Dear Patricia Marie,
My 30 year old daughter has been happily married for 10 years now, while my
25 year old son is still drifting from one relationship to another. He introduces
his girlfriends to us as the love of his life, and a few months later, it’s all over.
My husband and I have enjoyed wedded bliss for over 35 years. It is extremely
upsetting that while one of our children seems to have followed our example,
the other has not. I am becoming increasingly concerned by my son’s erratic
behaviour.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK 👨‍🍳 Raspberry Brownies

There’s an art to making the perfect gooey but crunchy brownie. The gooeyness is all about timing, so using a thermometer takes the guesswork out of getting it right. The key to the crunchy top is whisking the eggs until they are foaming and hold air bubbles and, even more importantly, using the freshest eggs you can find. These brownies also work well using gluten-free flour.

The recipe is from the new book, The Art of Afternoon Tea: Tradition, Etiquette and Delectable Recipes for Teatime Treats will be published on 25 June by price £11.95

📚 BOOK OF THE MONTH 📚

C.S. LEWIS’S OXFORD by Simon Horobin by Bodleian Library Publishing

Although Clive Staples Lewis rarely left Oxford as an adult, his stories are loved all over the world. Who, as a child, did not thrill to the land of Narnia behind the wardrobe? These simple tales have been translated into 47 languages and sold over 100 million copies. His Oxford home, The Kilns, where all the Narnia books were written, has long been a popular place of pilgrimage for enthusiasts.
Narnia may seem fantastical, but the stories are inspired by real-life locations and buildings all over Oxford. This book takes us on a magical mystery tour of the city that so captivated Lewis from the moment he arrived from his native Belfast. A tweedy, childless bachelor, whose one marriage lasted only four years, Lewis was also a medieval and Renaissance scholar, an influential writer on Christianity and an enthusiastic club man and drinker, famed for his friendship with another Oxford fantasy writer, J.R.R. Tolkien.
Together, they studied Old Norse and Old Icelandic literature, using their imaginations to transform these ancient myths into the wondrous sagas that we enjoy today. They also tried their hand at science fiction, and Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938, became an instant and lasting classic.
Drawing on previously unpublished diaries, letters, poems and tutorial reports, Simon Horobin – himself an Oxford don – shows us just how intimately Lewis and the city of dreaming spires were intertwined, and how this rather retiring and unassuming academic became a global superstar. We are also given fresh insights into Lewis’s multi-faceted genius, his somewhat problematic personality, his enthusiastic conversion to Christianity and the lasting grief he suffered from the early death of his American wife.
This book is an absolute must for all Lewis – and Oxford – devotees says Liz Hodgkinson
