Remembering Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee 🕊️

We remember our final interview with her, filmed just 7 months ago.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee was still fighting for a purpose — to uplift communities, to champion equality, and to ensure that every voice was heard in the corridors of power.

was present at the , where GOP voices weighed in on the swirling speculation surrounding President Biden’s potential withdrawal from the upcoming re-election race. At 81 years old this year, concerns about Biden’s age and health have amplified discussions within both parties.

Former President Obama, alongside other Democratic figures, has offered insights into this debate. Sources indicate Obama has advised Biden to thoroughly evaluate the physical and mental demands of another term. Stressing the importance of effective leadership, Obama has urged Biden to consider the broader implications for the nation and their party.

Within Biden’s inner circle, including First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, there’s a growing sentiment emphasizing a balanced approach to the toll another campaign and presidency could exact on his health and well-being.

Despite Biden’s assertions of intent to run again, doubts linger among voters and within his own party. Recent polling reveals that 58% of voters, including 36% of Democrats, harbor reservations about his ability to sustain another term. Should Biden opt out, potential successors like Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are being discussed as alternatives.

Meanwhile, the RNC has underscored the urgency of a clear succession plan to maintain stability and effective leadership. GOP leaders and activists have emphasized readiness, citing economic uncertainties and Biden’s declining approval ratings—now below 40% due to concerns over finances, inflation, and foreign policy challenges.

As the 2024 election cycle rapidly approaches, the Democratic Party faces the pressing need to solidify its strategy moving forward.

In a tragic incident that has sparked outrage and demands for accountability, 23-year-old, Senior Airman Roger Fortson, was shot to death by a Florida deputy sheriff who was reportedly responding to a service call in a Fort Walton Beach home. Allegations suggest that law enforcement entered the wrong home, prompting calls for a thorough investigation.

On May 3rd, while responding to a disturbance call at Fortson’s home, the deputy claimed he shot Fortson as an act of self-defense when they saw him armed with a gun. Fortson was rushed to the hospital and died from his injuries. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office confirms that the unidentified deputy involved has been put on administrative leave while the investigation is being conducted.

Senior Airman Roger Fortson was on a Facetime call with an unidentified woman when the incident occurred. According to her account, Fortson was alone in his apartment when he heard a knock at the door, but received no response when he asked who was there. Minutes later, Fortson heard a louder knock but saw no one through the peephole. Concerned, he retrieved his legally owned gun. As he returned, deputies burst in, saw his weapon, and shot him six times. The woman also reported that Fortson, on the ground and shot, said, “I can’t breathe.”

As the community mourns the loss of Senior Airman Roger Fortson, a distinguished Special Missions Aviator with the 4th Special Operations Squadron, questions loom over the circumstances of his tragic death. Fortson, who began his active-duty service on November 19, 2019, was a vital member of the AC-130J Ghostrider gunship aircrew.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Fortson’s family, has called for transparency in the investigation surrounding his death. Crump emphasized the urgent need for the immediate release of body camera footage to the family and the public. will keep you updated as this story develops...

A group of Black DHL workers recently won an $8.7 million settlement after a 14-year lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, DHL’s U.S. arm allegedly assigned undesirable delivery routes and heavier lifting tasks to Black employees while giving their white counterparts lighter duties and preferred routes. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) asserted that when white drivers raised concerns about routes in high-crime neighborhoods, these routes were often reassigned to Black employees, exposing them to heightened risks and potentially dangerous situations. The commission claimed that Black workers were disproportionately assigned to move large and heavy packages, while their white colleagues primarily handled letter sorting tasks. These discriminatory practices created a climate of inequality within the workplace.

Karla Gilbride, General Counsel of the EEOC, stated: “If an employer honors the requests of white workers to avoid certain parts of a city that are perceived as dangerous, but orders Black workers to continue working in those areas despite their concerns, the employer is telling Black workers that their lives and their safety concerns are valued less than the lives and concerns of their white coworkers.”

This settlement represents the largest announced by the EEOC since March 2022, when Activision Blizzard agreed to pay $18 million to settle a lawsuit alleging s*x discrimination and tolerating s*xual harassment. The $8.7 million settlement in the DHL case will benefit 83 Black workers involved in the lawsuit, 20 of whom are represented by private counsel.

In addition to the monetary compensation, DHL has agreed to undergo a comprehensive review of its internal complaint procedures and policies by former EEOC commissioner Leslie Silverman. Silverman will also monitor the company’s compliance with the settlement terms for four years, ensuring accountability and progress in rectifying discriminatory practices.

This week, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed ten new crime and public safety measures, including a controversial law that requires mandatory cash bail for an additional 30 crimes, including 18 misdemeanors.

Under the legislation, some offenses now requiring cash bail include:
• Reckless stunt driving
• Promoting or organizing drag races
• Purchase, possession, manufacture, distribution, or sale of controlled substances or ma*****na
• Theft
• Rioting
• Inciting to riot
• Unlawful assembly

The new law, known as Senate Bill 63, has sparked intense debates among criminal justice reform advocates, who are concerned that the bill will lead to overcrowding in jails, an issue that some counties are already battling.

Advocates of the bill believe this measure will guarantee defendants attend their court hearings and decrease the likelihood of them committing these crimes again. However, critics argue that it will disproportionately target low-income individuals, creating a justice system based on wealth.

