Epitome of Excellence: Biochemistry’s Suyo is the Batch Valedictorian for AY 2021-2022

With pride and glory, the Department of Biochemistry's Louie Rince C. Suyo received the Rector's Academic Award with the highest general weighted average in the University (Batch Valedictorian for AY 2021-2022) during the Student Awards 2022 last May 31 at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena.

Added to his merit were two other awards under the group category, namely St. Albertus Magnus Award and Benavides Outstanding Achievement Award (Faculty Level), which were also given in the said ceremony.

Suyo is a 23-year-old student from 4A-BC whose decision to embark on Biochemistry began when he was in Senior High School and noticed his good biology and chemistry marks. He initially thought that the program was just a combination of both; little did he know it was more complex than how it sounded. In his own words, he described, "it involves dealing with a myriad of metabolic pathways and reactions in living organisms."

He also had his fair share of setbacks along the journey. As a son, sibling, student-leader, scholar, and tutor to his nephews and nieces, he needed to play multiple roles simultaneously, which often felt overwhelming. However, he persisted, frequently reminding himself that "we are beings with finiteness; to get through it, we must take one step at a time and decide which to prioritize first."

Biochemistry may sometimes be too consuming of energy, time, and life–but it is worth the hardships. For Suyo, it can offer great opportunities in medicine, industry, research studies, agriculture, forensics, and other related fields. Hence, despite all odds, he was satisfied with his decision and grateful for the department.

His greatest source of inspiration in achieving his academic goals was himself, as he strives for self-improvement in all opportunities that come his way. He usually assesses the situation and sees where and how he could use his knowledge, skills, and experiences to help his family and community.

As he closes this chapter of his life, Suyo sends gratitude to the Faculty of Pharmacy for all the memories, opportunities, and guidance he has received during his stay. "I sincerely hope and pray that each member of this family will become successful and genuinely happy in their future endeavors," Suyo remarked.

Life in a university is no easy feat. It is more than the rollercoaster ride that most have thought of. But, from the story of Suyo, a glimpse of hope and inspiration can be drawn.

UST Biochem Students, Staff win Best Poster in BIOTA, AABE

UST Biochemistry students have successfully bagged the Best Poster Award in the Biodiversity and Conservation Category of the 56th Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines (BIOTA) National Convention and Scientific Sessions/28th Biennial Conference of the ASEAN Association of Biology Education (AABE) for their paper entitled “T’s for Fears: Anti-anxiety Activity of Philippine Tarantula” last April 28-30, 2022 via Zoom.

Among the Thomasian awardees who participated in the event are Rizelle Anne A. Calpo, Joshua Lawrence C. Bautista, Jaden G. Jaroolin, Elian Angelo M. Abellanosa, Anna Beatriz R. Mayor, Olga M. Nuñez, Darrel C. Acuña, Mula R. Santiago-Bautista, alongside their advisers Mr. Mark Kevin Devanadera, Asst. Prof. Myla Santiago-Bautista, PhD, Asst. Prof Gardee Peña, and Asst. Prof. Leonardo Guevarra.

The poster was about an isolated venom fraction obtained from the Philippine Orphnaecus tarantula species and was studied for its anxiolytic potential in zebrafish. It was then compared to Diazepam in dose-dependent neurobehavioral assays and glucose oxidase test.

“Spider venom has been an emerging topic in venom therapeutics. Thus, an isolated venom fraction from the Philippine Orphnaecus tarantula species and associating it with having the ability to produce anxiolytic activity is a great advancement to the field, as it may contain potential therapeutic application against neurotransmitter-related diseases such as pathological anxiety,” Calpo said when asked about their paper’s relevance.

Considering the experimentation, data gathering, data analysis and poster designing, Calpo mentioned that it took the group a month to prepare for the event.

