Prithvi Jayanti Day is celebrated in honor of the late King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal. The day was also formerly celebrated as National Reunification Day on 11 January (27 January) every year with much fanfare that has been questioned since the country was declared a republic after the collapse of the monarchy. The government of Nepal once declared a national holiday on Prithvi Jayanti. Many formal and informal programs have been organized by different organizations. But in recent years, PN Shah's birthday celebrations and National Unity Day have been removed from Nepal's calendar. There is great confusion among people about whether to celebrate this day or not. But those who believe in the occasion still celebrate the day outside the west gate of Singha Durbar by paying tribute to the late King Prithvi Narayan Shah with wreaths on his statue. The government headed by Girija Prasad Koirala has abolished the national holiday to celebrate the occasion.
