The International Composing Competition “2 Agosto” was born in 1994 by the willingness of the Associazione tra i familiari delle vittime della strage alla Stazione di Bologna del 2 Agosto 1980. Torquato Secci, the Chairman of the Associazione in those years, conceived the music as the more suitable instrument able to maintain alive both the victims’ memory of that infamous act, and the lesson that
we all should have learnt from that event. It was necessary to respond to that crime with an autonomous and creative action, that is why the composing competition was born, in order to change the target of the terrorist message, to transform its substance and to overreach the mere commemoration. From that time, in respecting the moral commitment we have assumed, the International Composing Competition “2 Agosto” - carried out under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic - has built its own artistic path, focusing on the elaboration of a more universal language, thanks to the weave of different music and musicality, under the sign of the creative innovation. The starting point was to grant to competitors either internationally recognized soloists (among them: Salvatore Accardo, Michael Brecker, Al di Meola, Stanislav Bunin, Michel Portal, Richard Galliano), or a high level orchestral team (the orchestra of the Fondazione Toscanini, and from 2007, together with the orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna), and talented orchestra leaders. The collaboration with the RAI, which broadcasts the final concert both by radio and TV. Another important partner is the Festival Internazionale Mozart a Rovereto, which has included a prize among ours and performs in its programmes the awarded pieces. From this year there will be the Orchestra Filarmonica di Torino as well, which has chosen to make room for the Competition’s winners within its programs. The International Composing Competition “2 Agosto” has been supported by some of the main international musicians. Among them, a special thanks to the Chairpersons of the Jury: Riccardo Muti, Ennio Morricone, Riccardo Chailly, Semyon Bychkov, Eliot Fisk, Federico Mondelci, Robert Beaser, Tania Leòn, Michel Portal, Jacob Ter Veldhuis, Jesus Villa-Rojo, Aurelio Samorì, Marco Tutino, Klaus Ager. Furthermore, we wish to tank all those artists who collaborated with us during these years, also in the name of the audience which, for many years, recognizes itself within the Competition during the night of
August 2nd when music is the main character and our message of peace, tolerance and solidarity heightens from Piazza Maggiore.

Concorso 2 Agosto is proud to announce the program of ### Edition that will take place in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna at 9:15 pm on August 2nd 2024.
The winning scores will be performed live in Bologna, the same night, during the commemorative events in memory of the victims of the slaughters.
The concert will be live broadcasted on RAI5 and RADIO3, and on-demand on RAI PLAY.

Virginia Guastella (1979) has been working professionally for twenty years. Born in Palermo, with academic studies (Diplomas in Piano, Composition, Master’s degree cm laude in Aesthetics of Music at University of Bologna, Accademia Chigiana), she works as composer, pianist, producer and conductor in different fields.

The 5th member of the board of jury of the ### Edition of the Concorso 2 Agosto is Marcello Panni.
Marcello Panni, born in Rome in 1940, is a celebrated Italian composer and conductor. He studied at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia and specialized with Goffredo Petrassi and Manuel Rosenthal. He debuted as a conductor in 1969 and has since had a prolific career in both composing and conducting.

She is a composer specializing in interdisciplinary creation. Highlights of her career include collaborations with The English National Ballet, the Royal Accademy of Arts and the Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

We are pleased to announce that the conductor of the 30th edition of the International Composing Competition “2 Agosto” will be Frédéric Chaslin.
Conductor, composer, pianist and author, Frédéric Chaslin was born in Paris and educated at the Paris Conservatoire and the Salzburg Mozarteum.

The maximum instrumentation allowed is the following: 2 flutes (2nd can be a piccolo), 2 oboes (2nd can be a cor anglais), 2 clarinets, 1 bass clarinet, 2 bassoons (2nd can be a contrabassoon), 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone, 1 tuba, 3 saxophones (2 altos and 1 tenor), 1 timpanist, 4 percussionists, and strings (12-10-8-6-4).
The ### Edition of the International Composing Competition “2 Agosto” is dedicated to scores for orchestra, without the addition of solo instruments.

Since the Competition was born, the beautiful city of Bologna has always been its background.
Like every year, on the evening of August 2, the end of the competition is celebrated with the significant final concert in the picturesque Piazza Maggiore.
The Competition is closely connected to the tragic events that took place on August 2 at Bologna Station.
Exactly 30 years ago, the Associazione tra i familiari delle vittime della strage alla Stazione di Bologna del 2 Agosto 1980 decided to organize an event to complement the official commemorations, involving young composers from all over the world, inviting them to use their creativity and the expressive power of music to honor the memory of the victims.
Over time, the Competition has become a fundamental part of Bologna's tradition, contributing significantly to Bologna's title of City of Music.
Many winners have had the chance to perform their compositions in Bologna's most famous square.

The Thirtieth Edition of the “2 Agosto” International Composing Competition is announced.
The ### Edition of the International Composing Competition “2 Agosto” is dedicated to scores for orchestra (maximum instrumentation allowed as per bullet point 6), without the addition of solo instruments.
The Competition will award the following three prizes:
First Prize: € 6,000; Second Prize: € 3,000; Third Prize: € 2,000.
The winning scores will be performed live in Bologna, Piazza Maggiore, on August 2nd, 2024, during the commemorative events in memory of the victims of the slaughters. The concert will be radio live broadcasted on RADIO3, and catch-up TV on RAI5.
The Competition is open to musicians of all nationalities, who were born after the 31st December 1989.
Deadline for the online applications: June 30, 2024, at midnight GMT.

He has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica of Milan starting from the 2022/23 season.