Furthemore, distinguished academic staff Assoc. Prof. Maria Ruth B. Pineda-Cortel, Jose Angelo A. Bunag, Therriz P. Mamerto, and Miguel Francisco B. Abulencia also won best poster award in the Health and Wellness Category for their paper entitled, “Transcriptime Analysis reveal Distinct Potential Biomarkers for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus” in the said event.

The BIOTA is an annual national convention and scientific session. However, this year’s event was in partnership with the 28th Biennial Conference of the AABE.

“Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy. It is democracy.” – Walter Cronkite

The election period is the rise of massive information dissemination and almost an uncontrollable widening of the candidates’ sphere of influence. This puts pressure on the press to ensure the accuracy of the information received by the public and remain true to their duty as watchdogs who will safeguard the transparency of the entire election process. With this, journalists are faced with greater battles.

As the 2022 Philippine elections close, let us hear these campus journalists from UST Purple Gazette as they share their insights on the impacts of election on press freedom.

Medtech, Psych Seniors bag Championship and People's Choice Awards in PH Conference

The team of three UST Medical Technology and a Psychology student was hailed as the Grand Champion and won the People’s Choice Award in the Health Innovation Competition of the UP College of Medicine's 8th Philippine Conference on Community Health (PCCH): HAYAG - Singanen o Masa, last April 23.

“The Juans” comprised of fourth-year medtech students Jefson Romeo Felix, Kyla Maru Magcamit, Sofia Levy Destura, and Rommeleen Estolano from College of Science presented their project called “Project LYF” in hopes of addressing community concerns in Burgos, Surigao del Norte. They were the only undergraduate students out of the five groups who participated in the event.

Project LYF or Project Lokal Youth Force, as stated in the PCCH page, is an initiative which “aims to sustainably solve community health challenges by strengthening grassroots participation through capacity-building, people empowerment, and public-private partnerships and produce youth leaders and doers.” Under it are four sub-projects namely Lokal Youth Force Fellowship Program, Chikajuan Pangkalusugan, Tayo Para Sa Tao, and Townhall Talakayan.

When asked what inspired them to come up with Project LYF, Felix answered, “As we were given a case vignette of the situation in the Municipality of Burgos in Siargao, being one of the most affected places after the typhoon Odette last year, we really aimed for a project that does not only give a solution to the community’s problem, rather, a sustainable mechanism and opportunity for the community itself to be part of the solution, having youth efforts at the core of this initiative."

"Health promotion at the community level or in general will only be efficient, effective, and sustainable through public-private partnerships," he added.

The group is part of Juan Health PH, a youth-led community and public health centered digital publication, founded by Felix and Maria Rosario Isabel Seares who is also a medtech student in UST as their flagship project in ASEAN Youth Social Journalism (AYSJ) Contest 2021. Felix and Seares were also able to place first in the said contest.

Felix, Magcamit, and Destura are the former Editor-in-Chief, Health Science Editor, and Creatives Director of UST Purple Gazette, respectively.

The PCCH is an organization which focuses on the health status of the country and the current matters surrounding it. This year's conference is led by UPM Regionalization Students’ Organization, UP Medicine Student Council, ASMPH Student Council, ASMPH-SC Public Health Council, UP Medical Students for Social Responsibility, and ASMPH Class of 2025.

“Don’t leave the issue unheard. Do your part and educate the world about it. End rabies.” - Anonymous

Rabies is a viral zoonotic illness that can infect the central nervous system and cause "progressive and deadly inflammation of the brain and spinal cord," according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Rabies is both a treatable and preventable disease. Don't let it take your life because you are careless. Be alert and take precautions.

As we celebrate "Rabies Awareness Month," we must spread the word about the causes, key elements, emergency hotlines, and other information regarding rabies. Vaccinating your dogs can help save lives.

Wishing you a joyous, safe, and healthy Rabies Awareness Month!

