We’re a nation obsessed with coffee, as it turns out, with 81% of Brits visiting a cafe regularly. But this £10.1 billion business sector. But it's fair to say that nearly half of this extraordinarily buoyant sector is dominated by the big boys, the branded coffee chains.

Many independent coffee shop owners are still feeling the pinch following recent lockdowns. So let’s consider some of the reasons customers should spend their hard earned money in local, independent coffee houses instead...

Branded venues are expensive;
Their decor is the same, no matter which store you visit;
The end product, the coffee, actually, isn’t that great;
The queues are long and noisy;
The locations are commercially driven within shopping centres, airport lounges or branded faceless high streets;

Put it all like this, an independent coffee wins hands down, doesn’t it?

Social media refers to interactions between people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. This seems pretty straightforward. Right?

Social media is about conversations, community, connecting with the audience and building relationships. It's not just a broadcast channel or a sales and marketing tool.
It must be authentic, honesty and with an open dialogue. Social media is not a one way communication tool. It enables you to respond. Listen first, speak later. Be compelling, useful, relevant and engaging. Offer value. Don't create noise in what is already an extremely noisy environment.

During my restaurant days the 14th of February was always viewed as hugely frustrating from a business point of view. Tables for couples everywhere, taking up much needed dining space even on the largest of tables. Not exactly the most effective way to maximise covers in a restaurant. The gentleman feeling obliged to do the right thing. To participate in this annual gastronomic tradition. With the only thought racing through his mind. The unwelcome bill. How romantic.

The commercialisation of this day applies to so many aspects of our lives. Look at me and this post for instance. Underneath its glossy exterior is a search for more Instagram followers, increased engagement and ultimately a positive impact on my bottom line.

But today has made me think about love beyond couples buying roses, chocolates and shiny sparkly things. My two daughters Isabelle and Kitty this very morning received cards in the post from their daddy. My mother-in-law over these past few weeks has been shown boundless love by her family and friends following the death of her husband. The daily love I give to my partner as she greaves for the loss of her daddy. And the love I send to all the refugees and displaced people globally (please go to this website - they do the most incredible thing). https://choose.love/

So. To quote Love Actually. "Let's Get The Sh*t Kicked Out Of Us By Love!".

Hi, friends! To those who are new to my feed, welcome!

If you’ve been following me here for a while, I’m sure there’s a ton about my life you already know, but I like to take some time every now and again to (re)introduce myself. This time, I’m going to share 3 things that hardly anyone knows (yes, I still have a few secrets!):

1. I used to be a Sommelier (I have a Diploma in Wines & Spirits I'll have you know 😊)

2. One of my favourite pastimes is skiing. If I didn't live in Cornwall. I would be up high in a ski lodge somewhere. Still enjoying a pasty though!

3. I was recently diagnosed with Bipolar Type II. Mental health is a huge topic right now I know. And I will discuss my trials and tribulations with you all very soon. But I'm in good company with Stephen Fry and Carrie Fisher to keep me sane.

That’s right, sometimes the best way to stay fresh is by unplugging! I’m taking my own advice by exploring the beautiful Bodmin Moor this weekend. Lots of dog walks up to the Cheesewring Quarry. Taking in the fresh air and amazing landscapes of the wild side of Cornwall. I really hope it doesn't pour down!

Not all job titles are the same - here's what makes me different.

Empathy. To know exactly what the food, drink or hospitality business owner is facing in these uncertain times. To talk the talk with chefs, managers, chef patrons, sommeliers, owners and managing directors. To fully understand the highs and lows, the pitfalls and the perils. Not everyone has been immersed so deep and with such responsibility at such an early point in their career as myself. I even recall crawling around on all fours on a certain pool table some forty years ago in my grandparent's family pub. I was destined for hospitality it seems.

Fast forward to 2020. The landscape for has changed forever. Its unrecognisable. The demands on the business owner have never been greater. It's not about pulling the perfect pint any more or keeping a well stocked cellar. The digital landscape in which we exist demands that progressive owners need to be equally savvy with their digital business strategy. That's where I come in.

So we are back to an opening date for all UK hospitality businesses that can comply with the new measures from Monday 4th July - "at the earliest".

Alfresco drinking suggestions were mooted for two weeks time but this move now seems unlikely according to pub industry sources. There will be a lot of stale beer that needs to be offloaded alongside fresh beer that needs to be brewed no doubt.

Recruiting hospitality teams again, putting new measures and protocols in place will all take time. The 4th of July might even be put back if a secondary infection spike looms on the horizon.

How much time do you think most pubs, restaurants and bars across the country need to be ready for customers? And do you think the two-metre rule should still be in force?
