A filigree of shadows through metal screens, a kitchen counter awash with early morning light, or the play of refracted patterns over an indoor waterbody. These are scenes from Adhwa Architectsโ€™ newly designed residence, located in the residential area of South Bopal, Ahmedabad.

Set on a plot of 4000 sq. ft on an east-west axis, the multi-level family home encompasses quiet luxury and a modern Indian lifestyle. The architects have achieved a spacious home, with interesting intersections of large volumes and generous outdoor connections, the experiences of which await one upon entrance. From the adjoining lane, the exteriors do not disclose expansive volumes within the three-storeyed home - but a fleeting glimpse of the open living areas reveals light-filled life.

The Kenz House, designed for a family of four, is built on a 40 cents land set beside the National Highway 66. The owner, a doctor by profession, came to us with a simple yet demanding brief - โ€œhe wanted something special, something new !โ€ The siteโ€™s close proximity to the highway, and the familyโ€™s requirement for a peaceful nature-filled abode formed the primary framework for the architecture and interior planning. Accordingly, The Kenzโ€™s plan addresses the requirements for privacy and the need for open free-flowing interiors entwined with nature.

The house is linear that runs along the east-west axis with the entrance being at the center that parts the public and private spaces in two halves. A Masjid, usually a quintessential Islamic building, is a โ€œplace of prostrationโ€, which means โ€˜kneelingโ€™. Islamic architecture is not regional. Over the years, most of the pre-Islamic vernacular forms and characteristics have gradually become an eclectic mix of the elements and characteristics of areas where Islam had spread.

Unlike historical monumental mosques, contemporary mosques are designed to exhibit these transformed forms establishing a unique identity of their own; โ€˜Masjid-e-Zubaidaโ€™ being one such example.

This is a unique project that realizes itself as a negotiation between outward views and introverted planning. Located within a gated compound, the project houses a multigenerational family and staff. The test was to have each living, sleeping and entertainment space open to the outdoors without privacy loss. The concept was of a warm neighborhood cafรฉ, reminiscent of the clientโ€™s grandfatherโ€™s home. Drawing inspiration from a traditional Tamil house, Bungalow Medu ingeniously reinterprets these elements in a contemporary context. As one enters from the road through a passageway, they are greeted by a โ€˜thinnaiโ€™ - a raised built in platform with polished grey cement oxide. Adjacent to it, the main entrance maintains a clear axis leading to the backyard cafรฉ.

This formed the basis for the structureโ€™s elevation and facade. Further, we decided to use this approach, the most compelling reason being, to maintain the connection of the inside with the outside. Therefore, major part of the exterior skin of the building was comprised of 4mm M.S sheet, CNC cut with a uniform repetitive pattern to wrap the building from the front and gave it a rose gold finish to make it appear as grand as one would feel whilst walking past one of the Indo-Islamic monuments. Unbeknownst to us, this rose gold โ€˜jaaliโ€™ on the exterior produced subtle hues of copper on the inside due to the sunlight that caressed its surface, transforming the space into an ethereal experience with alternating warm brown hues that is witnessed at different times of the day from dawn to dusk.