To Create and Advocate: UST MTS launches a Poster Design Contest

With the aim to unleash the Faculty of Pharmacy (FoP) students’ creativity and spread awareness on national concerns, the UST Medical Technology Society (MTS) launched SILAKBO: The 2022 Poster Design Contest with the theme, “Good Governance” last March 14-18.

The poster-making contest, spearheaded by Beatriz Antonette F. Sibayan, Moira Bianca J. Paulino, Kyla Lois S. Jatulan, and Gavinwill Vicente S. Uy, was a sequel of the organization's previous art event titled, "MAGNUM OPUS: The 2020 Healthcare Edition Poster Design Contest,'' which revolved around the current healthcare system of the country. It was open to first to third-year students of the Department of Medical Technology.

Of all the entries submitted, three outstanding pieces which ingeniously portrayed the theme in strokes and colors, were selected for the final awards. Maria Leah Joyce Santos of 3FMT, with her piece, “Tresillo”, snagged the first place spot. Following her was Mikka Ysabelle Tan of 1DMT, who bagged the second place award with her piece, “Nagliliyab''. Finally, coming in at third place was Myles Crus of 2AMT, with her piece, “Saligan”. Apart from certificates, the awardees also received special prizes. The first placer received an MTS shirt while the second and third placers took home MTS pen capsules.

Flawed—that is how Santos came up with the whole concept of her piece, “Tresillo.” Looking at the general perspective of the Filipinos, she said, “I wondered if we, as Filipinos, even know the right kind of ‘good’ in the context of governance, or have we only known a deconstructed version of it; a more insidious take on the word ‘good’ used to cover up for whatever is lacking in how we’re governed.”

The first placer took inspiration from the controversial El Filibusterismo of the nationalist, Dr. Jose Rizal, and Leonardo Cruz’s exhibit of Noli Me Tangere wherein the subjects discuss issues of the country over a game of cards. It made her realize that even in these modern times, people with authority handle our country as though it were a game.

“I think that it’s about time that we start demanding good, and expecting good, and not accepting bare minimum and less than the bare minimum as good enough—and that was ultimately what I wanted to come across with the work,” she added.

Edward John C. Padilla, M.A., ED., L.P.T, a faculty member of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters, and Denielle Aria E. Littaua, the current officer-in-charge of the Finance and Designs Committee of the UST Organization of Medical Technology Interns (OMTI) were the judges of the competition.

It takes a good eye to comprehend meaning behind a truly magnificent work of art and the judges surely have it. "While looking at the works of the participants, I really wanted to see the theme clearly,'' Littaua said. She clarified that while many works were able to follow the theme well, she was looking for "works that could speak for themselves without the viewers needing to read their titles or descriptions."

The judge also stated that since the artists were given a good platform to showcase their abilities, their art should be able to effectively communicate their message to the public. In addition, she also looked for works that were visually appealing and made good use of their medium.

Aiming to channel the inner activist-artists in the FoP students, Sibayan aligned Silakbo’s theme to good governance, a highly relevant topic among the Filipinos today as the national elections come close. “A lot of voices need to be heard, and what better [way] to convey those emotions is through art–a powerful medium in spreading social awareness and a catalyst in making real-life changes,” she remarked.

Sibayan, along with Paulino, Jatulan, and Uy, carried out the poster-making competition with ease because of previous experiences and mastery in facilitating online events. Although faced with minor setbacks, they were still able to push through and make Silakbo a success.

The PharmaCup E-sport Tournament League of Legends was down to the finale with the Aerozyne Simps (AZS) against the Papichulos (PPC), as the Aerozyne Simps won the championship title with the score of 3-1 last March 17, broadcasted via Facebook Live on the PharmaCup Online 2022 page.

Team AZS composed of Isiah Bennet “Chae” Cabral (1D-PH), Yoshiki “Sprizzé” Daranciang (1B-PH), Ruel Vincent “Gannfyre” Asubar (4F-PH), Maria Christine Nicole “Aerozyne” Boo (4F-PH), and Wayne Gerald “Calm Monkey” Abordo (3E-PH).

