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Stir in the vanilla, salt and brandy (or Rhodes Quality Apple 100% Fruit Juice) and once the sauce is warmed through remove from the heat. Pour the brandy syrup over the hot pudding straight from the oven. Serve hot, with whipped cream

Newly crowned Miss South Africa 2024, Mia le Roux is a keen cook and a dab hand in the kitchen! One of her favourite dishes to make for friends and family is Thai Green Chicken Curry. It’s a Jamie Oliver recipe she’s adapted to include ingredients more readily available in South Africa and, trust us, it’s a real winner.

Mia Le Roux’s Thai Green Chicken Curry

You’ll need: 750g skinless chicken breasts; 2 tbsp olive oil; 400g button mushrooms, sliced; 400g coconut milk; 1 cup of chicken stock; 200g sugar snap peas; ½ bunch fresh basil; 1 red chilli, chopped; 1 lime

For the curry paste: 4 garlic cloves; 2 onions; 5cm piece of ginger; Zest and juice of 1 lemon; 4 green chillies, chopped; 1 tsp ground cumin; ½ bunch of fresh coriander; 2 tbs fish sauce

What to do: To make the curry paste, peel, roughly chop and place the garlic, onions and ginger into a food processor.
Add the lemon zest and squeeze the juice into the processor. Trim and add the chillies, cumin and half the coriander.
Blitz until finely chopped then add the fish sauce and blitz again.
Slice the chicken into bite-size pieces. Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat, add the chicken and cook for 5 to 7 minutes or until just turning golden. Remove and transfer to a plate. Return the pan to a medium heat, add the mushrooms and cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until golden.
Transfer to a plate using a slotted spoon. Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the Thai green paste for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Pour in the coconut milk and the chicken stock.
Turn the heat up and gently bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes or until slightly reduced.
Stir in the chicken and mushrooms, reduce the heat to low and cook for a further 5 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through, adding the sugar snap peas for the final 2 minutes.
Taste and if needed, season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Roughly chop and stir through the basil leaves and remaining coriander and scatter over the chopped red chilli.
Serve with steamed rice and a wedge of lime.

25/08/2024

When garden guru’s talk about sustainable gardening, which is this year’s top trend, what they are talking about are water wise, heat tolerant plants that contribute to a healthy environment by attracting butterflies, bees and other beneficial garden insects.

Perennial flowers also tick all the boxes as low maintenance plants that together with shrubs and trees provide the basic framework of the garden.

Most perennials survive drought, even during the first few weeks of their growth and, once in place, will happily grow for three or four years in ordinary garden soil before they need to be lifted and divided. They are also excellent in containers for the patio and as accents or focal points in the garden.

For growing tips and to see the new varieties of perennials to look out for in Spring, read the full article here - https://getitmagazine.co.za/highway-berea/blog/2024/08/23/perennial-charm/

We’ve a colour crush … loving Ice Blue
On the runways one shade filtered through as a key player. Ice blue is the soft and fresh hue seen across new season silhouettes, from knitwear to tailoring and more. Refined and fresh, we found these two must-have pieces at Witchery:

The 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗡𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗞𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 is a standout piece. Crafted from a fine, ribbed knit, this dress fits close to the body, creating an eye-catching fit-and-flare silhouette. The turtle neck and sleeveless cut adds a touch of sophistication, while the wool, cashmere and cotton blend makes it perfect for late Winter, early Spring weather.
𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Pair this dress with knee-high boots and a long coat for a chic winter look. Add a statement belt to accentuate your silhouette and elevate the look.

The ultimate layering piece, this 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗡𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗞𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗽 is perfect under all your winter layers. It fits true to size and features a cropped length, a folded turtle neckline, and a clean-finish crepe knit. Its straight hem and sleeveless cut offer a contemporary appeal.
𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Wear this top with high-waisted trousers or a midi skirt for a balanced silhouette. Layer with a tailored blazer for a polished office look or a leather jacket for a more edgy vibe.

Find both at Witchery at Woolworths.

We are obsessed with chai lattes ... and have yet to find one to make at home that lives up to those we order from our fave coffee shops. Until now.

Say a warm and spicy welcome to the new Tetley Chai Lattes. Chai - which is the Hindi word for tea, has been enjoyed for thousands of years, with its roots in the fabric of Indian tea culture. Sweet. Spicy. Creamy.

It’s indulgence in a mug ... and these new ones come in original and fragrant vanilla flavours. Easy for on-the-run treats, simply empty the sachet’s contents into a mug, fill up with boiling water or milk (or a combo of the two) and you’re good to go.

In your local supermarkets and Takealot now.

A handful of reads...
In 1951, unhappiness is hardly grounds for divorce. Except at the divorce ranches of Reno, Nevada. Here women live together for six weeks - the state’s only divorce requirement - before they earn their freedom. Six weeks of living it up at the casino and flirting with cowboys. The Divorcées by Rowan Beaird ... all female friendship, desire, and freedom. Manilla Press

The Blue Sisters. A strait-laced lawyer. A boxer-turned-bouncer. A Paris model. And then the fourth sister ... who’s unexpected death leaves the three reeling. Grief, addiction, heartbreak all need to be addressed when they reunite in New York to stop the sale of their family home. Coco Mellors’ novel is a beautifully written story of true sisterhood - the misunderstandings, the squabbles, the resentment and the love. HarperCollins UK

The Manor. It’s meant to be a retreat for the very wealthy ... the kind of place where guests are given crystals to wear in a velvet pouch, and who attend solstice suppers in the forest. Where the owner rubs clary sage onto her pulse points and halos herself with sacred mist. That would be just before she has five shots of vodka (it’s a clean spirit!) to wash down the pills kept inside her old Ayurvedic tea tin. It’s also a place that is, on opening night, on fire. Secrets from more decade before have come back to haunt ... and it’s going to end in murder. Lucy Foley’s The Midnight Feast is just fabulous! HarperCollins

A book tour along the Amalfi Coast, rabid fans, literary rivals, ex-flames, a crazed stalker ... suspicions are flying faster than paperbacks off a bestseller shelf ... and someone is trying to get away with murder. Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies is Catherine Mack’s fabulously darkly funny read. Macmillan

Kevin Kwan’s Lies and Weddings is the marvellously wicked story of Rufus, a future earl and former supermodel, who’s drowning in debt and who’s only hope, according to his mum, is to attend his sister’s wedding and seduce a woman with money. But the exposure of a secret tryst sees the family plans - and their reputation - go up in flames, leaving Rufus in a bit of a quandary. Glitz, glamour, money, s*x and murder. Such fun! Sunny succulents
Their water wise design has resulted in many intriguing leaf shapes and textures, that fit right into contemporary home décor.

What’s more they are difficult to kill because they need less water and nutrients than traditional plants. Some of the hardiest succulents can survive without water for months. They are the ideal plant for the ‘lock up and go lifestyle’ or for absentminded plant parents.

Learn what the best ways are to incorporate succulents in your home, like making a cactus bowl and choosing the correct type of succulents here - https://getitmagazine.co.za/highway-berea/blog/2024/08/16/sunny-succulents/
