Við erum í skýjunum! 🌫 Dunce hlaut tilnefningu til Grímunnar í vikunni sem Sproti ársins. ✨

"At the moment I am curious about the lifespan of a dancer, and have been for some time [...] I am currently processing the milestone of being over forty."
▫️Vala looks into ageing and the underlying prejudices entangled in theatre tradition, from the uniformity of the corps de ballet to the physical repertoire of dance companies today.▪️

"Every detail matters. It is not exactly about the architecture as such but what exists between the walls. When I move around the room, there is friction which sparks the work. The physicality is embedded in the negative space, the mould."
◽Conveying Physicality: Haraldur Jónsson on inspiration, moulds and the appeal of negative spaces ◽

Haraldur Jónsson is an artist who works simultaneously in various media. In his work he explores phenomena that arise in the lapses between bodily sensation, perception, emotion, and language. His performances take on different guises, inviting the audience to participate and thus gradually becoming an integral element in the work.

Dagrún Aðalsteinsdóttir (b. 1989 in Iceland) is an artist, writer, and independent curator based in Berlin and Reykjavík. Dagrún works in various media from performances, texts, and videos to collage drawings. Her work is an attempt to use personal or fictional scenarios and narratives to be in dialogue with how personal value versus collective value can overlap within the context of cultural production.

🔸 Absolute Ambiguity: Visual Artist Sigurður Atli Sigurðsson on the Co-op Print & Friends 🔹

"Print & Friends have always operated on a skewed business model, inventing new standards of value, other than those currently in place. At the National Gallery of Iceland we sold P&F branded cleaning products in the museum store, such as chloride, window cleaner and mouthwash. Each item had a different price tag, the window cleaner was about a hundred euros. The visitors could buy the cleaning products and exchange them for art works in the exhibition hall, which allowed us to bypass the ICOM code of ethics for museums." - in Dunce III.

Sigurður Atli Sigurðsson is an Icelandic visual artist who employs drawing, photography and language through the medium of printmaking and print media. His works deal with the transcription of social and behavioural systems and patterns to provide an angle for an alternative reading. The act of reading is ever-present in Sigurður’s work, which connects to his ongoing involvement with artist’s books and publishing.

"The Ritual of Repetition: Encountering Erna Ómarsdóttir’s Choreographic Practices" - DUNCE III. ⚡

“Earlier on, films inspired me, especially horror films. I was obsessed with them, having been traumatised from watching them too young—The first VHS movies, The Exorcist. All the kids in the neighbourhood would gather to watch these horror films together. I had nightmares which would make me afraid of the dark, but then, why is darkness scary? Why are we not scared of the light?” - choreographer and artistic director of the Iceland Dance Company interviewed by

Presenting Michikazu Matsune 💥

Michikazu Matsune is an artist who works in his signature style that incorporates documentarist and conceptualist methods. His works appear in various formats which range from stage-performances, interventions in public and private spaces, to text paintings. His personal approach, characterized both critical and playful at the same time, examines the tension around our cultural ascriptions and social identifications. "Between Fleeting Figures and Invisible Depths" by the choreographer Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir will appear in Dunce III 💫

🌫 "We come from water, not only in the sense that we start our lives in the water-filled womb of another person but also our fishy beginnings in evolutionary history. I think the memory of it is stored somewhere deep within our watery bodies and I am fascinated by the potential of these innate and forgotten memories as vehicles of awareness and embodied knowledge." 🌫 - Excerpt from the article by

Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir (b.1988) is a dancer, choreographer and performance maker living in Vienna. She graduated from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in 2014 with a major in choreography. Presenting the choreographer Mette Edvardsen - Dunce III

The work of Mette Edvardsen is situated within the performing arts field as a choreographer and performer. Although some of her works explore other media or other formats, such as video, books and writing, her interest is always in their relationship to the performing arts as a practice and a situation. She has worked as a dancer and performer since 1994 for a number of companies and projects, and has developed her own work since 2002. Her project Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine has been ongoing since 2010.

"In the Garden, history is processed, recycled (up-cycled), loved and hated.

In the Garden, archived history is inspiration and embodied history is treasure.

In the Garden, we´re interested in the cycling process of influences,

in the creativity that is triggered in the act of processing,

in the living repertoire

in the lasting influence of a moment witnessed"

Dunce Magazine is collaborating with the Iceland Dance Company this year. We present Saga Kjerúlf Sigurðardóttir, who writes about a work in making 🌾

Saga Kjerúlf Sigurðardóttir is a dancer and performance maker based in Reykjavík. Saga ́s choreographic practice is on one hand motivated by shared pleasure, wild expression and creative chaos of collective and multidisciplinary work, and on the other hand by the personal and psychophysical medium of the dreaming dancing body. Saga is member of performance collectives Marble Crowd, The PPBB and 16 Lovers, and is Associate Professor at IUA–Department of Performing Arts.

A sermon by Ventura Profana in Dunce III

"Ventura is a living work of art that navigates as a songwriter, singer, evangelist, writer, performer, and visual artist, in constant dialogue with gender and class issues—mainly confronting and expanding the idea of ourselves as a battlefield between the sacred and profane, pure and impure, pleasure and sin." - From the introduction by Rita Davis.
