Master Detective October 2023

Description
This issue we reach part 6 of Matthew Spicer’s ground-breaking Whitechapel Murders casebook, with perhaps the most shocking case so far. The brutal evisceration of Catherine Eddowes would have been horrifying enough on its own, but the fact that it was the second attack in one night by the man soon to be known as Jack the Ripper made it seem far, far worse.

We’ve two modern serial killer sagas for you this month too. From the USA comes the lengthy killing history of Joel Rifkin, who to this day remains a suspect in numerous unsolved murders. Then there’s the equally ghastly tale of Donato Bilancia, thought to be Italy’s most prolific serial killer.

And that’s just the tip of this issue’s iceberg-sized helping of must-read crime stories, all of them true…

Highlights this issue include:

* The Stepmother From Hell
* European Crime Report: “Murder On The Hamburg Express,” “Nurse ‘Talked Boyfriend Into Killing,’” “S*x-Worker, Bound And Beaten, Found Dead In Locked Room”
* Scotland’s Classic Cases: Sympathy For A Wife-Killer
* “He Was Just A Nerdy Guy”
* The Whitechapel Murders: Two Women Butchered In One Night
* Eighteen Victims For The Terminator
* MD Forum: Evil Couple Killed Auntie Ivy For Her Money
* International Casebook Of Women Executed For Their Crimes: Why Louisa Was Tried Four Times For Murder
* Kimberly – The “Insatiable Black Widow”

Murder Most Foul 129

Hearing life-changing news about an illness or disease can sometimes bring out the very best in people. How many of us have been truly humbled by the courage and stoicism shown by terminally ill cancer sufferers, for example? Michael Lupo, though, was cut from a different cloth. When in the 1980s he was diagnosed with AIDS, his world fell apart. Lupo had enjoyed a hedonistic lifestyle and was well known in London’s gay community and society circles. Now he chose to exact revenge on the gay community. See this issue’s “Four Victims For ‘The Wolfman’ Of London” for the full story.

“Why Kill And Dismember Elizabeth?” in this issue takes us back to 1940s Los Angeles and the haunting and still-unsolved Black Dahlia murder mystery. All the signs were that Hollywood wannabe Elizabeth Short had been tortured before being savagely slashed and mutilated. Who was the frenzied killer who had taken her life so brutally? And what on earth was the motive?

Finally, don’t miss the case of cold-blooded killer Stephen Morin, one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives. Read “I Helped A Mass Killer Build His Torture Chamber” for the full story.

Highlights this issue include:

* Heidnik: Terror In His Pit Of Death
* Disgusting Crimes Of Grace’s Callous Killer
* Four Victims For “The Wolfman” Of LondonDescription

True Detective September 2023
Description
Sixty years ago, on August 8th, 1963, the largest-ever robbery committed in Britain happened. It quickly became known as the Great Train Robbery – and the names of many of the culprits were subsequently written into the nation’s criminal folklore. Bruce Reynolds, Ronnie Biggs, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson: just some of the 15 masked men who attacked the Glasgow to London Royal Mail train. In the space of some 20 minutes, the gang stole 119 mailbags and escaped with a haul of more than £2.5 million – the equivalent of £45 million in today’s money. It was, therefore, a sensational heist, one which dominated the front pages of the national newspapers as investigators went on the hunt for the guilty men. And even after most of them were captured, the story was far from over….Marking the anniversary of the crime, we present “Crimes That Made The Headlines Extra – The True Story Of The Great Train Robbery”.

Ahead of that comes a disturbing tale of murder from New Zealand, involving a Colombian victim and a culprit who was a former prisoner. As in so many of today’s criminal investigations, technology played its part in nailing the suspect. See “Fear Thy Neighbour” for the full story.

Finally, don’t miss the story of how a robbery at a Dublin candle factory led to a significant moment in Ireland’s legal history. Read “First Ex*****on In The New Irish State” for the full story.

Highlights this issue include:

* Fear Thy Neighbour
* Crimes That Made The Headlines: Horror Of The Hanging Model
* Hanged In Australia: South Australian Killer Released To Kill Again
* Death In The Line Of Duty: Part 9
* Crimes That Made The Headlines – Extra: The True Story Of The Great Train Robbery

What Kind Of Father Could Do This?
Armenian-born Aramazd Andressian was lying semi-conscious 30ft from his petrol-soaked BMW when LAPD officers found him in South Pasadena…

After the trip to Disneyland on April 15th, 2017, Andressian said, he drove to the lake and smothered his five-year-old son Piqui on the back seat of the BMW with a sweatshirt he’d left in the car. Piqui was asleep when his father rammed the shirt over his face.

Andressian thought he was dead, then the little boy twitched and vomited and “I had to kill him again.”

He said he sat in his car overnight with his Piqui’s co**se for around eight hours. After Andressian’s confession – two months later – the boy’s skeletal remains were found, roughly covered by brushwood in undergrowth, 50ft from a car park at Lake Cachuma.

He had changed his son’s body into his pyjamas and propped him against a tree...

“If Anyone Deserves The Death Penalty, It’s Him”
When a man walked into a police station in North Carolina and said there was a body in his home, the truth was more horrifying and shocking than anyone could have imagined…

According to the autopsy report from the medical examiner, 15-year-old Zaria Burgess died as the result of a sharp force injury to her neck. She had multiple bruises all over her body after she’d been tortured and s*xually assaulted multiple times.

The killer had r**ed her, stabbed her in several places on her body and slit her throat so deeply it had completely severed the carotid artery.

And the pattern of bruises, as well as the way some were clearly fresher than others, showed that she’d been tortured for almost a full day.

Yet the most shocking fact of all came from the DNA taken from the semen found in her body after the s*xual assaults.

It matched her own. So the only person who could have treated her in such a horrifyingly inhumane manner was Joshua Burgess.

Her own father…Her own father…

DNA evidence is today a key factor in solving many if not most murder cases. But for most of the 20th century, murder case detectives could only dream of such technology. See this issue for a fascinating, double-length special report on how brilliant forensic detection methods helped solve some of the classic British murder cases back in the day.

Murder Most Foul No. 124

Teenagers Pauline Parker, 16, and Juliet Hulme, 15, meant the world to each other – but their close friendship, in which they engaged in s*xual experiments, was a worry to both sets of parents. The girls, from Christchurch, New Zealand, immersed themselves in literature, dreamed of becoming authors and began to consider themselves above the law. They indulged in shoplifting and wondered whether prostitution or blackmail was the route to financial reward. Pauline’s mother wanted to split them up – so she had to die. Read “Let’s Moider Mother” for the full story.

School baseball coach Russ Stager was worried. He feared that his wife Barbara was out to kill him. In fact, so suspicious was he that he recorded a tape voicing those concerns. Days later, the 40-year-old dad from North Carolina was dead – mortally wounded when he was “accidentally” shot by his wife while in bed. Russ’s recording didn’t come to light till a year after his death. But when it did, investigators were very keen to speak to Barbara. Don’t miss “Did Barbara Murder One Husband…Or Two?”

Finally, don’t miss a curious case from Leytonstone, east London. Wife-killer Charles Frembd was guilty. But should his age and frailty have saved him? Find out in “An Old Man On The Gallows”.
