On this date in 1938, Orson Welles and his merry band of audio producers and performers caught the country off-guard with their "as it's happening" night before Halloween adaptation of "The War Of The Worlds." Historians would later dispute just how frenzied the audience reaction was at the time, but the broadcast certainly got attention, far exceeding Welles and his crew's expectations.