The two teams started off the first game with a tournament draft, with the Aerozyne Simps, banning Rengar, Volibear, Veigar, Amumu, and Darius; and the Papichulos, banning Ahri, Fizz, Irelia, Orianna, and Hecarim.

In the beginning of the first game, the match immediately fired up as Aerozyne (Nami) of the Aerozyne Simps took first blood versus Batdoge (Karma) of the Papichulos.

The first game ended with team AZS winning against team PPC, with a team kill ratio of 21-11.

Chae from Aerozyne Simps was the most valuable player (MVP) with a score of 6 kills, 2 deaths, and 10 assists.

Moving on to the second game, team Papichulos easily secured the ocean drake as their first objective within the first six minutes of the game.

In the middle of the second game, the two teams struggled to break an even match as they scored a team kill ratio of 11-11.

The game soon ended with Maniacal Artist (Vel’koz) of team Papichulos as the MVP of the game with 8 kills, 10 assists, and no deaths. That gave the series a tally of 1-1.

In the fourth and final game of the series, the match started off with a clean double kill by Chae (Tristana) of the Aerozyne Simps.

Team AZS’s Calm Monkey (Hecarim) brings the heat in the mid-game as he frequently ganks the bot-lane against Eimj and BatDoge of the Papichulos, leaving a team kill ratio of 17-5. The Aerozyne Simps soon ended their last game with an easy victory against team Papichulos, with a final kill team ratio of 36-7, and a final standing of 3-1.

Chae of the Aerozyne Simps was hailed as the MVP once again, with a score of 13 kills, 2 deaths, and 12 assists.

The end of the fourth game concluded Team AZS as the champion of the League of Legends Division of the Pharmacup Online 2022.

Pharma freshies bag championship title of 2022 PharmaCup Valorant Finals

C10H15N (CHN), a team composed of first-year pharmacy students, bagged the “Pharmacup 2022: Valorant Finals" title after dominating Parabombay Sapphire (PBS) 3-0 in a best of five series last March 18, via Facebook Live.

The winning team, composed of Benito Noel “ft Cupcake” Rivera (1D-PH), Maurice “IsoBullzz” Munsayac (1B-PH), Erl “Cephius” Mariano (1F-PH), Nicholas Leo Alfonso “winter” Gonzales (1B-PH), Francis Gabriel “polaris” Licup (1B-PH), and Andrea “mahjinbuu” Perez (1B-PH), made a decisive win against PBS, scoring 13-6 on Icebox, 13-5 on Haven, and 17-15 on Ascent.

In the first game, Icebox, CHN’s ft Cupcake (Jett) shined in the pistol round as he dropped four kills, allowing an early purchase of a vandal for his team in the second round.

PBS struggled to defend against the overly aggressive CHN in the succeeding rounds, as CHN’s ft Cupcake (Jett) and winter (Viper) kept making early frags for the team. PBS managed to bounce back when they switched to the attacking side, with PBS’ koko (Chamber) and STIR FRY (Sova) clutching several rounds.

However, due to repetitive B site pushes by team PBS, CHN’s ft Cupcake (Jett) read the play and made a flank to the said bomb site, hitting four players in the back to seal the game 13-6.

A similar story was seen in the second game on the map, Ascent. PBS snatched the first round from CHN but team CHN responded and won 10 rounds in a row after.

PBS’ GKlele (KAY/O) and koko (Astra) tried to keep hopes alive for his team by dropping 20 and 12 kills respectively-the only two players on double digit kills for the team. It fell short against CHN whose members were all popping off, with four of them on double digit kills, ending the game in a dominating fashion 13-5.

The final game on Haven was a different story as PBS kept it close against CHN, refusing this time to go down in a blowout.

PBS V0hrgyyy (Brimstone) and Gklele (Jett) dominated CHN, combining for 37 kills to get a 10-4 round lead. CHN, however, did not back down and made a 6-0 run to equalize the game 10-10.

