Today is International Women’s Day, and while I could celebrate the countless incredible women in my community, today—I choose me.
As Black women, we are often conditioned to celebrate, support, and uplift everyone else while putting ourselves last. We give endlessly, love deeply, and pour from cups that are rarely refilled. But today, I am breaking that cycle. Today, I offer myself my flowers.
I have walked through welfare, depression, and homelessness, facing struggles that could have broken me. But in my darkest moments, I found purpose. I discovered strength I didn’t know I had, turned pain into power, and transformed obstacles into opportunities. My journey wasn’t just about survival—it was about becoming the woman I was always meant to be.
So today, I honor me—the woman who never gave up, the woman who continues to pour into others, the woman who deserves her flowers now.
Happy International Women’s Day to me—and to every Black woman who has been told to shrink, to give without receiving, to celebrate others while ignoring herself. Sis, you deserve your flowers too.
