THE HUI: MĀORI ABUSE SURVIVORS CALL FOR NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBERANCE 🫶🏿

Māori survivors of abuse in state care are calling for a National Day of Remembrance - particularly for victims who died waiting for justice.

Speaking on current affairs programme The Hui, survivor advocate Eugene Ryder said a day of remembrance was “what accountability might look like”.

“A potential day of remembrance for all those who lost their lives, for all those that have been abused. And today there are people that can't talk, they can't speak, they can't hear, they can't see, that are in state care.”

His call was backed by fellow survivors Ihorangi Reweti-Peters and Paori Moyle. The trio were all deeply involved in the work of the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care which released its final 16-volume report last week.

Thousands of people who died in state care are estimated to be buried in unmarked graves adjacent to psychiatric institutions, hospitals, and other social welfare institutions.

The commission wants an independent advisory group to investigate the burials, some of which happened more than a century ago.

Ryder told The Hui host Julian Wilcox that the upcoming apology from Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on November 12 would mean little if it was not backed by action on the report’s 138 recommendations.

Reweti Peters also called for concrete measures rather than words.

“For me personally, an apology is not going to go far enough for the abuse that I have faced within the care of Oranga Tamariki. Actions, for me, are more important than an apology.”

The panellists were sceptical about the adequacy of the proposed $10,000 to recompense wider whanau members for living with the survivors’ trauma.

“The trauma that survivors suffered, the impact that it had on whanau is huge. It's way more than what $10,000 will cover,” said Ryder. Read more...

NGĀTI RAUKAWA DID NOT CEDE SOVEREIGNTY, TRIBUNAL TOLD ✊🏾 🖤 🤍 ❤️

Ngāti Raukawa had the final say in closing a four-year programme of Waitangi Tribunal hearings for the Manawatū ki Porirua Inquiry.

The last hearing for the inquiry finished at Raukawa Marae in Ōtaki on Friday.

The Ngāti Raukawa iwi confederation has been presenting its claims to the tribunal for four years.

The Covid-affected hearings started in March 2020 and were scheduled for a total of 12 weeks and then extended to 17.

The claims cover how hundreds of thousands of hectares of land between Kāpiti and Manawatū was taken from Māori by the Crown via pene raupatu, or confiscation by the pen.

The tribunal would next hear the Crown’s response to the evidence, to be followed by a presentation of the final technical reports and a summing-up of the inquiry.

Last week, Māori law and philosophy lecturer Ani Mikaere (Ngāti Raukawa) stated Ngāti Raukawa never ceded sovereignty to the Crown.

The tribunal met in Wellington, while witnesses gathered at Raukawa Marae and gave evidence online. Mikaere was the final speaker on behalf of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga.

he said Ngāti Raukawa chiefs signed te Tiriti o Waitangi and not the English language Treaty document, which reaffirmed their tino rangatiratanga (sovereignty) and agreed the Crown would be granted kāwanatanga (governorship).

However, Mikaere said that since May 1840, the Crown consistently failed to meet its commitments made to Ngāti Raukawa as outlined in Te Tiriti. Read more...

TE REO ADVOCATE LEADS MOVE TO RECLAIM WORLD HAKA RECORD ✊🏾 🖤 🤍 ❤️

When Hinewehi Mohi sang the New Zealand national anthem in te reo at the opening game of the 1999 Rugby World Cup, it was a turning point for the recognition of the Māori language.

Now 25 years later the singer, producer and te reo Māori advocate is bracing for another cultural moment: reclaiming the record for the world’s largest haka.

The existing record was set by France in 2014 with 4028 people taking part.

“When I first discovered that the French held the record for the largest haka, I kind of couldn’t believe it… how bizarre that was,” the 59-year-old said.

“This is where it’s from… it is very much a part of us, and undeniably ours.”

Mohi’s rendition of the national anthem in Twickenham Stadium, England was the first time it was sung in te reo Māori.

She received a backlash at the time, but said Aotearoa New Zealand has since come a long way towards accepting and celebrating Māori culture.

