The Code of Kalisz guaranteed Jews in Poland a wide range of rights and privileges, unique in medieval Europe, where Jews were often persecuted. The Statute of Kalisz provided, among other things, protection from physical violence, the right to internal self-government, the right to judge Jewish cases in their courts, the right to trade, and protection from false accusations, including ritual murder.

The Code of Kalisz, also known as the Statute of Kalisz, is a document issued on August 16, 1264, by Bolesław the Pious, Duke of Greater Poland, confirmed by Casimir III the Great in 1334 and extended to the entire Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. Subsequent Polish rulers repeatedly confirmed and expanded the privileges contained in the Code of Kalisz throughout its whole statehood period, which contributed to the development of the Jewish community in Poland and made the country an important center of Jewish life in Europe.

Thanks to these privileges, Poland became a refuge for Jews from other countries where they were persecuted. Jewish expulsions have occurred many times in European history, mainly due to religious intolerance, anti-Semitism, and political conflicts. Here are some key examples of Jewish expulsions from various countries: ​England (1290), France (1306 and 1394), Spain (1492), Portugal (1496), and the German Reich (15th and 16th century).

These expulsions had tragic consequences for Jewish communities, forcing them to live in constant uncertainty and search for new places to settle. As a result of these events, the Kingdom of Poland and the Ottoman Empire became some of the main refuges for Jews, offering them relatively more tolerance at the time.

A brief overview of Tisha B’Av as Jews remember the destruction of the first two temples

▫️Monday evening marks the beginning of the observance of Tisha B’Av, or, the Ninth of Av. Tisha B’Av is recognized as one of the saddest days on the Hebrew calendar, as it commemorates the destruction of the first two temples in Jewish history, not to mention several other tragic events.

▫️As Jews observe this day of mourning, they will traditionally fast (water and food), emphasize the use of certain ointments, and mourn in various ways. They will also refrain from any marital, physical intimacy, routine hobbies, and bathing, among other things.

▫️Also commemorated on this date is the Bar Kochba Revolt in 133 A.D., when the Jews fell to the Romans, followed by the plowing of the Temple Mount exactly one year later. Additionally, the expulsion of England’s Jews in 1290 and the banishment of all Jews from Spain in 1492 fell on this very day in history. Interestingly enough, the temples were both destroyed on the same calendar date in history, the ninth of Av, 657 years apart. Coincidence? Not likely.

▫️The first temple, the Solomonic temple (built by King Solomon, David’s son), was destroyed by the Babylonians in 587 B.C. after the Jews had been exiled to Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar II. The second temple, the Herodian temple, was destroyed in 70 A.D. at the hands of the Romans when they sieged Jerusalem – an event that Jesus Himself foretold (Matthew 24:1-2). The reasoning for the destruction of the first temple, sadly, was due to the nation’s sin, which resulted in exile from the land for 70 years (Jeremiah 29:10, Daniel 9:2). As previously mentioned, the second temple was destroyed when the Romans sieged Jerusalem, ultimately leading to the diaspora of the Jewish people which was foretold by the prophets.

▫️While the past temples are of great significance both biblically and historically, the series of temples has not run its course. If you ever go on a trip to Israel, and more specifically, the Old City, you can find your way to the Temple Institute. Within this institute, it will become abundantly clear that the Jewish people are beyond ready to construct their third temple. They have the blueprints, priestly garments, temple utensils (with the exception of the original Ark of the Covenant), etc. So, what’s preventing them? The Temple Mount is one of the most religiously controversial places on the face of the earth, currently manned by Islam’s Dome of the Rock & Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site of Islam.

▫️However, a time is coming when a man who the Bible refers to as the man of sin, the man of lawlessness, is going to likely provide the means for Israel to construct its third temple, despite the pressure from Islam. That being said, tragically, according to Daniel, Jesus, and Paul, this temple, the third temple, also faces a rough future (Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:15, 2 Thessalonians 2:4). This temple will be desecrated by the most wicked man to ever live, the Antichrist, and will lead to the worst persecution the Jewish people have ever experienced.

▫️Thankfully, despite the tragedies surrounding the third temple, this isn’t where the series ends. There will be a fourth temple, and our Messiah, Jesus, will reign from it Himself (Ezekiel 43:1-7), bringing to the world something it has never experienced but God has always intended – perfect peace, perfect justice, perfect righteousness; a perfect King.

Sitka - a dog in the Oketz, IDF’s independent canine special unit, that was seriously injured about 5 months ago as a result of a bomb explosion in the southern Gaza Strip, died this week from his wounds.

Sitka was the dog of the late Sgt. David Sasson, who was killed in the same incident that happened on March 6th in the "Hamad" neighborhood in the west of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
