Even with the best time management techniques, roadblocks happen. Distractions, unexpected tasks, or simply feeling unmotivated can throw your schedule off. So what can you do?
These are the 3 tools I use more than anything:
1. Minimise Distractions:
We all have those little things that break our focus - maybe it’s the messy desk, with post-it notes everywhere? Try tackling that clutter before getting into work modes, or setting specific times to check emails. For me, it's the ping of notifications or that irresistible urge to check social media, so I make sure my phone has “Do Not Disturb” or Work Focus turned on.
2. Time Audits:
It’s easy to think you’re working efficiently, but those small detours can really add up. I like to track my time for a few days, noting down exactly what I’m doing in half-hour blocks. This helps me spot where I’m losing time, such as spending too long on admin or getting lost in research rabbit holes. From there, I can tweak my schedule or cut out the fluff. Give it a go - you might be surprised where the time really goes!
3. Flexibility:
Life has a habit of throwing curveballs, and sometimes sticking to a strict schedule can add unnecessary stress. I’ve learned to build in a bit of wiggle room during my day, whether that’s allowing extra time for projects that might run over or just having a few unscheduled slots to catch up or handle last-minute tasks. For me, it’s often about balancing client work with my own projects, and that bit of flexibility means I can switch gears without feeling like I’m falling behind.
At the risk of sounding like AI, I'd love to know if you have any tips to manage your time!