In a Prison Policy Initiative Report published last month, 32% of people booked in jail have a reported annual income below $10K, while 43% of people detained pretrial are Black. In Georgia, Black people are incarcerated at a rate 2.7 times higher than white people.

Fulton County Jail, a site that reported at least ten deaths in 2023, has recently been under fire for an increase in violence, overcrowding, excessive force, unsanitary conditions, and misuse of funds. Fulton County also has gained national notoriety for holding Young Thug in custody for 725 days and counting, as he is tangled up in one of the longest trials in the state of Georgia history.

In response to Governor Kemp signing the bill into law, The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia (ACLU) issued a statement Thursday saying, “SB 63 is cruel, costly, and counterproductive. Research shows that sweeping people into incarceration only increases crime and taxpayer costs. Yet, Georgia locks up a higher percentage of its people than any other state in the country.”

A former restaurant employee, 28-year-old Othello Holmes, is facing a slew of charges, including placing his ge****ls in food items and possession of child po*******hy. Deputies arrested Holmes after the manager of the Houston restaurant Kulture provided deputies with incriminating videos.
Holmes faces five counts of possession of child po*******hy and indecent assault. The restaurant manager reported Holmes to the authorities after he was caught on surveillance camera inserting his ge****ls into a jar of jelly. Holmes, a former cook at the restaurant, reportedly confessed, stating: “He had a s*xual urge, however, he stopped himself before he ejaculated.” According to , Holmes admitted to having frequent s*xual urges and a history of s*xual offenses, stating that he needs help with his problem.
On April 15, Holmes gave investigators consent for a forensic analysis of his cellphone, and officials discovered over 100 photos and videos of child po*******hy. The age range of the individuals depicted in the videos varied from infants to teenagers. The videos also showed Holmes performing s*xual acts and in*******se with the children. In one video, Holmes is seen fondling his ge****ls in front of a child who appears to be younger than six years old.
The phone records also showed a conversation between Holmes and a person under the username “Princess” on social media. Holmes says to Princess, “Super pervy yesterday. I wish I had access to kids,” to which Princess replies, “I wish you did too (cry face emoji).” It is unclear how old the user he was speaking with is.
Holmes was booked at the Harris County Jail on a $500,000 bond for the child po*******hy cases. His is due back in court on June 6.

The 17-year-old Kansas City teen who was shot in the head after accidentally ringing the wrong doorbell last year is now suing the man responsible.

Ralph Yarl’s family is filing a lawsuit against Andrew Lester following an incident on April 13, 2023, where Yarl was shot in the head and arm. Yarl mistakenly went to Lester’s residence to pick up his two younger brothers. Lester, 85, subsequently called the police, stating he shot Yarl because he was “scared to death.”

The lawsuit filed today stated that Lester was careless in shooting Yarl and that the Highland Acres Homes Association should have been aware of Lester’s “propensity for violence, access to dangerous weapons and racial animus.” The lawsuit also states that Lester never gave a verbal warning to Yarl before the shooting. Both Lester and the homeowner’s association are named as defendants.
Yarl was not a threat.

The family is seeking unspecified compensation, court costs, and legal fees.

Lester, who is currently out on bond, pleaded not guilty to criminal charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. His trial is set to begin later this year on October 7.

The father and aunt of a two-year-old girl, Neveah Reed, have been arrested and charged with her death after she accidentally ingested fentanyl-laced pills.
On February 18th, police in Mansfield, Texas, received a call regarding an unresponsive two-year-old child.

Upon arrival, they found Neveah in critical condition and administered CPR before rushing her to the hospital. Despite being on life support for ten days, Neveah passed away.

Investigations revealed that Neveah’s father, Michael Reed, and her aunt, Jamie Popovic, delayed calling 911 for two hours after finding the toddler unconscious. Instead of seeking immediate help, Michael, 26, allegedly resorted to online searches on inducing vomiting and even attempted to administer Naloxone via DoorDash, a drug used to counteract overdose effects.

“A simple 911 call and [Neveah] would be here,” Stephanie Wallace, Neveah’s mother, said.
During a search of the residence, police discovered a fentanyl-laced blue Oxycodone pill near where Popovic claimed to have found Nevaeh. Additionally, the home exhibited signs of drug activity, including the smell of ma*****na, cash, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded firearm.
Reed faces charges of knowingly causing serious injury to a child, while Popovic is indicted on child endangerment and abandonment charges.
Wallace says she plans to start a nonprofit organization to draw attention to the issue of children overdosing on fentanyl due to parental negligence.
The Black community has been hit the hardest by drug overdose, according to JAMA, a peer-reviewed medical journal. The death rate of fentanyl overdose in the Black community increased 44% between 2020 and 2022.

Revolt News presents Town on Fire, a 5 part limited series about the long history of economic terrorism inflicted on Black America. We begin with the infamous origins of Georgia’s Lake Lanier.

Oscarville, GA (Lake Lanier)
Due to decades of targeted white mob violence, Black residents in the thriving community of Oscarville, Georgia were either murdered or driven out of their homes. Later, the state and federal government flooded the so-called “abandoned” land when creating Lake Lanier, the largest and most popular man made lake in the state. Today Lake Lanier brings in millions of visitors and over $5 billion dollars annually to the state; yet, no descendents of Oscarville have been compensated, while the true story of their once great town was nearly lost to history. A study conducted by economist Dr. Hamilton and his colleagues estimated that the loss millions of acres of land once owned by Blacks is worth $326 billion today.
