Alert ๐Ÿšจ.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) in South Sudan has officially declared its reluctance to partake in the upcoming elections scheduled for December, citing the perceived inadequacies of the electoral process, which they argue contravene the 2018 Revitalized Conflict Settlement Agreement. Despite the imminent conclusion of the transitional government period, concerns persist among peace parties regarding the unfulfilled prerequisites for conducting elections and establishing a conducive civil and political environment.

Awit Nathaniel, Vice President of SPLM-IO and First Deputy Speaker of the Transitional Parliament, emphasized that the Movement's Political Bureau reached a consensus that elections could only proceed if fundamental criteria for a peaceful, transparent, democratic, and credible process are met. These requirements encompass security arrangements, constitutional development, population census, judicial reforms, refugee repatriation, internally displaced persons resettlement, transitional justice mechanisms, hybrid court establishment, peace agreement publication, and the reconstitution of committees and independent institutions.

Expressing reservations about the approaching end of the peace agreement roadmap, Awit Nathaniel called for constructive dialogue among the parties involved to chart a clear course for the December elections. The SPLM-IO firmly asserted its refusal to participate in elections that violate the peace agreement, emphasizing their commitment to the revitalized dispute settlement accord.

Furthermore, the SPLM-IO warned of withdrawal from the agreement in writing before guarantors, donors, and IGAD if elections proceed without fulfilling the stipulated preconditions. SPLM-IO leader Alfred Fotoyo underscored the potential resurgence of conflict if armed groups are not adequately retrained, graduated, and unified under a national army before the elections.
