Feeling a little bit of melancholy about the previous event? Well, if thatโ€™s the caseโ€”let's all look back and take a moment to gaze upon and appreciate the joyful shots that our photographers took during the Tamaraw Ignite this academic year! โœจ

Amidst the unexpected downpours and sudden location changes, the FEUHS community still enthusiastically welcomed one more day of the event yesterday, August 27, 2024. Tamaraws also had the opportunity to introduce themselves about different organizations during their hunt, and participated in different booth activities.

It appeared that this year's event was a success with their newfound friendships, experiences, and memories. Indeed, the green and gold community was guaranteed to be enveloped by happiness.

Happy Women's Equality Day! ๐Ÿ’—๐ŸŽ€

Today, weโ€™re celebrating all the incredible women whoโ€™ve fought, and are still fighting, for equality. Even when the world said "no," women kept going, breaking barriers and making new opportunities for everyone.

But the journey isnโ€™t over yet. Womenโ€™s Equality Day reminds us that while weโ€™ve made a lot of progress, thereโ€™s still work to be done. So, letโ€™s keep moving forward! May we all build and join communities that support women and make society a fair playing field for all. Together, we can make it happen.

In honor of all the amazing women out thereโ€”yesterday, today, and tomorrow! Youโ€™re making a difference every day.

Honoring Our Heroes, Inspiring Our Future

Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Melchora Aquino, Apolinario Mabini, and Gabriela Silang โ€” they are only some of the many historical heroes who played key roles in the Philippine Revolution. To commemorate our heroes, every last Monday of August is dedicated to the people who fought for our independence and shaped our history. This day also marks the 'Cry of Pugad Lawin' in August 1896, one of the most pivotal moments in Philippine history โ€“ as it ignited Philippine revolution.

While we are able to collectively celebrate our history and culture, let us not forget to also express our gratitude to the unsung heroes of today including healthcare workers, teachers, essential workers, and first responders. Amidst our countries present challenges such as economic inequality, poverty, health care inaccessibility, these heroes continue to fight for our rights and serve the people of the country with eagerness and dedication for the betterment of the nation and its future.

The National Heroesโ€™ Day is not only a time for solemn remembrance but also a celebration of the Filipino spirit. We can take this time to reflect on our nation's journey, appreciate the sacrifices of our heroes whether named or not, and solidify our commitment to creating a better future for generations to come. We must honor their legacy and live our lives with compassion and a sense of purpose.

FEATURE | The Mark Left for Freedom

"The Filipino is worth dying for." โ€“ Ninoy Aquino

41 years ago, Ninoy Aquino left a sorrowful yet powerful mark on the Filipinos that motivated a peaceful revolution to reclaim the people's power.

Ninoy Aquino started creating his mark as he embarked on his long journey in politics. With his wits and experience as appointed representative by former President Ramon Magsaysay, Aquino took his seat in his hometown's local government as a mayor to governor from 1959 until 1963. At the age of 35, he became the youngest elected senator under the Liberal Party in 1967.

During Aquino's term, his voice became a strong critic of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the priorities of his presidency. This includes squandering money on infrastructures such as The San Juanico Bridge and Cultural Center Project in what Aquino claimed as a โ€œmonument of shameโ€ for the Filipinos who are drowning in debt and poverty. Aquino also commented on the militarization of the government and how criticizing the former administration must be free. However, his own dedication to the homeland became the reason for his imprisonment after Martial Law was proclaimed in 1972. Later on, with an approval from the government, Aquino flew overseas to Texas to treat his medical condition after suffering from a heart attack in his prison cell.

He finally sealed his mark in 1983 by flying back to the country and participating in the upcoming 1984 elections against Ferdinand Marcos Sr. His arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, formerly Manila International Airport, is welcomed with yellow ribbons to signify as the golden ray of hope. Yet, this hope was short-lived, as he was assassinated while leaving the airport grounds.