PBS reached match point first but CHN’s polaris (Sova) clutched the round to send the game into overtime, 12-12. CHN outclassed PBS after a series of overtime rounds and won the game 17-15, making them the champions of the 2022 PharmaCup Valorant tournament.

Out of 24 valorant teams in the PharmaCup tournament, CHN emerged victorious and also took home a prize money of ₱5040.

MillionDollarTeam edges Hazekam Gaming 3-2 in PharmaCup CODM Finals

The MillionDollarTeam (MDT) snatched the crown from Hazekam Gaming (HKG) after a stellar comeback game, scoring 3-2 in a best of five series to bag the championship title for the ‘Pharmacup 2022-Call of Duty Mobile Finals’ held last March 17 via Facebook Live.

MDT, composed of the players Rugen Bryce “Nuisänce” Ang (2E-PH), Tom Larsen “Morito4627” Mori (2D-PH), Henry Thomas “Shamiwhams” Limsui (2E-MT), John Paul “ThePokeNoob” Sabater (2A-PH), Bon Gabriel “GK步兄弟丨Buns” Nitafan (2D-PH), and Francesca Sophia “brentfaiyaz” Miranda (2D-PH), was down 0-2 but had outclassed HKG and won three consecutive game modes.

In the first game mode, hardpoint on the map 'Icebreaker,' MDT won 150-132. However, due to a rule violation by the team, HKG was given the match point.

Following the said game mode was Search and Destroy (SnD) on the map 'Hacienda.' The game was close as each team always manages to steal a round back as one team wins a round.

MDT's Nuisänce shined for his team with 18 kills, but it fell short against HKG's duo, dalawalarma and caripoku, who combined for 23 kills to seal the game 6-5 in favor of HKG.

In the Domination match held on 'Summit,' HKG's momentum from the previous win on the SnD match showed as they pummeled MDT in the first half 75-67.

However, this was short-lived as MDT stepped up in the second half. With excellent map control and good scorestreak usage, MDT 'triple capped' and contained team HKG to only 12 points in the second half, leading to a game win for MDT, 150-87.

MDT continued to dominate HKG in the next game mode, Hardpoint-Shoot house, as Nuisãnce and shamiwhams' CBR gun skill proved to be too much for HKG to handle as the duo combined for 54 kills, ending the game 150-49.

The deciding game for the series was Domination in the map 'Raid.' Both teams executed smart strategies such as coordinated pushes for the objective, flanks, and holding power positions. MDT proved to be the better team as they outclassed HKG and won 150-140, making them the champions of this year's PharmaCup CODm tourney.

"We had to step up our game. [Through] good communication and having fun, we played how we used to play, which resulted in a win," expressed Buns, one of the players of MDT.

The winning team also took home a prize money of ₱2100.

Berces particularly discussed the elements of news, lead writing, news story writing, headline writing, interview writing, and the style guide for news. Villanueva, on the other hand, talked about the structure of an editorial and editorial writing tips, especially during competitions, and he also gave sample works of editorial writing pieces at the end of his lecture.

Starting off the second day of the PHAhayagang Lila workshop, Magsino shed light on the "Whys and Hows" of feature writing.

During her talk, she began by describing feature writers through the quote, "Ang manunulat ng lathalain ang pinakamatalas na manunulat."

Delving deeper into the topic, Magsino discussed the definition of features and its objectives, as well as shared the simple formula and general tips one could use in writing a feature article.

Meanwhile, Magcamit taught participants the basics of health sciences writing. Among the topics she discussed was the definition of health sciences, its importance, traits of a health sciences writer, and shared the process, tips, and reminders in creating health sciences content.

By the end of her presentation, she reminded writers of an important point, which is to “only entertain facts.”

Each speaker left a writing prompt as they ended their presentations, which the attendees can write about and submit as part of the workshop.