“It’s been an incredible resurgence and people all over the country are taking classes to learn the language,” Mohi said.

“No matter what their culture background or ethnicity or heritage is, they want to be able to be a part of the celebration of our cultural heritage through the language.”

Mohi said haka is a great way of accessing the language of te reo Māori.

“Even if we don’t fully understand it, we can learn about the stories told… and begin to get a better understanding of the language in that way,” she said.

“But also it helps us to be able to sing a long and be a part of the beauty of the language.”

The world record haka attempt will help raise funds for the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre.

Mohi was inspired to start the centre in 2004 by her daughter Hineraukatauri who has cerebral palsy.

“She can’t speak, she can’t walk, but she absolutely always responded and connected to music, and it just made her feel wonderful,” she said. Read more...

ACC NAMED AS FINALIST IN SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARDS FOR RONGOĀ MĀORI 🌿 🫶🏿

When ACC first began to offer rongoā Māori as a rehabilitation service four years ago, no one was sure how it was going to go.

“We've got a lot of people watching. We've got all of our tūpuna, our iwi, our hapū, our whānau,” Hazel Scandlyn, ACC principal adviser mātauranga Māori, said.

“It's a taonga for Māori so to be able to bring that into a Crown space was a little bit of a scary thought but, here we are today.”

ACC has been named as a finalist in Te Hāpai Hapori, the Spirit of Service Awards, for its work with the Rongoā Māori Service.

Rongoā Māori is the a traditional Māori healing system where ailments are treated in a holistic manner. It can include the use of plants, massage, and incantations or karakia passed down through many generations.

The awards, run by Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission, recognise public servants who go the extra mile, celebrating initiatives that deliver great outcomes.

In its summary of finalists, the commission said: “The Rongoā Māori Service exemplifies a commitment to protecting rongoā as a taonga and ensuring equitable access to services and experiences, leading to better health outcomes for Māori.”

Scandlyn said was challenging to think about te ao Māori coming into a Crown space.

“But as long as we wear our korowai and we move with tikanga and kawa, we'll be safe, our tūpuna will guide us.” Read more...

"Journeying" is a mural that pays tribute to the Māori history in Karori, capturing the essence of both its past and present. 🫶🏿

As you traverse the hills of Karori, you follow the paths of our ancestors, who traversed the Te Wharangi ridgeline, connecting the inner harbour with the coast, treasuring this land for its abundance of kai and rongoā.

The mural also highlights the significance of biodiversity and the symbiotic relationship between people and te taiao.

The theme of "Journeying" is artistically woven into the design, with tāwhirimātea (the wind) symbolizing movement, the Kākā representing flight and Papatūānuku embodying the flow of time. Mātakitaki mai💚🧡💙🤎

CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES TO LEGALLY PROTECT TINO RANGATIRATANGA FLAG ✊🏾 🖤 🤍 ❤️

“Tino needs tautoko!” is the rallying cry of a new crowdfunding campaign, launched to safeguard the legacy of the iconic Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

Te Tuhi Māreikura Charitable Trust, alongside the sole surviving designer of the flag, Linda Munn, announced the campaign on Monday afternoon to protect the Tino Rangatiratanga flag from “widespread misuse and misappropriation”.

The flag, designed by Munn, Hiraina Marsden and Jan Smith in 1989, is considered a powerful symbol of Māori identity and self-determination.

In a statement, a trust spokesperson said the campaign aimed to establish clear legal parameters for the flag’s use, ensuring its authenticity and protecting its integrity.

“It is concerning that the misuse and misappropriation of the flag is rife and Linda has had very little benefit or voice in these circumstances,” they said.

“This will benefit us all in knowing that when we fly the flag or support the production or wearing of this symbol, that we are actually supporting Māori-made local product that is community-driven (not China copies), artist-endorsed, quality product.

“The Tino Rangatiratanga flag is a potent and unique example of how artists' work is exploited in the commercial domain, where the artist lacks the resources to challenge the breaches of their intellectual property.” Read more...
