A recent addition to the Archive for Welsh America, this issue of Trysorfa Y Plant (The Children’s Treasury), a Welsh-language Sunday school magazine, dated April 1899, was donated by the Peniel Welsh Church near Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In many ways it embodies the popular conception of Welsh identity at the time: national symbols including the dragon and the arms of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd are intertwined with Christian iconography in the service of a Nonconformist, Welsh-speaking Wales.

To learn more about Welsh society and politics in the late nineteenth century, please join us on Zoom this Sunday, February 23 at 1 pm Central Time as historian Huw Webber discusses the topic and considers why Wales failed to become an independent nation during a period of intense nationalism in Europe.
