Advocate is the University of Nottingham School of Law's magazine, produced by students for students. We regularly publish articles on our online magazine and print a magazine once per semester. All students, law or otherwise, are welcome to write articles for us. Advocate is a diverse magazine which centres upon law and the

legal profession, but includes articles on politics, international relations and much more. We have four excellent associates who are in charge of each of our four sections: Legal Affairs, International Affairs, Domestic Affairs, and University Life and Careers. We provide support for people interested in writing, even if they are not sure what topic to write about, and are a very welcoming society. If you have an interest in writing and getting published, this is the society for you. We also host some fun socials for the committee and contributors to get together. We are constantly accepting article submissions via our email address from any interested students. An upper word limit of 1000 words is advised. If you are interested in writing for Advocate and have any questions about an article you wish to write, or you would like to get involved in the committee, please feel free to email us, or contact us on Facebook. Writing for Advocate gives you the chance to see your name and work in print, gets you involved in a new society and looks great on your CV. We look forward to hearing from you soon! Contact us:

Our Winter Edition “Visions of Hope,” is finally out on our website. This edition summarises the optimistic views of a post-pandemic future embraced by our writers. We would like to thank our Writers, the Editorial, and Design team for an amazing job. A job that’s a testament, of the important role advocate can continue to play in the University. We also send a special thank you to our readers, for the patience as we were unable to publish the edition at the planned moment, due to unforeseen circumstances.

Hopefully, y’all enjoy the read! ~ Link in bio

REMINDER: Applications to join our editorial team close tomorrow! This is a great chance to have a real impact on the content of Advocate Magazine and get some journalistic experience for your CV. See details for applying below:

Applications to join our Editorial Team for 2021-2022 are now open!

The editorial team is a crucial part of Advocate Magazine – they’re the ones who help our writers develop great articles, curate the magazine and sometimes contribute to our print and online magazines themselves. It’s a rewarding opportunity and great to add to your CV.

Here’s a note from our current Head Content Editor, Jasmine Shergill, on the work of our editors this year:
“In light of the unprecedented circumstances this year, the editorial process moved solely online. We introduced a very successful virtual journalism programme, where editors were able to work closely to support and guide their writers through the editorial process. This was a very rewarding experience for the editorial team, and the programme produced some of the best articles Advocate has ever received, showcased in our Winter Edition 2021. Joining our editorial team therefore, promises to be just as worthwhile, whether it continues online, or if we are able to return to in person events.”

The following roles are being recruited:
* - Head Content Editor – a role that involves overseeing our print editions as a whole and co-ordinating the other editors. Involved in editing and selecting articles for publication both online and in our Winter and Summer Editions. Responsible for the Journalism Programme.
* - Deputy Head Content Editor – assists the Head Content Editor in their responsibilities.
* - Domestic Affairs Editor(s) – responsible for editing articles whose topics fall within the scope of Domestic Affairs
* - International Affairs Editor(s) – responsible for editing articles whose topics fall within the scope of International Affairs
* - Legal Affairs Editor(s) – responsible for editing articles whose topics fall within the scope of Legal Affairs
* - Online Editor(s) – responsible for editing articles for our online magazine
* - Head Design Editor – responsible for designing the format and style of our Winter and Summer Edition, including the cover and the pages inside, and designs the final magazine.
* - Deputy Head Design Editor – assists the Head Design Editor in their role and sources artwork to accompany the articles.
We are looking to recruit more than one editor in most roles to ensure that the workload assigned to each editor is manageable.

For the first stage of the application process for the editorial roles, please send 250 words to [email protected] on why you would be suitable for the role by midnight on the 16th of April. If applying for a design role, please also send a sample of your design work.

If successful at this stage, you will proceed to the second stage, where you will be asked to complete an editorial task and answer a few more questions.

Please let us know if you have any questions, and good luck to those applying!

We're excited to announce that our Winter Edition, "Brave New World", is out now on our website! It's been a long time coming and a lot of hard work has gone into making it. We'd like to thank our journalists, our editors and the design team for their amazing work on this issue as we explore the dynamic landscape of today's world, from COVID-19 and anti-racism to suretyship and the modern woman. This edition also marked our own brave steps into our new format, as the first magazine to be produced via our Journalism Programme, and it's a proud accomplishment for Advocate Magazine.

Read it now on our website - see the link in our bio.

Today is University Mental Health Day 2021. University can be a challenging experience in the best of times, so amidst the coronavirus pandemic, it's more important than ever to get talking about student mental health and encourage each other to look after it. This week, the University is running a range of events to mark it - see https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/currentstudents/healthyu/events.aspx for more info.

Everyone's mental wellbeing fluctuates, so it's important to be aware of some of the signs that it's starting to drop. The signs vary from person to person, but they can include:
- Withdrawing/not feeling like socialising in the way that you normally would
- Distancing yourself from friends, family and housemates
- Your performance in academic/extra-curricular activities isn’t where it normally is
- Your appetite has changed noticeably in either direction
- Sleep disruption – sleeping more/less than usual, or you’re having difficulty staying asleep
- Finding it difficult to look after your personal appearance

There are small, everyday changes that you can implement to help look after your wellbeing, including getting into a good sleep routine, making time for exercise and things you enjoy, and catching up with the people that matter to you. Remember, self-care IS productive, so you should never feel guilty for taking a break from your work to look after yourself.

It's also important to remember that you should never be ashamed to ask for help - reaching out is one of the bravest things you can do when you're struggling. If your mental health is starting to impact your life, there are several places you can go at uni and elsewhere.

This Thursday (25th February) at 6pm GMT, Notts Scholars at Risk are hosting a round-table discussion on the case of Indian scholar and human rights activist, Professor GN Saibaba. He has been wrongly imprisoned since March 2017, to the grave violation of his human rights and academic freedom.
