Carah Christensen is a local sidewalk chalk artist who creates for the moment in order to inspire others to live in the moment with their loved ones.

Carah started doodling from a young age and credits her artist grandmother as her constant inspiration. After her son was born, she took an eight year hiatus from art before she found herself in a college art class.

“My incredible professor created a welcome and open space and gave guidance without judgment,” she said. “I learned that soft pastels exist and focused on one of my favorite things: sidewalk chalk.”

That’s when Carah started creating giant sidewalk pieces outside the campus community studio in her free time. Unlike a permanent work of art, Carah compares her work to making memories.

“I couldn’t afford to give my son a lot of things, so I started making unforgettable memories instead of collecting a mountain of stuff,” she said. “That’s the nature of sidewalk chalk art and it’s what I love about it: it feels good to be creating something in the moment and having fun.”

Carah’s chosen medium has also forced her to accept her mistakes and instead, go with the flow.

“I’ve had huge pieces get rained on less than 4 hours after doing them,” she said “I love being able to create random, sometimes short moments of fun and beauty.”

As she plans to expand into doing commissions for more events, parties, and holidays, Carah’s sidewalk art may be coming to a neighborhood near you. See more of Carah’s work on her Instagram page and reach out for a commissioned piece!

Elizabeth Eich is a local artist and senior at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, majoring in Studio Art and minoring in Art History and Psychology. Her work is focused on self-portraits, which capture her different personal struggles.

“It’s a healing journey that helps me with self love,” Elizabeth said. “Every self portrait is an intimate experience of my healing journey as a person and an artist.”

After getting her undergraduate degree, Elizabeth plans to work toward a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy. She hopes to become an Art Therapist one day.

For now, Elizabeth continues to create her art and focuses on enjoying the process, one step at a time.

“I love getting an idea, getting to the “ugly” phase, and getting to when it all comes together in the end,” Elizabeth said. “It’s a rollercoaster of feelings and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

See more of Elizabeth’s art on her Instagram page .eich.art and keep an eye out for her work around town!

More from the incredible performance of “To be Loved” by Madeline Reddel, with string arrangement by Mee-Hwa Roche, on the latest episode of The Green Room 🥦

Capturing the set-up of each episode, to be used as an intro, is something that we wanted to incorporate into the show from the beginning. To showcase all the different types of artists that come together to make this series possible.

From the musicians themselves, to the video & audio production, behind the scenes photography & the amazing artwork by Natori Pittman, showcasing all of the talent that our community has to offer through this show is a very fulfilling experience.

Another element that carries throughout each episode are the handwritten name & song titles by each individual artist. This title effect is a great way to show each artists unique style while still keeping the branding of the show consistent.

We’re loving how this series has turned out & can’t wait to share the other incredible artists who have submitted to be a part of this season. A huge thank you as always to our own Simon Clark for filming this episode & to Roger Slatten for capturing the audio.

Deb Hart is a Lincoln artist who lives in a world of “pastel whimsy,” creating girls and creatures by drawing with pastels.

Deb’s purpose in creating her art is to spread happiness and messages of gratitude.

“Illustrating my DrawnLove ‘loves’ is my meditation,” she said. “It is my time when my mind quiets and I feel relaxed and at peace.”

She refers to her sketchbook as her “visual journal,” and hopes to continue creating art both for her own peace of mind to share a moment of peace with others.

Meliz Laugen is a watercolor and acrylic painter in Omaha, who considers herself “obsessed with color.” She’s been painting since she was three years old.

“I like a sense of whimsy and magic in my work,” Meliz said. “I’m happiest when I’m creating.”

Meliz’s favorite things to paint are flowers, cityscapes, and umbrellas to name a few. She is new to Omaha from Los Angeles and New York City, and finds new inspiration in her local landscape, as well as meeting other local artists.

“I love sharing ideas and techniques,” she said. “It’s fun to paint with other artist friends.”

Gavin Marlin is a Des Moines artist who works with carving mediums like bone, stone, and jade. All the bone Gavin uses is ethically sourced.

Gavin has been running his small business for almost a decade out of his apartment and hopes to one day work full-time as a carver.

Considering himself a “sponge for learning,” Gavin finds his greatest artistic joy in the fine details that make a piece more complex the longer you look at it.

“My work is inspired by the artists who taught me whakairo across the Pacific Islands,” he said. “In my long journey of learning how to master the materials I work with, I’ve realized just how precious and beautiful animals are.”

Through his artistic journey, Gavin has aimed to make his art a reflection of that sentiment, considering all the materials he works with as sacred.

He also credits the community around him as a wealth of knowledge.

“The community for the traditional arts of the Pacific Islands are always happy to explain the meanings of designs and teach me new techniques,” Gavin said.
