For as long as I can remember, Iāve been a fan of and collected Music, primarily Heavy Metal (of ALL genres)...Throughout the years, Iāve amassed an amazing collection of CDās and Vinyl, including a lot of rare and out of print pieces, as well as MANY bands that I like to call āUnder The Radarā bands, bands that DEFINITELY deserved or deserve MORE attention than they have received. Growing up in Nebraska made collecting and keeping up with the new styles, trends and bands in Metal VERY difficult! Not to mention, we did not have any āMetalā Radio stations and this was pre-Internet, so there was no streaming worldwide, so if I wanted to listen to a station that played anything Heavy, it was typically the NuMetal stuff, Metallica or Alt Metal.
As I got older and the internet became such a driving force for ALL Metalheads that wanted to discover or collect new music, it became almost TOO easy to get ahold of or just LISTEN to practically anything you would want, BUT it seemed that too many people were still satisfied with listening to those same āRadio Friendlyā bands and as the years continued, it was so frustrating to me that so many good bands were releasing music through smaller Underground labels and didnāt get the opportunity to get the same hype as bands that, quite honestly, were watered down, sugar coated and weak in comparison to these lesser known bands. (Packaged Aggression I like to call it) The main frustration was because with the internet, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, etc having SO MUCH material, alot of these great bands that Iād listened to from the early 80ās up to now remained unknown and hardly mentioned...when they did get mentioned on a post on a Metal group, they would get sent WAY DOWN the news feed because of the literally HUNDREDS of posts about Mainstream Metal bands, so even then, these bands got pushed to the side.
Itās no secret to anyone that knows me that I have always wanted to have my own radio show, an avenue to play these songs from bands Iāve accumulated over the last 40+ years to be able to get them heard by more people and build the awareness of some of these bands up. Last year, I finally got my chance as a friend of mine hosted a weekly Metal show called Heresy on KRNU (The University Of NE-Lincolnās College Radio Station) and he asked me on to the program a total of 3 times and I was given the chance to set up an hour worth of music to play and an opportunity to announce the songs and talk with him about the bands in between. It came very natural to me and as I thought Iād never have the opportunity to host my OWN Metal Show, I created āThe Metal Inquisitionā, which was a YouTube Metal Show that I posted on my YouTube Channel, The Kruse Kollection. After doing a total of 20 episodes as well as some interactive shows with musicians, fans and other collectors (āMetals Best...By Metals Bestā), I began to get discouraged as I saw my videos only get around 100 hits and it seemed ONCE AGAIN that people were not interested in learning about all these bands that I wanted to share.
Then last Fall, I attended a Business Expo for work and saw a booth for KZUM, our local Public Radio Station that has VOLUNTEERS host their own radio shows and also assist the station in raising funds to keep the station running. So I went over and spoke with the person manning the booth and found out all I had to do was send in an online āapplicationā and if they liked what they saw and what the theme of your show was about, after you got some training, would be able to host your own Radio Show. She then asked me what the topic of my show was and when I told her I wanted to do a Metal show, she was extremely excited as the last long running Metal show on the station had shut down just that year and they were really missing that type of show on their roster of shows. Furthermore, when I went in to orientate, I met the Station Manager and Program Director, who also had the same reaction about the show...they couldnāt wait to get me on the air...SO, once my training is completed in April, āThe Metal Manifestoā will hit the airwaves at KZUM (89.3) every Thursday Night/Friday Morning from Midnight to 2am (CST) as well as being available to stream live online at http://us1.internet-radio.com:8628/ (it will be able to be streamed after the airing for the next two weeks on http://radiofreeamerica.com)...