His determination and passion in serving his fellow countrymen until his end is the mark that touched the hearts and ignited the fire of our fellow countrymen. After he died, millions of Filipinos marched at his funeral and his ideas remained in the minds of the people. For the next three years, his sacrifices and dream for the country lingered and united the opposition, becoming the driving force to free the motherland from the shackles of a two decade-long dictatorship, and restoring the democracy that the country has long forgotten.

In the present times, wherein criticizing the administration gathers unwarranted reactions in social media, the importance of acknowledging the importance and relevance of Ninoy Aquino Day is apparent. Because this day is not only about commemorating his death but celebrating the sacrifices he made to fight for the Filipino's freedom to speak and criticize while still living peacefully.

Ninoy Aquino Day is celebrated annually during August 21 to commemorate his death and sacrifice for the Filipinos. However, following Proclamation No. 665, Ninoy Aquino Day has been moved to August 23, 2024 to promote the country's domestic tourism during the 4-days long weekend.

EDITORIAL | Stepping on the Brakes

The bustling streets of metropolitan areas that echo with the hum of engines fell silent yet again. The three-day transport strike, announced by the public transportation group Manibela, started on August 14 after President Ferdinand โ€œBongbongโ€ Marcos Jr. declared his backing for the advancement of Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program. As the governmentโ€™s push for modernization stands for progress, critics argue: โ€œIs this progress for whom?โ€ Itโ€™s crucial for us to consider the voices of those who are most affectedโ€”our jeepney drivers and operators who are being left behind as the number of modernized jeepneys increases.

In line with this, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes downplayed the perceived impact of the mobilization of public utility jeepneys (PUJs) that are not yet consolidated by the governmentโ€™s modernization program. This gives importance to thousands of jeepney and UV Express drivers who depend on their traditional vehicle to make a living due to the modernization program threatening their livelihood.

The plan to phase out these iconic jeepneys and replace them with more expensive modern versions or e-jeeps, is not just a fight about vehicles, but more about fairness; about making sure that the individuals who have been the backbone of our public transport system are not overlooked. E-jeeps costing up to PHP 2.8 million are beyond the financial reach of typical drivers and operators. Moreover, there will also be ongoing costs for maintenance and other operational expenses, limited access for affordable financing and loans, and insufficient government subsidies to help drivers transition to modern jeepneys.

These drivers are speaking through the lens of monetary and physical struggleโ€”facing the reality of mounting financial burdens and physical toll of their work. In summary, they do not earn enough to keep up with such action towards modernization.

The strike's timing could be critical, with public transport being a lifeline for many and with commuters facing delays. However, we should not view this merely as an inconvenience as these temporary difficulties are essential for achieving long-term benefits of both drivers and daily transit users.

Letโ€™s keep in mind that the strike is more than just a temporary disruption. It is for us to reflect and to know that the progress for modernization must be comprehensive and just. Issues within the transport sector that have been ongoing for years cannot be fixed by simply replacing traditional vehicles with modernized ones. The government must develop long-term solutions and systemic reforms that benefit the citizens and other aspects within our country.

As we face strike once more, our strength lies in our ability to stand as a nation. By showing understanding and supporting the plight of PUJ drivers, we can contribute to a more equitable community. In the end, it is our shared spirit that will carry us forward, as we strive together for a future where progress genuinely benefits everyone.

Tamaraw Broadcasting Network will forever treasure the presence of its seniors who have grown to achieve beyond their roles.

Cohort 7 of the Tamaraw Broadcasting Network bids farewell along with the seniors who are now graduating. Without their efforts, ideas, and influence, TamCast wouldn't have come a long way. Those who were once the newly welcomed members are now passing their legacy to the newest cohort, sharing their knowledge and experience from their time as TamCast members. The organization has flourished in the hands of its seniors this past school year, helping more and more students peak interest in the organization. The seniors who led TamCast carved new beginnings for the organization, providing entertainment that enhanced the organization's creativity, inclusivity, and legacy.

As they finish their journey at FEU High School, the legacy they leave behind will remain embedded in the organization's culture. A part of them remains in the organization to honor and give gratitude for the things they have passed on.
