In today's post for #WomensHistoryMonth you'll hear an excerpt from the essay "The Ambivalent Activist" by Lauren Groff, from the book The Fight of the Century.
The essay talks about Norma McCorvey, better known as "Jane Roe", the plaintiff in the landmark American legal case Roe v. Wade in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that individual state laws banning abortion were unconstitutional.
#Voiceover by @annaleighashford, recorded at CityVox.

This week for #WomensHistoryMonth we are acknowledging Elizabeth Cady Stanton, original suffragette and a leader of the women's rights movement in the U.S.
Stanton was the main force behind the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, the first convention to be called for the sole purpose of discussing women's rights, and was the primary author of its "Declaration of Sentiments". Here you can listen to a clip of the piece, voiced by @faithsandberg. Her controversial demand for women's right to vote quickly became a central tenet of the women's movement.
She and Susan B. Anthony established the Women's Loyal National League to campaign for the abolition of slavery. 20 years later, Stanton became the first president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She died in 1902.

March is Women's History Month where we honor the women who changed history.
Today we are celebrating Sojourner Truth, an American abolitionist and women's rights activist.
Truth was born into slavery and escaped to freedom in 1826. By the early 1830s, she became a charismatic speaker in religious revivals. She went on to give speechs about the evil of slavery, temperance, and women's rights, the most famous of which was "Ain't I a Woman", where she challenged prevailing notions of racial and gender inferiority and inequality. You can hear a clip of that speech we recorded above.
In 2009, a memorial bust of Truth was unveiled in Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol Visitor's Center. She is the first African American woman to have a statue in the Capitol building.

In observance of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are taking a look back at an educational project we recorded for @pearsoneltusa of a sampling of Maya Angelou's "Mom & Me & Mom", voiced by the very talented @KenyaBrome.
Maya Angelou was an internationally esteemed American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist best known for her series of seven autobiographies. As a respected spokesperson for Black people and culture, her work has been used in schools and universities worldwide. She performed her poetry and gave lectures until her death in 2014.
