"Aerial Combat" These two were squabbling over a feeder all day yesterday. For such a little bird they sure can be aggressive towards each other. It will all end once the main migration gets here. Then there will be too many to try and defend their little territories. Ganado, Texas.

A Glimpse of Heaven at Caddo Lake.

A Glimpse of Heaven
On this morning I traveled a section of water that was new to me. Hoping to be inspired with a new perspective on a familiar subject. The end results did not disappoint. Although these water connect with those that I have spent so much time on, this felt like a totally new adventure. It really is amazing how approaching the same subject from a different angle makes all the difference in the world.

When the aurora is so strong, it turns everything green!

Around this time of the night during the 8/11-12 aurora storm, the aurora was so strong it was seen as far south as Texas in the United States! The aurora was so bright that details were easily able to be seen in the foreground, as if it was day time!

NEVER ARGUE WITH A HUMMINGBIRD(From the Greg Hall archives🌞.)

NEVER ARGUE WITH A HUMMINGBIRD
(From the Greg Hall archives🌞.)

NEVER ARGUE WITH A HUMMINGBIRD
(From the Greg Hall archives🌞.)

Getting up early has its benefits. One of which is that it allows me time outside before the Texas summer-heat begins its daily assault.

I like to be in position on my back porch, coffee in hand, to watch the eastern sun announce the new day.

It is my time to reflect and recharge. I can engage the ever spiraling world a little later…but for a time…I need this peace.

Although to be honest, on this particular morning, my mind has diverted from tranquility to troubles.

I made the mistake of checking an e-mail or two while the coffee was brewing. Those electronic messages of endless and unsolvable issues had infiltrated and overtaken my morning joy.

“Bzzzzz….bzzzz….squeak…squeak…”.

Yes. THE WORLD has found me early today and has grasped ahold of my mind…and the talons are in deep.

Is it ever going to rain again? What about inflation? Is my lawn infested with Army worms?!

“Squeak…squeak…squeak…bzzzz…”.

I wonder how the kids are doing? I have got to get in better shape. Property taxes…no no no…property taxes!

How will I ever…

“Bzzzz…bzzzz….bzzzz…SQUEAK!”

What is that irritating noise!?!

Oh…there it is…a little female hummingbird hovering at the flower-shaped feeder hanging from the eave.

She seems to have deviated from her myopic mission of drinking man-made nectar just to chastise me.

What does she know anyway? Her life is all sweetness and sunshine…while mine is rife with responsibilities.

Be quiet little bird and leave me to my troubles.

“Squeak….bzzz…bzzz…bzzz…squeak!”

Are you kidding? Do you really want to argue with me?

I was answered with a defiant “bzzz”…and to make matters worse…“Squeaker’s” back up arrived.

A noisy band of barn swallows swooped and wove their way through the open porch.

Then a cooing pair of mourning dove lit a few feet away.

They began browsing through the grass below a pedestal feeder, looking for fallen safflower seeds.

Perched above them, a beautiful red Cardinal…exhibiting terrible table manners…scattered seed down to the ground feeders below.

“Bzzzz….bzzzz…squeak…”.

Oh…you again.

Sorry “Squeaker”…I did not mean to be rude. In fact, I think I’m starting to get your point.

After all, who am I to debate you…a flying miracle?

On your tiny wings of lace, you not only carry smiles to me, but you intrigue and challenge me…to the point of reminding me that I am not the one in control.

“Squeaker”…given ten million years, I could never have imagined you…much less designed you.

Yet here you are…flying perfectly in place…a symbol of a Creator much greater than I.

So, why do I worry so much? You look to be doing pretty good and I doubt you have a single penny in your 401k.

Inexplicably aloft, you model all of the answers I needed to see this morning.

Feeling suddenly unburdened, I lifted my cup of coffee high in the air to acknowledge my tiny messenger.

Thank you “Squeaker”.

Placing my coffee back on to the patio table, I reached down into my pocket, pulled my cell phone out, and powered it off.

My arms crossed behind my head, I leaned back as far as I could in my chair and let the rising sun shine upon my face.

PEACE.

Just like my diminutive sugar-loving sage…I too had been uniquely created…not to succumb to a life of “problems”…but to live one of “purpose”.

How can I argue with that?

“Bzzz…”.

Please have a good day.

From the Photographer: Definitely one of the more unusual motel breakfast buffets that I've been to - the Breakfast Bus at the Desert Air Motel in Sanderson, Texas.

If you're thinking of visiting the area, one way is via train. Amtrak's Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle stop here six times each week. If you choose to disembark, you'd be one just a handful of passengers to do so. The Sanderson station is the least used in the entire Amtrak system, with only 247 passengers choosing to get on or off here in all of 2023. Photo Credit: Robbie Green Photography

Before 2006, experts thought that roseate spoonbills only lived to be about 7 years old. However, that year experts in the Florida Keys discovered a bird that had been first banded in 1990, making it 16 years old

From the Photographer: Milky Way arch over Caprock Canyon in Texas.

Thankfully the final result gives justice to the amount of work behind this photo!
This is my first Milky Way panorama, images (282 of them!) stitched together to create a wider field of view and being able to capture the full arch of the Milky Way.
Taking this photo was the whole purpose of the trip.; however, the whole weekend was overcast and rainy, giving me no chance to capture the stars. I was supposed to leave Sunday, but the forecast looked promising for that night so I stayed; at 10PM the sky was still completely covered in clouds… I decided to go to bed and set an alarm every hour… every hour I would wake up and stick my head out of the van and check the sky… midnight, 1 AM, 2 AM…. My sleepy self was loosing all hopes… 3 AM…. clear sky!
As usual, my brain tried to convince me to stay in bed but I dragged myself out, drove to the trailhead, hiked up the steep mile leading to the overview. The view from above was just incredible, being able to see with the naked eye the full Milky Way arch was an experience I’ll never forget.
Storm clouds approached from the NW as I started shooting, thankfully they went around and disappeared on the horizon.
I stayed until sunrise and made my way down.
I’m glad I stayed.

Nerdy stuff:
4 row panorama (3 rows for the sky, 1 row for the foreground, blue hour blend)
9 positions for each row, each position is 10 shots stacked for noise reduction
Each position is overlapped by 50%
Total of 282 images
Total shooting time 1 hour and 30 minutes
Final image is 148 megapixels!
